Upon arriving at Yuce High School, I discovered it was morning before classes started, and the students were all active on the playground. As we walked through the school and crossed the playground, many students turned to look at us. I heard a group of girls discussing, "Look, it's almost finals, yet so many new students have suddenly come to our school, and they are all tall boys. That middle-aged man in front must be their teacher. Did all the teachers transfer here too?" Hearing this made me feel both amused and exasperated; these three girls were quite naive. Given the situation, it was clear they weren't new transfers—"Dream Chasers!" Suddenly, a sharp shout from a boy caught our attention. We turned to see several skinny boys looking at us with admiration. Our reputation truly endures; this year's Street Basketball Championship National Championship is hosted by the Guangzhou Golden Eagles. I didn't expect that our title as last year's champions would still attract so many loyal fans.
After arriving at Yuce High School's gymnasium, their players were already practicing. Once we entered, they immediately recognized us. "Xiang Jie, Yu Chengfei, Ouyang Shangqiang!" they shouted. How did they know Ouyang? He wasn't even a member of Dream Chasers. They ran over, and one tall, skinny boy smiled and said, "It's really you! You actually came to compete at our Yuce! Hahaha..." The guy became increasingly excited and burst into laughter. Watching him like this made me feel a bit uneasy, so I quickly placed my hand on his shoulder and said, "Calm down, calm down! Speak slowly; don't get too carried away. I'm just a messenger; keep it cool." I even patted his shoulder a couple of times. If he couldn't catch his breath, it could be dangerous; his parents wouldn't let me off easy.
After chatting for a bit, I learned that ever since our Dream Chasers Team won the National Championship last year, they had been following us closely. He referred to us as the pride of Hebei High School. He also knew when we won the Cangzhou city championship this summer, which is why he recognized our trio; Ouyang was riding on Dream Chasers' coattails. We walked into the Locker Room amidst their cheers. Once the door closed, Li Kanglin couldn't hold back any longer and walked over with an envious tone: "Wow! You three are really popular! Jack and Feige brought Ouyang out; you must take me along for next year's Street Basketball Championship!" Tu Lei, Liu Xiao, and Wei Weiwei immediately rushed over: "Me too! You can't leave me out!" We were instantly surrounded by them; we were just about to cry for help when Teacher Qiu shouted loudly: "Stop it! What kind of behavior is this for team members? Stand straight!"
Teacher Qiu's words were powerful; we immediately stood at attention. "Finish the game first before discussing unrelated matters; don't disrupt team morale!" Teacher Qiu continued sternly. We all lowered our heads in silence when suddenly the door opened, and the head coach walked in: "Coach Qiu, it's time; we need to go on." Upon hearing this, Teacher Qiu turned around and extended his hand: "Come on, it's time to get ready." We all placed our hands on top of each other and shouted once more: "Let's go!" Then we pushed open the door and walked onto the court. The Yuce High School players were already practicing mid-range shots on the court while some home team students sat sparsely in the stands. We quickly got into warm-up mode as well, running and shooting to familiarize ourselves with the court. I noticed that the opposing players kept looking at us with strange smiles; it was clear they were excited about facing us. Was it really that exaggerated? I wondered how long the residual heat from our Street Basketball championship would last. Of course, I hoped that this miracle of high school basketball would continue to ignite interest in Street Basketball among all students in Hebei.
With the referee's whistle signaling the start of our game, A Fei jumped for the tip-off against that tall skinny guy who played forward. A Fei was slightly shorter than him—only about two centimeters difference. The referee tossed the ball into the air; A Fei leaped up simultaneously with the opposing forward for possession. The ball was tapped to their guard who quickly passed it to their point guard. The latter slowly dribbled beyond the three-point line before passing it to Power Forward who jumped explosively for a dunk. Li Kanglin and Lu Yinghao immediately jumped to block him but surprisingly found their hands couldn't stop the Power Forward's strong arms from making a successful dunk through their gap! The entire crowd erupted in applause; we were astonished as well! The opposing Power Forward was barely under 1.9 meters tall—how could he possess such intimidation under the basket? Wasn't our inside defense strong enough? His performance reminded me of Mulin—so powerful! I wondered if adding their 1.95-meter Center would put our twin towers completely on the defensive.
After we inbounded the ball, I faced their 1.73-meter point guard with possession. Using quick crossovers, I easily shook him off and took a long-range shot that went in smoothly. To my surprise, their point guard looked at me with admiration and smiled foolishly as if amazed by my shot—was it really necessary to react like that just because I scored? I suddenly felt like I was reaching superstar status akin to Kobe or AI Iverson or Yao Ming! After they inbounded again, their point guard seemed unusually active against me—first dribbling left then right without passing out the ball. Seizing my chance, I dashed over and lifted my right hand to steal it from him before driving toward the edge of the paint where I quickly lobbed it up for Li Kanglin who jumped up ready for an alley-oop—but unexpectedly a strong guy jumped higher than him ahead of time and swatted it away from Yuce's forward! It was Yuce High School's 1.95-meter Giant Center who intercepted it mid-air! Yuce High School's two big men truly had some skills!
