Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi's faces turned pale in an instant.
Seeing the gun in my hand and the determination in my eyes, they finally realized I was not joking.
"One."
Zhang Hao's bravado crumbled immediately; he stiffly took a half step back, fear evident in his eyes.
"Two."
"Su Qing, you can't do this!" Lin Mengyi screamed, her voice filled with terror. "Aren't we best friends?"
I let out a cold laugh. "Three."
The gun was aimed directly at Zhang Hao's forehead, my finger lightly resting on the trigger.
Zhang Hao seemed to lose all his strength, grabbing Lin Mengyi and stumbling backward.
"Let's go! We need to get out of here!"
As he ran, he glanced back, hatred and fear intertwining in his gaze. "You'll regret this, Su Qing!"
Watching their panicked retreat, I lowered the gun, feeling no turmoil within.
In my past life, I might have softened, but in this life, I had already seen through their true nature.
"Sister Su, who are they?"
Li Hu asked cautiously.
"Unimportant people," I replied flatly. "Let's go; we need to continue searching for supplies."
A week later, as more survivors were rescued by us, rumors about me began to spread quietly throughout the nearby areas.
"Sister Su, your name is getting around," Li Hu reported with a smile.
I shrugged noncommittally; these empty titles meant nothing to me.
The lessons from my past life taught me that only true strength could protect myself and those I cared about.
"Chief, we have a situation!"
Several military off-road vehicles suddenly approached from a distance, and a dozen fully armed men jumped out of the cars.
“It’s the people from the North Base!” Li Hu whispered to me.
The leader was a man in his forties. He stepped forward and saluted respectfully, saying, “Miss Su, I am Chen Qiang, the aide-de-camp of General Lei Zhan. I’m here to thank you for clearing out the zombie horde and rescuing the survivors.”
He moved a large box over, filled with ammunition and medical supplies.
“Additionally, General Lei would like to invite you to join the North Base. With your strength and abilities, you would undoubtedly secure an important position.”
I looked into his sincere eyes. The North Base was the largest shelter within a hundred miles, well-stocked and orderly.
“Please allow me a few days to consider,” I replied calmly.
“Of course, here’s my contact information. You can reach out whenever you’ve made your decision.”
At that moment, I caught sight of two figures lurking in the shadows of a distant building. Even from afar, I recognized them as Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi.
They were hiding in the dark, their eyes coldly fixated on everything before them. Zhang Hao's face twisted with jealousy and resentment, while Lin Mengyi stared at the supplies like a starving dog, greed gleaming in her eyes.
These two were alone without supplies or weapons; it was only a matter of time before they became zombie fodder.
Half a month passed in the blink of an eye. I had thought Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi had become zombie food, but unexpectedly, they had stubbornly survived and even allied themselves with a small faction called New Life.
Early this morning, Li Hu came to find me with a tense expression.
“Sister Su, it’s bad! Someone is spreading rumors that your space relies on absorbing others’ life force to sustain itself, and they say we hoard supplies and ignore those in need!”
I scoffed lightly. “Who is spreading such nonsense? It’s obvious without guessing.”
“These rumors have spread widely; many people believe them,” Li Hu said, worry etched on his face.
I shook my head dismissively. “It’s all baseless talk; let them say what they want.”
But things were not that simple.
Three days later, the warehouse at the North Base was suddenly robbed, losing a large quantity of medicines and weapons. Strangely enough, my hairpin was found at the scene.
“Sister Su, Lei Zhan Base has sent someone to investigate!”
Li Hu rushed over to report, his eyes filled with vigilance.
I was not surprised. "Let them come."
I had anticipated that Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi would take action, but I never expected them to be so malicious as to frame me for stealing supplies from the Lei Zhan Base.
Sure enough, within an hour, several fully armed military vehicles drove into the camp.
At the forefront was Lei Zhan, the master of the northern city base.
He was tall and imposing, dressed in a crisp military uniform, with neatly cropped hair and sharp eyes like a hawk.
"Miss Su Qing," Lei Zhan approached me directly, his voice deep and powerful, "someone has reported that you stole supplies from the base. I must personally investigate."
"Oh really? I'm quite curious to know who has the audacity to frame me."
I maintained a calm demeanor, meeting his gaze without fear.
Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi stepped out from behind Lei Zhan, their faces wearing smug smiles.
"Su Qing! We all saw it! You stole the supplies!" Lin Mengyi pointed at me, her voice shrill and piercing.
Zhang Hao quickly added, "She has spatial abilities and can easily hide items in her own space! I saw her sneak into the warehouse that night!"
It was utterly ridiculous.
"And where's your evidence?"
I asked calmly, my gaze firmly locked on Lei Zhan.
Lin Mengyi triumphantly produced a bag. "This was found near your warehouse; it contains a list of stolen items and your hairpin!"
I chuckled lightly. "Is that all? Just a common hairpin found everywhere? I demand a thorough investigation. If it turns out to be a frame-up, I will not let it slide."
Lei Zhan's deep-set eyes scrutinized me closely, as if assessing the truth of my words.
"Su Qing, don't think you can wriggle out of this! You're just a thief!"
Lin Mengyi attempted to continue her tirade.
"Be quiet," Lei Zhan suddenly interjected. "What I need is evidence, not baseless accusations."
Lin Mengyi was taken aback, her face turning pale instantly.
Lei Zhan turned to me, a flicker of an emotion I couldn't decipher passing through his eyes. "You have one day; I await your response."
