"Is it really you? Finally caught you," Madam Ma said, picking up a dumpling with her tweezers and sending it to her mouth.
She chewed while watching me, her gaze akin to that of a predator sizing up its prey.
My heart skipped a beat.
Ma Tao's ex-girlfriend?
Had she misunderstood something?
"Madam Ma, please rest assured, I will marry Ma Tao as soon as possible. How about we sign a contract first?"
I licked my lips. "I haven't touched a single cent of the money you gave me; I'm just waiting for your arrangements."
She lifted her eyelids and glanced at me. "You’re quite sensible for a young girl.
It's a pity, though; Tao is stubborn and still can't forget you after a year apart.
So tell me, why did you break up in the first place?"
"I had my reasons," I murmured, staring at my empty bowl.
Looking down, I could see the large gold chain around my neck, with the pendant being the ring Ma Tao had given me.
"Hmph!" She didn’t care about my reasons; she only cared whether I could complete the task.
"I've accepted this ten million task."
Madam Ma set down her chopsticks and stood up to retrieve a bank card from her bedroom.
"Here is five million. The remaining payment will be given to you after you obtain the marriage certificate," she said.
I nodded. "Alright, you're more generous than I expected."
Her smile froze, and her tone turned sharp. "What do you mean by that?"
"I thought you approached me to save a million," I replied.
The corner of her eye twitched as she shot me a glare. "Stop talking nonsense."
Once she left, I immediately checked my balance.
Confirming that the money had arrived, I transferred it to another card.
This card was newly issued and not linked to any personal information.
After completing all of this, I let out a sigh of relief.
This money was finally in my hands.
Next, I needed to find a way to get closer to Ma Tao.
I walked around the room with my phone in hand and dialed Ran Ran's number.
"Baby, can you do me a favor..."
Ran Ran was furious after hearing this. "Are you out of your mind? Ma Tao was dumped by you, and he still hates you. Even if you go, he might not even look at you."
"How would I know if I don't give it a try?"
"Then go ahead and try," Ran Ran snapped back.
"Oh come on, I know I was wrong. But even without me, someone else would do it anyway. Rather than let someone else benefit, I might as well do it myself."
Ran Ran was so angry she couldn't find the words.
"Ten million!" I tempted her. "We can split it fifty-fifty."
"Fine, then come find me," Ran Ran finally relented.
"Great!" I said happily as I changed my clothes and headed out.
Ran Ran's rental apartment was not far from the school; it took me over twenty minutes on the bus to get there. As soon as I walked in, I saw Ran Ran sitting on the sofa with a notebook, waving at me.
"Come on, come on, let's discuss our strategy."
I picked up the ice cream on the table and took a couple of bites. "How about we use the beauty trap?"
Ran Ran slapped my thigh. "You silly! Ma Tao dumped you and still hates you. He definitely won't fall for that."
"What should we do then?" I swallowed the ice cream and chewed slowly.
Ran Ran rested her chin on her hand, deep in thought. "We need to think this through carefully."
"Then let's create a distraction," Ran Ran suggested. "You should test his attitude towards you first, and then we can make plans."
"Great idea!"
I made up my mind and decided to stake out in the parking lot.
After three days of waiting, I finally spotted him getting off work.
As I walked from the underground parking lot to the elevator, I kept thinking about how to approach him.
Should I just go up and punch him, or pretend to twist my ankle?
