I smiled coldly and pulled a USB drive from my pocket. "Mr. Lei Zhan, you don't have to wait a day; I can give you an answer right now."
The expressions on Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi's faces changed instantly.
"What’s on this?" Lei Zhan asked as he took the USB drive, his brow furrowing slightly.
"It's their evidence of wrongdoing."
I snapped my fingers, and Li Hu immediately brought over a laptop. "I knew these two wouldn't give up easily, so I had someone monitor their every move around the clock."
On the computer screen, clear footage showed Zhang Hao and Lin Mengyi sneaking into the warehouse.
"You... how could you!"
Zhang Hao's face turned pale, and he began to stutter.
"These are all fake!" Lin Mengyi screamed, "She's framing us!"
I continued to play the video with a cold smile.
In the footage, Lin Mengyi was seen handing Zhang Hao a card: "Put this at the scene and say it belongs to Su Qing."
"Did you really think I would be unprepared?"
I turned to Lei Zhan. "If you don't believe me, you can send someone to search the new forces' base; the stolen goods should all be there."
"You bitch! This is all your doing!"
Lin Mengyi suddenly lunged at me in a fit of hysteria but was stopped by the guards.
"You coward!"
She then turned to Zhang Hao and began to curse him out, "If it weren't for your cowardice back then, we wouldn't have fallen to this point! I saw through you in the warehouse; you're just a coward!"
Zhang Hao's face turned ashen as they started blaming each other, their disgraceful behavior on full display.
Lei Zhan let out a cold snort and waved his hand, signaling his subordinates to restrain them. "Go search the new forces' base."
Within half an hour, the search team returned with solid evidence. All the stolen goods were found, along with proof of their collusion with other factions.
"Su Qing," Lei Zhan looked at me with admiration in his eyes, "I apologize for my earlier doubts. Not only have you cleared your name, but you've also exposed a potential threat. Your foresight and handling of this situation are commendable."
The apology from Lei Zhan caught me off guard, but I did not show it.
"This is what I should do. In the apocalypse, one must always be wary of others."
"You are right," he said thoughtfully, looking at me. "I have a proposal: join my core team and become my right-hand person. Your skills and intellect are exactly what I need."
I raised an eyebrow.
This was indeed a good opportunity.
After this incident, I realized that Lei Zhan was a sensible person.
"Alright, I agree. But my team must join as a whole."
"Of course," he replied with a slight smile. "Starting tomorrow, you will be a core member of the base."
A week later, Lei Zhan and I led our team deep into a corpse nest to search for supplies.
It was said that there was a stash of precious medical supplies hidden here, but it also harbored extremely dangerous mutated zombies.
"Be careful."
I suddenly sensed movement ahead and grabbed Lei Zhan's arm.
In the next moment, a giant zombie covered in bone spikes dropped from above, its sharp spikes nearly grazing our faces.
"It's a mutant!"
I quickly activated my spatial abilities to relocate the team to safety.
Lei Zhan gathered blinding lightning in his hands and struck the zombie with a powerful blow.
However, the creature's bone armor was too tough, and the lightning was rebounded back at us.
"I'll hold it down; you find an opportunity to attack its weak point!"
I shouted as I used my spatial abilities to create traps that restricted the zombie's movements.
Lei Zhan immediately understood my intent.
His lightning traced beautiful arcs in the air, accurately hitting every opening I created for him; our cooperation was seamless.
When the final strike of thunder pierced through the zombie's skull, we exchanged smiles.
In that moment, I saw admiration and a hint of unnoticeable tenderness in his eyes.
"You two are truly a perfect match," Li Hu remarked sincerely.
I pretended not to hear him and turned to check our spoils.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, the base thrived under the joint efforts of Lei Zhan and me. The tall walls not only defended against the zombie onslaught but also protected the survivors' hopes. Standing atop the watchtower, I gazed down at the orderly living area below, a wave of accomplishment swelling within me.
That day, the patrol team brought back news: Lin Mengyi was dead. It was said that she had been used as bait during an internal conflict and was thrown out to feed the zombies, meeting a tragic end. When I heard this news, I was discussing resource allocation with Lei Zhan. I merely responded with a faint "hm," continuing to jot down notes.
As winter descended, the patrol team discovered a figure huddled in a corner among the ruins on the outskirts of the city. The person was filthy, half of their body already decayed, and one leg was crippled—it was Zhang Hao. His hair was matted, and his eyes were vacant. Upon seeing the patrol team's insignia, a glimmer of hope suddenly sparked in his eyes.
"Help... help me... I have abilities," he managed to croak out, his voice so hoarse it was barely audible. The patrol leader glanced at him and turned to leave. In this cruel world, a crippled beggar held no value.
I had long established a rule: the base's resources were reserved for those who could contribute.
In the evening, Lei Zhan and I stood on the city wall, surveying our surroundings. The setting sun stretched our shadows long, and in the distance, a flock of birds soared across the horizon.
"Do you know?" I said, looking into the distance, "I haven't thought about that hatred for a long time."
Lei Zhan turned to look at me. Despite the harshness of this apocalypse, I had found my true belonging here. One by one, lights flickered on within the walls, illuminating this sanctuary amidst darkness.
"This winter seems particularly cold," I remarked as I tucked my chin into my collar.
"Then wear more layers," Lei Zhan replied, draping his coat over my shoulders. "We still have a long way to go."
