Once on the court, Ouyang jumped for the tip-off against the opposing Point Guard. The ball was tapped to us by Ouyang, and I quickly drove towards their frontcourt. Using a rapid crossover step, I maneuvered past three defenders and scored with a layup. As I ran back to our half and celebrated with A Fei, I deliberately glanced back at the opposing players. The opposing Point Guard looked at me calmly. After their inbound pass, the Point Guard slowly dribbled across midcourt before suddenly cutting inside to pass to the Power Forward. The Power Forward caught the ball and scored with a hook shot. They continued this style of play throughout the game—no flashy dunks or dazzling footwork, just solid fundamentals. It lacked any glitz, which made it seem uninteresting at first glance, but this straightforward approach completely bewildered us. By the end of the first quarter, we found ourselves trailing Experiment Three 5-0. As we left the court, I felt as if we had been completely overwhelmed by Experiment Three during that quarter.
"Their style of play is very solid; we need to match them with steady defense," Teacher Qiu said as Liu Xiao replaced Jie to focus on defense while Du took over for Ouyang. "A Fei can stay on the court a bit longer..." Teacher Qiu split us three swordsmen up; my dazzling footwork and Ouyang's three-point shooting were offensive strategies while A Fei's chasing blocks and screens were more suited for defense. After Liu Xiao and Du entered the game, they were particularly aggressive on defense, using basic footwork to counter the opponents effectively. However, focusing primarily on defense meant our scoring suffered; by halftime, we were tied 40-40 after only scoring a handful of points in that quarter. Fortunately, we managed to recover those two points we had lost earlier and entered the Locker Room with a tie score.
"In the first half, we matched them defensively; in the second half, let's focus on offense—faster is better! Let's explode with energy, team! Their efficiency is good but their scoring is dismal; we'll use that to run them down!" Teacher Qiu exclaimed passionately.
"Alright!" We felt invigorated after hearing him speak; finally, we could go all out. As we stepped out of the Locker Room like generals heading into battle, our trio reunited on the court alongside Tu Lei and Li Kanglin—two explosive young players. After their inbound pass, I seized an opportunity to steal the ball successfully and then made a long pass to Ouyang. Ouyang received it and shot from beyond the arc but was blocked by the rushing Point Guard. A Fei picked up the loose ball and passed it back to me; I caught it at the top of the arc and shot another three-pointer—swish! With that three-pointer made, our team's shooting percentage surged as Tu Chuanfeng executed three powerful dunks that completely disrupted their formation. Li Kanglin showcased his dominance with two self-rebounds and put-backs. As their last-second three-point attempt clanged off without touching rim, we ended that quarter having scored significantly more points than them—69-64—gaining a five-point advantage heading into the final quarter.
"Great job! This strategy is effective; let's keep it up!" Teacher Qiu finally praised us. We all shouted in unison: "Yulin will win!" Then we stepped onto the court for the final quarter with our trio still intact. Our lead was not enough to secure victory yet; we needed to keep pushing hard since Experiment Three was an established traditional powerhouse with top-tier basketball culture in the city. They continued their steady play in an attempt to wear us down while our fast-paced game was slowed considerably by their tactics. With just one minute left in the game, the score stood at 84-83; our lead had shrunk to just one point instead of expanding as hoped.
This time we had possession of the ball; I slowly brought it up court before passing it back to A Fei who took two steps forward before attempting a step-back jumper that missed. The opposing Center grabbed the rebound but did not rush into a fast break; instead he passed it back to their Point Guard who began controlling tempo.
As their Point Guard dribbled past midcourt, I stepped up to defend him but he suddenly accelerated past me. I quickly retreated two steps to catch up again before positioning myself in front of him once more. He flashed me a strange smile before slamming the ball down hard; it bounced through my legs towards behind me—but luckily I reacted quickly enough to stretch my hand back and intercept it! The opposing Point Guard was stunned—perhaps he had never seen someone steal like that before! Holding onto the ball, I passed it directly behind me to Ouyang who was positioned just inside the three-point line—he shot and scored! 86-83! With only twenty seconds left in regulation time, they inbounded and began running down the clock while we switched to a tight 2-3 zone defense for one last push—we didn’t want overtime.
"Brother Jie (A Fei), let’s go!" Situ Yanan and Sha Xiaomei rushed over just as they called out to us; distracted for just a moment allowed Experiment Three to launch a quick attack—their Point Guard took advantage of this opening and drove straight for the basket! Realizing what happened too late, I sprinted over as he suddenly passed out to their Shooting Guard beyond the arc!
