The next day, I completed the discharge procedures. The doctor still wanted to persuade me to continue my treatment in the hospital, but I shook my head. Since the outcome was already determined, I wanted to spend my final days in a place I was familiar with.
Back home, I turned off my phone, drew the curtains, and sealed myself in this little world. Standing in front of the mirror, I looked at my gaunt face and bald scalp, tears silently streaming down my cheeks. Ten years of youth had led to this kind of ending.
Messages from friends piled up in WeChat, but I didn’t reply to any of them. Occasionally, I would open my Moments and self-torture by scrolling through posts about Gu Ting and Lin Weiwei. They truly wasted no time at all. During the days I spent in the hospital, they had already gotten engaged.
Lin Weiwei wore the ring I once fantasized about on her finger, smiling radiantly in front of the camera. “The wedding dress photos that Ting Ge customized for me are finally done! Thank you, Ting Ge, for letting me experience what it feels like to be a bride.” The accompanying picture showed Gu Ting in a sharp suit, while Lin Weiwei donned a white gown, resembling a prince and princess from a fairy tale.
I stared at the photo for a long time but found that my heart had gradually become devoid of any emotion. Gu Ting sent me a message from his new number, stating that the photos were just taken for fun with Lin Weiwei and that they weren’t really getting married. He asked where I was and mentioned he had brought me my favorite Spicy Hot Pot.
I let out a self-deprecating laugh but didn’t respond. The man who once made my heart race had now become a stranger. The sunset outside was just right, casting a golden hue over the entire room. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the crowd come and go below, I suddenly felt very calm.
Life is so short, and I had wasted too much time on people who weren’t worth it. I opened my notebook and began to write my farewell letter.
After handling all the inheritance distribution, I sent my best friend, Xiao Ru, one last message: "Ru Ru, if I die, remember to scatter my ashes in the sea. I want to drift freely like the waves."
As night fell, I lay in bed listening to the chirping of insects outside. Drowsiness gradually overtook me. I closed my eyes, a faint smile on my lips. In the last moment of consciousness, I seemed to hear the sound of the waves and see the vast blue ocean.
My phone screen lit up with Xiao Ru's frantic calls and messages. But there was no one left to answer; only the moonlight quietly spilled onto the floor.
I opened my eyes to find myself floating in mid-air. I had thought I would be reborn directly, but instead, I had become a wandering soul, drifting beside Gu Ting.
Sunlight filtered through my transparent form as I watched Gu Ting and Lin Weiwei laughing and chatting as they walked down the street, feeling no stirrings in my heart.
"Ting Ge, do you think Anxin Jie will be angry?" Lin Weiwei pouted playfully while shaking Gu Ting's arm. "Isn't it too much for us to take wedding photos like this?"
Gu Ting's gaze flickered, but his tone was dismissive: "No, Anxin is understanding; she won't mind. Besides, isn't this what you've always wanted?"
I watched coldly as everything unfolded. Gu Ting, you are mistaken; this time I truly won't be coming back.
That night, I observed Lin Weiwei snuggling against Gu Ting, asking him to buy her a designer bag. Gu Ting responded gently but glanced at his phone as if waiting for something.
Early the next morning, Gu Ting hummed a tune as he dialed my number. Sunlight streamed through the curtain gaps onto his freshly washed hair, but his relaxed expression gradually tightened.
A cold voice on the other end delivered the message: "Sorry, the number you have dialed is unavailable."
He frowned and dialed several more times, but no one answered.
"Strange, this girl is really serious about playing hide and seek," he muttered to himself as he drove to my apartment.
The door lock had already been changed; the landlord informed him that it had been empty for several days. A hint of panic finally crossed Gu Ting's face.
He began calling everyone he knew, asking about my whereabouts. He searched every possible place: hospitals, companies, social circles. I watched as the anxiety in his eyes deepened, stirring an indescribable turmoil within me.
Finally, he remembered my best friend, Xiao Ru. "Xiao Ru, is Anxin with you?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before it erupted into a frantic scream. "Gu Ting, how dare you ask? Anxin is gone, and she will never come back! You scum, do you know you caused her death?"
"What... what do you mean she will never come back?" Gu Ting's voice began to tremble.
"She had cancer. While you were flaunting your love in front of her at the hospital, now she has found peace. Are you satisfied?"
The sound of the phone smashing against the ground was particularly sharp as Gu Ting slumped onto the sofa, his face pale. I stood before him, watching as tears streamed down his face.
"Anxin..."
He clutched his head in agony. "I can't believe it. A good person like her, how could she just be gone?"
