The night was deep and dark, with flickering candlelight illuminating the solemn face of Daoist Xuanji at the altar in the backyard. He held a peach wood sword, chanting incantations as the sword's tip pointed toward the unconscious Li Yun. Su Mu stood nearby, holding a talisman and vigilantly watching the surroundings.
At first, everything was calm. But as Daoist Xuanji's spell intensified, Li Yun's body began to tremble violently, emitting painful groans. A chilling aura radiated from him, causing the temperature around them to plummet.
Daoist Xuanji, clad in a blue robe and stepping with a Seven Stars stride, gripped the peach wood sword that glimmered faintly with spiritual light. His eyes widened in fury as he glared at Li Yun, shouting, "Wretched creature, reveal your true form at once!" His roar echoed like thunder in the air, shaking the leaves around them.
In an instant, Daoist Xuanji thrust the peach wood sword toward Li Yun's chest with lightning speed. The blade shimmered with a faint glow, seemingly containing boundless power, determined to pierce through this "wretched creature" before him.
Li Yun's body tensed as if pulled by an invisible force, becoming as taut as a bowstring. With this sudden change, his mouth involuntarily opened wide, unleashing a chilling scream that echoed through the heavens. The sound seemed capable of piercing souls, sending shivers down spines.
At that moment, a vague black figure shot out from within Li Yun like a bolt of lightning! It writhed in the air in an eerie and twisted manner, each movement accompanied by a sharp wind and piercing shrieks. The cries resembled those of tormented spirits or night owls, filled with endless resentment and malevolence that reverberated in the silent space, instilling fear.
"Indeed, it is the spirit of the cursed burial ground!" Su Mu gasped internally, his sharp gaze piercing through the darkness to lock onto the black figure. The shadow floated like a ghost, its form flickering in and out of visibility as if it could vanish into the vast night at any moment.
As the shadow drew closer, Su Mu finally discerned its true appearance. The spirit's face was grotesque and terrifying; its paper-white skin was marred by deep bloodstains. Hollow eyes glimmered with an eerie red light that sent chills down one's spine. A sinister smile curled at its lips, revealing sharp yellowed fangs that seemed ready to bite through flesh.
Moreover, a strong stench of decay emanated from the spirit, reminiscent of rotting fish and shrimp piled together. The odor was overwhelming and suffocating; even battle-hardened Su Mu couldn't help but frown. Judging by its appearance and aura alone, this spirit was undoubtedly malevolent and had likely harmed many innocent lives.
The spirit trembled in the darkness before Daoist Xuanji's peach wood sword glowing with mysterious light as if it faced an enemy it feared above all else. Its already ethereal form shook violently as it exerted all its strength to break free from this powerful binding force.
However, Daoist Xuanji would not allow it to escape easily. This experienced and powerful Taoist priest had long been prepared; his grip on the peach wood sword was like that of a nimble spirit snake carving elegant yet lethal arcs in the air. Each swing carried fierce sword energy and righteous aura that ensnared the spirit tightly, leaving no chance for escape.
The spirit emitted piercing shrieks that sounded particularly jarring in the quiet night. Yet even so, it could not alter its fate of being firmly trapped by the peach wood sword. Daoist Xuanji's gaze remained resolute and cold; he felt no pity for the struggling spirit. He understood that if such evil were not eradicated completely, it would bring more disaster and suffering to the world.
“Su Mu, use your talisman!” Daoist Xuanji shouted.
Su Mu stood in place with a serious expression, gripping the mysterious talisman tightly in his hand, his gaze resolute and sharp. He took a deep breath and then suddenly threw the talisman. The moment it left his palm, it ignited into flames, as if sparked by an invisible force.
In an instant, the talisman transformed into a dazzling beam of golden light, racing forth like lightning, directly aimed at the grotesque and malevolent spirit that exuded waves of dark energy. When the golden light collided with the spirit, a hissing sound echoed, followed by a piercing scream that shattered the night.
Struck by the sudden golden light, the spirit trembled violently. The dense black mist surrounding it began to churn violently and was quickly illuminated and consumed by the golden glow. As time passed, the spirit's body ignited like burning paper, flames rapidly spreading until it engulfed its entire form.
In the flickering firelight, one could clearly see the twisted and agonized expression on the spirit's face. Yet no matter how it struggled and resisted, it could not escape this overwhelming power. Ultimately, as the last flicker of flame extinguished, the spirit was reduced to wisps of black smoke that slowly rose and gradually dissipated into the endless night sky.
Li Yun's body also ceased trembling, his breathing gradually stabilizing. Daoist Xuanji sheathed his peach wood sword and let out a long sigh of relief.
“Master, is Young Master Li alright?” Su Mu asked.
Daoist Xuanji nodded. “The spirit has been expelled; he will wake up soon. However, the dark energy within him has not been completely cleared; he will need some medicinal herbs for recovery.”
Su Mu hurried to prepare the herbs. He understood that while this ritual had concluded, the path of cultivation was still long ahead of him, and there was much more to learn.
The next morning, Li Yun awoke feeling much better. Although he did not remember what had happened the night before, the sense of weakness had vanished. His mother was overjoyed, showering Daoist Xuanji and Su Mu with gratitude.
After sending off Li Yun and his mother, Daoist Xuanji turned to Su Mu and said, “Mu Er, this incident reminds us that the world is fraught with danger and human hearts are unpredictable. We must not only cultivate ourselves but also learn to protect ourselves and those around us.”
Su Mu nodded solemnly, committing his master's words to memory. He knew that the weight of responsibility on his shoulders was growing heavier; he had to work harder in his cultivation to bear the duty of safeguarding Tianji Sect.
