After leaving the cave, Su Mu continued his journey southwest. The rugged mountain path gradually transformed into a gentle country trail, filled with the fragrant scent of earth. After walking for about half a day, Su Mu spotted a small village in the distance, with curling smoke rising from chimneys and the sounds of chickens and dogs creating a peaceful scene.
As Su Mu approached the village entrance, he noticed a group of villagers gathered under a large tree, their faces etched with worry and sighs escaping their lips.
Inquiring about their troubles, Su Mu learned that a strange illness had recently swept through the village, infecting many residents. The symptoms included persistent high fever, extreme weakness, and relentless coughing; in severe cases, some had even fallen into unconsciousness.
In this seemingly tranquil village, an unexpected plague loomed over everyone's hearts. The only doctor in the village appeared helpless against such an unusual ailment. Upon hearing this news, fear and unease quickly spread among the villagers, casting a heavy shadow over the entire community.
However, in this moment of despair, a young man named Su Mu stepped forward. Though he was not from the village, his compassionate heart as a healer compelled him to take action. Resolutely, he decided to stay in the village and do everything in his power to help those suffering from the illness.
Following the anxious villagers, Su Mu hurried to the home of the most severely ill resident. There he found the patient weakly lying on a simple bed, his complexion pale as if drained of blood; his breathing was rapid and erratic, as if each breath was a struggle against death. What was even more distressing was that he had completely lost consciousness and had fallen into a deep coma.
Without a moment's hesitation, Su Mu approached to carefully observe the patient's symptoms. He first checked the patient's tongue and pulse for basic vital signs and then detailedly questioned the anxious family members about the circumstances leading up to the illness and any past medical history. After thorough contemplation and analysis, drawing upon years of medical experience, Su Mu initially deduced that this was likely a respiratory disease caused by an unknown mysterious virus.
However, this preliminary judgment was far from sufficient. To truly find an effective treatment method, it was essential to determine the specific characteristics and transmission routes of this virus. Therefore, Su Mu resolved to personally venture into the mountains to collect samples of relevant herbs for further research. Despite the potential difficulties and unknown dangers that lay ahead, he felt no fear; saving lives was an obligation he embraced as a healer.
Based on records from medical texts, he found several herbs around the village that might be related to this disease. He brought these herbs back to the village, ground them carefully, soaked them in spring water, and then applied the resulting potion to the patient's wrist to observe his reactions.
After repeated trials, Su Mu finally discovered an herb that could alleviate the patient's symptoms. He combined this herb with several others to brew a medicinal soup for the patient.
A few hours later, the patient's high fever began to subside, and his breathing became much steadier. Seeing this improvement brought some relief to Su Mu's heart; however, he knew that this was merely treating the symptoms rather than addressing the root cause. To completely cure this illness, he needed to find its source.
Su Mu continued his research and discovered that the disease primarily spread through air and water sources.
He speculated that the nearby water source in the village might have been contaminated, leading to the outbreak of the virus. Thus, he walked upstream along the village creek, carefully observing the surrounding environment.
Eventually, Su Mu discovered a polluted water source upstream. It turned out that a small workshop had been discharging untreated wastewater directly into the creek, contaminating the water supply.
Su Mu immediately approached the owner of the workshop, explained the situation, and demanded that he cease the discharge of wastewater. Initially, the workshop owner was uncooperative, but under Su Mu's insistence and the pressure from the villagers, he ultimately agreed to stop polluting.
After addressing the source of pollution, Su Mu taught the villagers how to purify their water using herbs and guided them on how to prevent such diseases.
With Su Mu's help, the strange illness in the village was effectively controlled, and the villagers gradually regained their health. They were immensely grateful to Su Mu and began to refer to him as "Divine Doctor."
Su Mu politely declined the villagers' heartfelt invitations to stay and continued on his journey in medicine. He knew that there was still a long road ahead and that this place was not meant for him to linger.
