The wooden cabin was surrounded, and a murderous aura filled the air. Meng Hao's roar echoed like a trapped beast's cry, as the Heavenly Axe in his hand glimmered with a bronze light, firmly protecting him and Li Yunyan behind him. He could feel the rapid depletion of his strength, but the instinct to protect Li Yunyan kept him steady, unmoving.
"Overestimating yourself!" The leader of the black-clad men sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. He waved his hand, and the assassins surrounding the cabin surged in like a tide, their blades glinting coldly in the twilight as they launched a relentless assault on Meng Hao.
"Die, arrogant fool!" One assassin charged forward first, wielding a long knife that whipped up a fierce blade wind aimed directly at Meng Hao's throat.
Meng Hao suddenly dropped his shoulder, and the Heavenly Axe swung horizontally, producing a piercing screech as it met the attack. The assassin felt an immense force radiate from the blade, numbing his grip and causing him to stumble back, nearly falling.
"Hmph, mere tricks!" Meng Hao spat, twisting the axe and striking back at the assassin's chest. The assassin was taken aback, retreating hastily but still caught by the axe's wind, feeling a sharp pain in his chest.
Li Yunyan's face turned pale as she tightly grasped Meng Hao's clothing, sensing his trembling body. She knew he was nearing his limit; even with the strength of the Heavenly Axe, he couldn't withstand this nearly endless onslaught for much longer. A complex look flashed in her eyes; after struggling for a moment, she whispered to Meng Hao, "Meng Hao, you go first. I'll hold them off!"
"Holding them off? What kind of joke is that?!" Meng Hao snapped his head around, glaring at Li Yunyan. His bloodshot eyes were filled with determination: "I won't let you suffer even a scratch!"
"You... you fool!" Li Yunyan's heart trembled, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She knew Meng Hao was an honest man, but she never expected he would go to such lengths for her.
At that moment, the wall of the cabin was suddenly smashed in with a loud crash as more assassins poured in from all directions, sealing off every escape route. Their weapons shimmered with various colors of light—attacks formed from condensed elemental energy.
"Kid, let's see how long you can hold out!" The leader of the assassins' eyes glinted with malice as he waved his hand sharply. Several sorcerers skilled in elemental attacks stepped forward from the crowd; their hands moved swiftly as flames blazed hotly in the air, icy shards pierced through the atmosphere, and razor-sharp winds sliced through.
"Whoosh!"
A massive fireball surged forward with searing heat aimed directly at Meng Hao's face. Without time to think, Meng Hao instinctively sidestepped while thrusting the Heavenly Axe into the ground. The bronze light instantly transformed into a solid shield enveloping both him and Li Yunyan.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Fireballs, ice spikes, and wind blades rained down upon the shield like a tempest, creating deafening roars with each impact. Although the shield was sturdy, every attack sent a jolt through Meng Hao's body, causing a metallic taste of blood to rise in his throat.
“Meng Hao! You can’t hold on much longer!” Li Yunyan shouted anxiously. She could feel the tremors in Meng Hao’s body growing more intense, and the blood spilling from his mouth stained the corner of her tightly gripped clothing.
“Get away! I’m not dead yet!” Meng Hao roared, knowing he could no longer sit idly by. He suddenly drew the Heavenly Axe and charged forward, the bronze shield solidifying even further, resembling a massive millstone as it rolled toward the assassins.
The assassins were caught off guard by Meng Hao's sudden counterattack. Several of the front-line assassins were directly struck by the shield, sent flying as they spat blood and crashed heavily to the ground.
“What an opportunity!” A glint of determination flashed in Meng Hao’s eyes as he seized the moment. The Heavenly Axe sliced through the air like lightning, aimed directly at one of the top assassins from the Underworld.
The assassin's eyes widened in terror; he hadn’t expected Meng Hao to unleash such a powerful attack in such a critical moment. He hurriedly raised his short blade to block, but the force of the Heavenly Axe far exceeded his expectations.
“Crack!”
With a sharp sound, the short blade shattered under the blow. The Heavenly Axe continued its relentless path, striking directly at the assassin's chest. The assassin let out a muffled groan as his body flew backward like a broken kite, crashing into the wall and spewing blood before dying instantly.
“What… what kind of power is this?” The other assassins were filled with dread; they hadn’t anticipated that an ordinary-looking woodcutter could slay a top assassin from the Underworld with a single blow!
“Die!” Bloodshot eyes filled with fury, Meng Hao understood that at this moment, he had to carve out a bloody path to survive. He swung the Heavenly Axe faster, its bronze glow illuminating him like a war god.
However, just as he prepared to press his advantage, an even more terrifying sense of danger surged from behind him. He turned sharply to see a shadow materializing like a specter behind him, an overwhelming wave of elemental energy crashing toward him like a tsunami.
“Kid, nice reflexes, but… too late!” A cold voice laced with mockery whispered in Meng Hao’s ear.
A chill ran down Meng Hao’s spine as he sensed this power was far greater than any assassin he had faced before. He realized that a true master from the Underworld had finally made their move. He quickly spun around, positioning the Heavenly Axe defensively in front of him as the bronze shield solidified instantly, providing him with steadfast protection.
“Boom!”
A deafening sound echoed as the terrifying five elemental energies crashed against the shield. Meng Hao felt his body jolt violently, a metallic sweetness rising in his throat. The ground beneath him cracked inch by inch, and the entire wooden house began to sway precariously.
“Pfft!”
Meng Hao could no longer hold back, and a mouthful of fresh blood spewed forth. He knew that this time, he truly couldn't endure any longer. His body swayed unsteadily, and the Heavenly Axe in his hand felt heavier than ever.
Just as he was about to collapse, a white figure shot through like lightning, accompanied by a furious shout that exploded in his ears: “You rodents of the Underworld dare to wreak havoc on Kongtong Sect's territory? You seek death!”
“Bang!”
The newcomer wielded a long sword that danced like a dragon emerging from the sea, its sharp sword energy forcing back the expert from the Underworld.
Meng Hao struggled to open his eyes and saw a young man in a white robe standing in front of him, his sword gleaming coldly and radiating an aura of righteousness. This was… a disciple of Kongtong Sect!
“Meng Hao, are you alright?” The young man turned his head, concern etched on his face as he looked at Meng Hao.
Meng Hao weakly shook his head, but a surge of relief washed over him. He knew he had narrowly escaped death.
“Thank you…” Meng Hao began to express his gratitude but suddenly felt darkness engulfing him as his body lurched forward. Just before losing consciousness completely, he vaguely heard the young man's urgent voice: “Senior Brother, hurry and save him!”
