After the opponent served, we began our final defense. The opponent's Point Guard controlled the ball at the top of the arc, wasting time. I moved in front of him to block his path; we had to stop their final attack, or we would lose. I seized the opportunity to rush in and steal the ball from the Point Guard, but he quickly spun away from my hand and made a fast bounce pass to another player. The latter stepped back and took a shot, and A Fei came charging in to block it. The ball bounced off and flew up; Ouyang barely touched it before it was snatched by another player from the opposing team, who then passed it back to their Point Guard, who jumped again at the top of the arc and made a three-pointer! With only thirteen seconds left in the game, we were down by six points—defeat was inevitable! After we inbounded the ball, I ran like crazy to the free-throw line and passed it to Ouyang at the top of the arc. Ouyang caught it outside the three-point line and made the shot! We had to give it our all; if we lost this group match, we would be at a disadvantage for the entire series. Although this match wasn't a matter of life and death, it would determine the course of our competition.
With six seconds left on the clock, we were still down by three points, and it was Flying Team's possession. We were already sentenced to defeat. After their inbound pass, the Point Guard tossed it high to the Center. The Center passed it out to a forward, who threw it hard toward the basket. The ball hit the rim heavily and bounced away. The referee immediately blew the whistle signaling the end of the game. The final score was 58; we lost our opening match in Beijing with a record of 0 wins and 1 loss against our next opponent. As Ouyang walked off the court, he stomped heavily on the floor. The Triplet Legion huddled together celebrating their victory while we three silently walked into the Locker Room to change clothes. "Damn! We had a chance to win! What a waste!" Ouyang grumbled as he took off his shirt. I tried to comfort him: "It's okay; it's just the beginning of group matches. Our next opponent is crucial; there's still a chance." Ouyang sighed and put on his clothes.
After leaving Kuda Square, we walked down the street. "The weather feels strange today—just cloudy without rain—but at least there's wind; it's quite cool," A Fei said as he looked up to feel the breeze on his face. Before I knew it, we had arrived in front of that restaurant at Yataogong. My gaze unconsciously locked onto its window; it felt so familiar. "Jie, let's go! Why are you daydreaming?" Ouyang urged.
A Fei seemed to have guessed something and placed a hand on my shoulder: "Jie, stop staring; it's time to go back." He then wrapped his arm around my shoulder and continued walking back. Once I snapped out of my thoughts, I smiled at them and kept moving forward. For some reason, I suddenly thought of Ya, recalling her graceful demeanor and pure innocence. After returning to our hotel, we gathered together to discuss the reasons for our failure before heading out for dinner. After eating, feeling bored, I suggested going for a walk outside. Ouyang was also interested and insisted on joining me. I told him I was just going to hang out on the main road for a bit, which made him look suspicious but he didn't follow me out.
Walking along Beijing's main road lifted my spirits; even though we lost the game, at least I could enjoy another stroll through Beijing's night market. Before long, I found myself at the entrance of that park again. After taking a leisurely walk inside, I sat down on a bench with my hands in my pockets and closed my eyes facing upwards—absorbing some essence from nature—the gentle breeze felt refreshing beyond words; it was truly delightful. If I could live here as a Beijinger, that would be such an enjoyable experience—of course, it's essential for cars to emit less exhaust.
"Jie... is that really you?" Suddenly, a very familiar voice reached my ears. I froze for a moment before slowly opening my eyes and turning my head... It was indeed Ya! She still looked as pure and lovely as ever, with her straight bangs framing her shoulders in a pink dress as she gazed at me with innocent big eyes filled with sorrow. "It's been a year; why haven't you chatted with me on QQ? It seems like you're intentionally avoiding me—have you been playing with me all along?" Ya asked with some agitation as tears welled up in her eyes.
Seeing her made me feel completely at a loss for words. "Ya, I'm sorry; I'm really sorry... I'm just such an idiot." I lowered my head in remorse; at that moment, I didn't know how to express my apology—just saying sorry felt inadequate and irresponsible. I couldn't even bear to look into her eyes; such a kind-hearted soul had been hurt by me.
"You don't need to apologize anymore; it's my fault for being too foolish—waiting all this time just to see you again. But now I want to ask you one thing: were your words last time truly heartfelt or were you just playing with me?" Ya asked as she looked into my eyes.
I replied slowly: "Ya, what I said last time came from my heart; every word was true—but I have a girlfriend now; I can't betray her... Let's turn last year's memories into our most beautiful dream instead—we can still be good friends."
"Xiang Jie, I hate you!" Ya choked out as she stood up abruptly and turned to leave. I grabbed her arm: "Ya, please listen to me."
"I won't listen! I'm not listening to anything! You're just a big liar! I never want to see you again in this lifetime!" Ya cried as she wiped her tears away while running out of the park. Watching her retreating figure made my heart ache; it felt so unfair towards Ya—it was my mistake alone—why should she suffer for my wrongdoings?
