Grandfather grew anxious and asked Aunt, "Wen He, have you seen the Flower Goat we keep in the east room?"
Aunt was taken aback for a few seconds, then pointed at the pot and whispered, "It's in the pot."
Grandfather's eyes widened in shock as he walked over to the large pot and lifted the lid, revealing it filled to the brim with lamb meat. He collapsed onto the ground, crying out, "Why on earth did you slaughter the lamb? Are you trying to kill your mother?"
Aunt looked at Grandfather in confusion and said, "Dad, it's just a lamb. How could that possibly endanger my mother? I slaughtered this lamb for your son-in-law; he has your granddaughter in his belly."
Grandfather looked around and asked, "Son-in-law? Where is he?"
Aunt paused for a moment, then looked around. There were only a few of us in the yard; Wang Liang was nowhere to be seen.
Where had Wang Liang gone?
Aunt shouted, "Wang Liang!"
There was no response.
Aunt rubbed her eyes vigorously and yelled again, "Wang Liang!"
Still no answer.
Grandfather then asked Aunt, "Did you encounter anything unusual on your way back?"
Aunt furrowed her brow and recalled carefully, "On the way back, Wang Liang said his stomach hurt and wanted to use the bathroom. He ran behind a tree and took a while to come back."
Grandfather sighed and asked, "Were there a few large cypress trees behind that tree?"
Aunt nodded. "Yes, there are about seven or eight cypress trees."
Grandfather said helplessly, "That place isn't clean; Wang Liang may have been swallowed up. Your eyes have been blinded by that thing, making it hard for you to discern truth from falsehood."
Aunt was clearly panicking. She said, "I don't believe it; I need to go check."
After saying this, Aunt ran out of the yard.
Grandfather shook his head helplessly and walked over to Grandma. He said, "Old woman, the Flower Goat is dead. It's really angry this time; it didn't even give us a chance to collect its body. Tomorrow will be the third day; what should we do?"
Grandma replied, "We're human beings; how could we be frightened by a goat?"
She took a few puffs from her cigarette and continued, "Just use the method of slaughtering it and kill it."
Grandfather frowned and whispered, "But the Flower Goat has already become a spirit. At our age, how can we kill it? Instead, let's return its silver ornaments and hand over the task of collecting its body."
Grandma shook her head in disapproval. "How can we give away the silver jewelry we have? We'll discuss it properly when Wen He returns." After saying this, she leaned back against the ground and smoked. Her belly was enormous, and I worried that her skin might stretch to the point of tearing.
It wasn't until evening that Aunt returned, cradling a piece of human skin. It was the skin of Wang Liang, stained with blood and still clinging to some flesh; all the internal organs had been devoured. That thing had a particular taste for human entrails.
Aunt cried out, "Mom, Dad, Wang Liang is dead, and we haven't even gotten our marriage certificate yet."
Grandma glanced at Wang Liang's skin and impatiently replied, "I'm about to die myself, and you're still thinking about a marriage certificate!"
Aunt wiped her tears and asked Grandma, "What happened? Why do you keep talking about death?"
Grandma said, "The Flower Goat you slaughtered has become a spirit!"
Aunt's eyes widened in fear.
Grandfather explained the whole situation to Aunt.
Grandma added, "That Flower Goat is coming tomorrow. We don't know how it will retaliate against our family; we need to take the initiative."
Aunt's voice trembled as she spoke, "Mom, I have no enmity with that Flower Goat; it won't harm me, right? I want to go back to the town."
As soon as Aunt finished speaking, Grandma raised her hand and slapped her hard, scolding, "You unfilial daughter! You still want to escape! Your father and I are getting old; we rely on you for care. Let me tell you, the Flower Goat is your doing; even if you run away, it will chase you down."
Aunt seemed a bit dazed but understood Grandma's meaning. She nodded repeatedly, saying, "I won't run away; that Flower Goat must be killed!"
When Aunt said this, a fierce look appeared on her face.
Grandma spoke again, "Prepare a feast tomorrow and make some fruit wine for the Flower Goat. First, try to persuade it to leave. If it doesn't go away, then we'll behead it."
As Grandma said this, a fierce glint shone in her eyes.
The next day arrived in a blur. Just as dawn broke, Grandfather was busy cooking in the storeroom.
Aunt was sharpening knives in the yard.
While sharpening the knife, Aunt asked, "Mom, do you think that Flower Goat will definitely come?"
Grandma took a puff of her cigarette and replied, "It will come; it definitely will. The silver jewelry it collects from corpses is still in my hands."
After saying this, Grandma pulled out a piece of silver jewelry the size of a pebble from her pocket.
Grandfather prepared eight dishes and placed them on the table, while Grandma poured a few bowls of wine. As the sun began to set and darkness enveloped the surroundings, the Flower Goat still did not appear.
Grandma grew anxious and went to the door to check, but there was still no sign of it. Grandfather started to suspect something and whispered, "Old woman, do you think the Flower Goat knows we plan to kill it and is too scared to come?"
Just as Grandfather finished speaking, there was a knock at the door—"knock knock knock." Upon hearing the knocking sound, both Grandfather and Grandma immediately tensed up. Grandfather hurriedly pushed me into the east room and forbade me from coming out.
