When Aunt saw me, she smiled and asked, "Xiao Qi, where are your grandparents?"
I replied, "They went to the market to see a doctor."
Aunt asked, "Who is sick?"
I answered, "Grandma is sick. She said she would be back in the afternoon."
Aunt muttered to herself, "Then it should be nothing serious."
She brought her luggage into the house. In our east room, we were keeping four lambs, and there was an unpleasant smell in the air.
Aunt's boyfriend, Wang Liang, entered the house and immediately changed his expression. Covering his nose, he ran out to the yard and said unhappily, "You keep sheep in your house? It stinks!"
Aunt chuckled awkwardly and said, "Xiao Liang, don't be upset. I didn't know there were sheep in the east room. Let me take you to the west room."
She then asked me, "Is the west room clean?"
I replied, "Yes, it's clean."
Aunt led Wang Liang to the west room and moved her luggage there as well.
After a while in the west room, Wang Liang came out holding a few candies and waved at me. I ran over to him, and he placed the candies in my hand while smiling and asking, "What illness does your grandma have? Why isn't she back yet?"
I said, "Grandma has a stomachache."
As soon as I finished speaking, Aunt came out of the storage room with a plate of sheep's head meat.
She handed the plate to Wang Liang and said, "There's nothing ready to eat at home except this plate of sheep's head meat. Just have a bite for now. When my mom comes back, she'll cook for you."
Wang Liang glanced at the sheep's head meat; it glistened with grease. I couldn't help but swallow hard, wanting to devour it, but Aunt didn't let me eat. Wang Liang held the plate in one hand and stuffed pieces of sheep's head meat into his mouth with the other.
He ate quickly, and soon the entire plate of sheep's head meat was gone.
Aunt smiled and asked, "Is this sheep's head meat good?"
Wang Liang nodded and said, "It tastes great! Is there more? Our daughter wants to eat some too."
As he said this, he patted his belly with his hand.
Aunt laughed out loud, her eyes squinting into slits as she said, "Xiao Liang, there's no more sheep's head meat left. There are some sheep's entrails; I'll get those for you."
Aunt's boyfriend comes from a wealthy family. She has always wanted to get a marriage certificate with Wang Liang but has not succeeded yet.
Wang Liang shook his head and said, "Our daughter doesn't like sheep's entrails; she just wants to eat sheep's head meat."
Aunt furrowed her brows, looking somewhat troubled. "During this festive season, every household is eating lamb head meat, but I really have no way to get it."
As soon as Aunt finished speaking, Wang Liang's expression changed, his face darkening. "You have sheep in the east room, and you're telling me you can't get lamb head meat?"
Aunt explained, "The sheep in the east room are all lambs; they can't be slaughtered yet."
Wang Liang retorted, "What can't be slaughtered? They're all sheep."
After saying this, he turned and walked towards the west room, muttering, "What a lousy place; I'm going back to the city tomorrow."
Hearing Wang Liang say this, Aunt panicked and rushed in front of him. "Don't go! It's just a lamb, right? I can slaughter it; is that okay?"
Wang Liang smiled and said, "I want to pick the lamb myself."
With a cheerful demeanor, Wang Liang walked into the east room and pointed at Little Flower Goat. "I'll take this one; who told it to be a Flower Goat? Its color is different from the others."
"Alright, let's slaughter this one," Aunt agreed.
Aunt reached out to grab Little Flower Goat, which let out a piercing cry as it scrambled around in the small box. However, Aunt managed to catch it.
She took Little Flower Goat to the yard, and Wang Liang followed her outside.
Aunt instructed, "Xiao Qi, go to the storage room and bring me the kitchen knife."
I said, "Aunt, this lamb is too small; can we really slaughter it?"
Aunt frowned; she seemed hesitant.
Seeing Aunt's uncertainty, Wang Liang grew displeased. He patted his belly and said irritably, "Daughter, your mother won't even let you have a piece of meat. Let's just leave."
Upon hearing Wang Liang's words, Aunt's expression changed immediately. She carried the lamb into the storage room.
Soon after, a tragic cry came from the lamb.
Aunt had slaughtered the lamb and tossed its head and body into a pot to boil.
Wang Liang's face lit up with a smile as he leaned over and kissed Aunt on the cheek.
Aunt said, "Xiao Qi, go get some dry firewood from the storage room."
Just as she finished speaking, our door was pushed open, and Grandfather and Grandma returned.
Grandma's belly was still quite large; she looked much older than before.
Aunt asked, "Mom, why is your belly so big?"
Grandma furrowed her brows, remaining silent as she walked straight into the house, with Grandfather following closely behind.
As soon as Grandma entered, her voice echoed from within, "Where is that Little Flower Goat?"
She soon emerged from the house, her face filled with panic.
