We were completely unprepared for this sudden turn of events. Just moments ago, we thought we were engaged in friendly communication with the other side, only to be attacked without warning.
As we watched the number of monsters gathering in the street below increase, we realized there was no time to ponder why they had turned on us. The Fat Man glanced down and smacked his lips, saying, "Lao Bai, this won't do. We need to think of a way to get out of here quickly; we can't stay any longer."
Of course, I didn't need the Fat Man's reminder. The moment I saw the monsters gathering below, my mind was racing with thoughts on how to handle the situation. "Going downstairs to escape is definitely not an option now; we can only run upstairs," I said.
The Fat Man looked puzzled. "Run upstairs? Is there even a way out?"
"Look at how many monsters are down there now. Even if you, Fat Man, are awesome and have three heads and six arms, there's no way you can fight your way through. If a monster bites or grabs you, it's game over."
Hearing this, the Fat Man glanced down again and swallowed hard. The square below was already swarming with no less than a thousand monsters, and in the distance, a tide of monsters was forming on the streets.
"Xiao Tian, do you remember the parachuting competition held on top of Luminous Tower last year?" I asked. At my question, both Xiao Tian and the Fat Man looked at me with puzzled expressions before suddenly realizing what I meant.
The Luminous Tower stands five hundred twenty meters tall with one hundred sixty-eight floors. Based on last year's parachuting event, it clearly met the minimum jump height of five hundred meters.
And right now, we didn't have a better plan. With so many monsters downstairs, it was only a matter of time before the horde would breach the building.
Given the height of the tower, parachuting gear is standard equipment for firefighting escape kits, kept for emergencies. So we easily found three sets of parachuting gear in the storage room.
However, simply parachuting away wasn't our style—at least not the Fat Man's style.
Just as we found the parachutes in the storage room, the Fat Man spotted a large sealed barrel of gasoline. His eyes gleamed with a sinister light as he stared at it.
I knew what he was thinking. Without hesitation, he began pouring gasoline down the hallway and tossing it downstairs.
That's right; when we left Luminous Tower, we were going to recreate a "barbecue feast," just like when we first arrived at Luminous Tower. It was about having a beginning and an end.
But this time would be the grand finale—on a much larger and more explosive scale.
Soon, gasoline dripped down the stairs in a steady stream as per the Fat Man's plan to empty every last drop from that storage room.
Xiao Tian came over to help, but after moving a few barrels, she was exhausted and sat down, gasping for breath. The Fatty and I continued to move things out, with the Fatty even smashing the warehouse window and tossing barrels down. Due to the height, it took several seconds before we heard a thud as they hit the ground.
In this way, we managed to throw down over eight hundred barrels of gasoline from the warehouse, or pour them into the stairwell, filling the air with a strong scent of gasoline. I urged Xiao Tian to hurry and press the elevator button while the Fatty and I glanced out the window. Below, a dense swarm of monsters had gathered, some already charging towards the building.
On the nearby street, a massive horde of monsters had formed a tide of corpses, slowly moving in our direction towards Luminous Tower. The sight left both of us astonished.
The Fatty decisively ignited the gasoline on the floor of the stairwell. Flames erupted instantly, spreading rapidly downward and sending a wave of heat that made our faces sting. I grabbed three parachutes and pulled Xiao Tian into the elevator just as the Fatty followed with a barrel of gasoline and a box of empty beer bottles.
The elevator shot straight up to the rooftop on the one hundred sixty-eighth floor. To our surprise, there were still monsters on the rooftop. Xiao Tian swiftly drew her knife and killed two, then shot two more in the head.
While we poured gasoline from the barrels into beer bottles, we soaked the fabric caps with gasoline. Clearly, we were making makeshift Molotov cocktails. The Fatty handled this task with ease, as if he had done it every day before.
Before long, twelve simple incendiary devices were ready. We lit them and hurled them downwards. Since we had already thrown hundreds of barrels of gasoline below, with plastic containers smashed and gasoline splattered everywhere, we didn’t need to aim; we simply tossed the Molotov cocktails down.
As soon as they hit the ground, there was an explosion of flames that quickly turned into a sea of fire. The inferno spread rapidly, engulfing those monsters gathered below in its flames as they screamed in madness.
The tide of corpses on Central Avenue noticed the towering flames at Luminous Tower and began moving faster towards us. The Fatty stared blankly at the approaching horde, deep in thought.
I urged Xiao Tian to put on her parachute quickly, but she looked at me with a pitiful expression, indicating that she didn’t know how to do it at all. Parachuting is primarily about having courage; technically, it’s not very complicated. Having done outdoor rock climbing and survival training before, I found it easy.
Since Xiao Tian couldn’t do it (it was really just that she lacked courage), I decided to tie us together so we could jump together—tandem skydiving; yes, that’s definitely a thing!
I knew that the girl was thinking the same thing at that moment.
As I was putting on the parachute gear with Xiao Tian, the chubby guy next to us suddenly pulled out his phone and started fiddling with it skillfully.
I looked at him, feeling a bit speechless, and immediately shouted, "You fat idiot, what the hell are you doing? Hurry up, we need to get out of here!"
The chubby guy continued to focus on his phone, muttering impatiently, "Bridge bean sack~"
Hearing him start to speak in that strange dialect, I decided to ignore him and turned my attention back to Xiao Tian. I held her close and opened the parachute to check the wind direction.
I whispered to Xiao Tian, "Hold on tight to me. We'll float over to the other side of the river together."
Xiao Tian responded with a heavy "mm," burying her head into my chest.
"I'm not going to be satisfied until that horde of corpses is wiped out," the chubby guy said as he quickly donned his parachute and walked over to us.
I glanced at the horde of corpses not far away and asked him, "Do you have any way to attract them over here?"
Upon hearing my question, he flashed a mischievous smile. "You'll find out soon enough."
Then he opened his parachute and jumped ahead towards the other side of the river.
I secured Xiao Tian tightly against my chest, patted her little head, and then opened my own parachute before jumping after him.
The wind was favorable, and within seconds, both our parachutes were successfully deployed.
Xiao Tian seemed a bit anxious; she clung tightly to my waist, her palms sweating as she buried her head deep into my chest, too scared to open her eyes.
I stroked her little head gently, reassuring her not to be afraid.
I signaled to the chubby guy to swing towards the rooftop of the building diagonally across from us instead of directly opposite where it was still hard to distinguish friend from foe amidst the ongoing battle.
He nodded and then pulled out his phone, waving it at me with a wicked grin. I clearly saw him press play.
Suddenly, from the loudspeakers atop Luminous Tower, there erupted a series of loud and crisp “claps,” resembling intense physical collisions. Accompanying this were moans and gasps that sounded almost indulgent: “Mmm~ Mmm~ Ah~ Ah~ Oh my god~ One library~”
I turned my head just in time to see on Luminous Tower's massive 3D holographic screen images of actors from an adult film engaged in a passionate encounter. The lewd sounds and provocative visuals amplified by Luminous Tower's Broadcast Center spread instantly for dozens of kilometers around us.
