He flipped a token in his hand, on which the character for "Palace" was engraved. This was Gong Gan's token, from which he had gathered a wealth of information. Gong Gan belonged to a branch of the Gong Family, and due to his decent strength, he was sent to Shu Cang to assist the family with their affairs. Upon arriving in Shu Cang, he changed his name for convenience, adopting the identity of "Gong."
"I never expected that these prominent families appear glamorous on the surface but are so sordid behind the scenes," he sighed, tossing Gong Gan's token into the lava. Such things should not be kept on him; he wasn't afraid of the Gong Family as long as they didn't discover his presence.
"Boss, what is a prominent family? What does sordid mean?" Hearing Mo Wen's words, Xiao Hei turned to him with a curious expression.
"Uh... well, let me explain it to you. You could easily be deceived if you go out like this." Seeing Xiao Hei's demeanor, Mo Wen felt it necessary to instill some common knowledge about the world in him, especially to prevent Xiao Hei from using the term sordid in reference to himself. "A prominent family is a clan with many members who are related by blood. As for sordid, it means bad—like that person who wants to capture you. Of course, he has done many other sordid things..."
Gong Gan had revealed two pieces of information to threaten him into abandoning any thoughts of killing him. One incident involved Gong Gan himself and occurred several years ago when the Gong Family wiped out an entire prominent family overnight, leaving no one alive and subsequently burning down their residence. The other incident involved a descendant of the Gong Family who was killed outside; later, through various means, the Gong Family tracked down the murderer. This individual was powerful, though Gong Gan did not know his exact realm. In the end, the Gong Family dispatched personnel who spent decades pursuing this person across several continents until they captured him. They used Bone-Eating Worms to devour his torso and eventually submerged his head in poison, allowing it to slowly kill his Shen Hun. By the time he finally died, ten years had passed since his capture. Gong Gan shared these stories to convey that whether one belonged to a prominent family or was a powerful individual, offending the Gong Family would lead to dire consequences.
Of course, Mo Wen wouldn't judge the entire Gong Family as sordid based solely on these two incidents. People are diverse; within any large clan, there are bound to be individuals who tarnish their family's reputation. However, based on what Gong Gan had said afterward, it seemed that most members of this Gong Family were indeed like that. Gong Gan was sent by the Gong Family to maintain "order" in the Shu Cang Empire. For reasons unknown, various forces coveted the unclaimed territory of Cang Yun but dared not openly control it; all major powers secretly manipulated certain Empires. On the surface, these Empires appeared autonomous but were merely puppet regimes. Mo Wen had heard about this from Yin Qian long ago. The major forces would send personnel to support their chosen Empires, but these individuals could only operate in secrecy—just like Gong Gan—often even having to abandon their original surnames.
Mo Wen initially thought these people were sent to help govern because that’s what Yin Qian had said; however, Gong Gan’s mission was quite the opposite. Under orders from his superiors, he gathered Shou Gui and Liu San in Shu Cang and engaged in all sorts of nefarious activities—robbing travelers and committing murder and arson were part of his tasks, with most of the spoils turned over to the family. Creating chaos on one's own turf seemed counterproductive; there must be another motive behind such actions. This kind of operation truly left one perplexed.
