I lifted my head and scanned the faces of everyone present.
"Everyone, I have a piece of news that may change all our fates," I stated directly, cutting straight to the chase.
As soon as my words fell, the atmosphere in the conference room froze.
All eyes were on me, filled with wariness, skepticism, and even a hint of impatience.
"What news? Wei Na, stop being cryptic," grumbled a burly man from the Flame Mercenary Group, clearly uninterested in my "humor."
I ignored his attitude and pulled up the coordinates and information sent by the mysterious girl, projecting it onto the makeshift screen in the center of the room.
"This is an abandoned laboratory. According to the latest intel, it conceals crucial information about the truth behind the 'Soul Devouring' virus." I pointed at the blurry map and several marked points on the screen. "This intel was obtained through a… special channel."
I deliberately obscured the source of the information, knowing full well that mentioning the mysterious girl would only invite unnecessary suspicion.
Sure enough, the information on the screen immediately stirred up unrest.
"An abandoned laboratory? Is this intel reliable?" asked a representative of the survivors, frowning with distrust.
"Yeah, who knows if it's a trap set by the Dark Council?" another mercenary chimed in, his hand instinctively resting on the grip of his gun at his waist.
The atmosphere in the conference room grew tense, thick with doubt and mistrust.
Everyone seemed like a startled bird; any sudden movement would send them leaping into action.
"I believe this intel," Wei Zhong suddenly spoke up. His voice was low but carried an undeniable authority.
Everyone's gaze turned to him once again, their faces filled with shock.
Wei Zhong scanned the crowd and said in a deep voice, "The reason we achieved an unexpected victory in this offensive and defensive battle is that Wei Na predicted the zombies' attack patterns in advance, and..."
He paused, seemingly weighing his words, ultimately opting for a vague expression: "...he demonstrated a certain... special perception ability towards the virus and the zombies."
His words plunged the conference room into deeper silence.
Everyone looked at me with curiosity, their eyes filled with inquiry and a hint of... fear.
"Information Point 3: Wei Na's newly evolved abilities were first showcased during the meeting, drawing the attention of teammates and instantly changing the atmosphere, intertwining worry and anticipation."
I remained silent, quietly feeling the surge of new power within me.
During the awards ceremony, I had deliberately suppressed the changes brought about by my "Soul Devouring Immunity Evolution" ability.
But in that earlier "hilarious offensive and defensive battle," I had devoured a large number of mutated zombies, leading to another evolution of my abilities.
I could clearly sense that my nerve reflex speed, strength, and even my perception of the surrounding environment had significantly improved.
My eyes could even capture those nearly invisible viral particles floating in the air.
Slowly, I raised my hand, palm facing up.
A faint green light began to coalesce in my hand.
The light grew brighter until it formed a green orb the size of a thumb, pulsating in my palm and emanating a wave of energy that was both exhilarating and unsettling.
The tense atmosphere in the conference room was suddenly shattered by Zhong Dali's unexpectedly clumsy behavior.
A few mercenaries couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Wei Zhong shook his head helplessly.
I looked at Zhong Dali's bewildered expression, but deep down, I understood that while his arrival had eased the immediate awkwardness, it also hinted at his understanding of the current situation, which remained superficial.
He had no idea that we were discussing matters of life and death that concerned everyone.
"Zhong Dali, why don't you sit over there for now?" I said, my tone carrying a hint of barely perceptible fatigue.
"Information Point 5: The assassination squad of the Dark Council is quietly approaching the base. Wei Na's instincts compelled him to take action early and issue a warning signal."
At that moment, I suddenly felt a wave of anxiety wash over me.
It was… a chilling sensation of being watched.
My "Light Energy Sensing" ability, while unable to directly detect living beings, could sense those nearly invisible energy fluctuations in the air.
And now, I felt a cold and malevolent energy wave silently closing in on the base.
It was the assassination squad of the Dark Council!
My instincts told me they were coming, and… faster than I had imagined.
I abruptly stood up, my expression changing drastically.
“Wei Na, what do you really know?!” he asked in a low voice.
I turned around, my gaze sweeping over everyone present.
Their faces were etched with shock, confusion, and a hint of… fear.
“Now is not the time for explanations,” my voice became unusually firm. “The assassination squad from the Dark Council has already reached the perimeter of the base. They are coming for us, coming for… the virus information!”
My words plunged the meeting room into silence once more.
Everyone knew the brutality and power of the Dark Council; once they set their sights on someone, almost no one could escape.
“Now, we have two choices,” I said solemnly. “First, believe me and come with me to that abandoned laboratory to uncover the truth behind the ‘Soul Devouring’ virus and find a way to fight back against them.”
I paused, my gaze sweeping over the crowd again, my eyes filled with an undeniable determination.
“Second… is to stay here and wait to be slaughtered by the Dark Council.”
The meeting room was utterly silent.
No one spoke, but the expressions on their faces told me they were engaged in a fierce internal struggle.
Should they trust someone who had suddenly gained strange abilities and acted in an absurd manner? Or should they choose to sit idly by in this besieged base?
The gears of fate began to turn.
