Time passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, three years had gone by. During these three years, my life remained busy, yet deep within my heart, there was always a void. Whenever the night grew quiet, I would think back to that summer, remember Xu Qiang's smile, and cherish the beautiful moments we spent together. His presence felt like a ray of light in my life, illuminating the dark days I once endured. However, his sudden departure plunged me into a deep confusion and longing.
After the college entrance examination, I successfully enrolled in my dream university. Cheng Wu also got into a university in the same city as mine. We would occasionally meet, but our conversations always carefully avoided mentioning Xu Qiang. I wondered if Cheng Wu harbored the same feelings for Xu Qiang as I did. We never spoke of him again, as if he had ceased to exist. Yet I knew that the person who had been by my side that summer would never truly disappear.
University life was fulfilling; I was busy every day. I would go to the library to read, immersing myself in the ocean of knowledge and feeling the power of words; I would eat in the cafeteria, sharing the joy of food with classmates; I would run on the playground, sweating and releasing stress. Sometimes, while walking alone on campus, I would watch students coming and going—some chatting in groups, some strolling hand in hand, and others rushing alone. I always felt something was missing. After much thought, I realized it was someone to walk with me.
After graduation, I started working at a large company. Cheng Wu also found a job in the same city. We often met for meals, shopping, and movies. During those light-hearted moments, I tried hard to immerse myself in them, attempting to erase Xu Qiang from my memory. But sometimes, a sudden thought of him would catch me off guard—his words and actions flooding back like a tide. I began to doubt whether I could truly forget him; yet deep down, I knew he was simply hidden within my heart.
Another autumn arrived; the weather gradually turned cooler, and leaves began to yellow and fall gracefully. One day, as usual, I went to work. Upon entering the conference room, I spotted a familiar figure standing by the window with his back to me. His tall posture and broad shoulders made my heart race and my breath quicken. Was I imagining things? Or was it really him? Cautiously approaching him felt like testing my own emotions with each step. Finally, he turned around. It was him! Xu Qiang! He smiled at me; his eyes were bright and deep like the most dazzling stars in the night sky, seemingly able to see through my soul. For a moment, I forgot how to react.
Xu Qiang reached out and gently caressed my cheek. "Li Wan, long time no see." His voice was soft and familiar, as if it had traveled from a distant past. Coming back to reality, I hurriedly shifted my gaze away. "You... what are you doing here?" I asked somewhat flustered. Xu Qiang smiled again. "I came to find you." I was stunned. He came looking for me? Why? Xu Qiang gazed at me and slowly said, "Li Wan, I like you." His eyes were firm and sincere; there was no way for me to evade his gaze. "Would you be my girlfriend?" My eyes widened in disbelief as I looked at him. He confessed his feelings! Should I accept him? My heart was filled with conflict and struggle. For three years, I had been trying hard to forget him, yet here he was suddenly confessing.
Seeing my hesitation, Xu Qiang added gently: "Li Wan, I know this is sudden for you." His voice brimmed with warmth and understanding. "But I truly like you." He continued earnestly: "I would do anything for you." "Please give me a chance." Looking into his eyes filled with hope and desire made it impossible for me to refuse. Taking a deep breath and summoning my courage at last, I nodded and said: "Okay." Xu Qiang smiled brightly; his joy radiated like sunshine as he embraced me tightly in his arms. His embrace was warm and solid, making me feel incredibly safe. Leaning on his shoulder and inhaling his familiar scent made me realize that these three years felt like they had passed in an instant. That summer—the boy who watched the sunrise with me—had returned.
