My name is Zhang Minyin, and I am a department head at a cosmetics company.
One evening, shortly after finishing dinner, I received a text message from our Executive Director—let's refer to him as A Man for now. The message read: "An urgent meeting will be held tonight. All department heads are to gather outside the company gate at nine o'clock sharp."
It was unprecedented for the company to hold a meeting outside of working hours since I joined. Given this unusual circumstance, it was clear that tonight's meeting was indeed extremely urgent and imminent.
At eight fifty, I returned to the company. There are more than ten department heads in our company, and I expected that most of them would have arrived by now. However, when I reached the company gate, there was only one person standing there—another department head, whom I will call B Man.
Upon seeing me, he greeted me, "Zhang Minyin."
"Good evening," I replied with a slight smile.
He smiled back, "I'm glad to see you. I thought A Man was playing a prank on me. He clearly said the meeting would start at nine, yet here I am alone."
"You received A Man's text too?" I asked.
"Yes, he told us to gather outside the company gate at nine sharp."
After exchanging a few more words, another colleague arrived—a girl who had recently joined the company and is not a department head. I'll refer to her as C Girl.
"Why are there only two of you?" C Girl looked at her watch and said, "It's already two minutes past nine. Where is everyone else?"
I frowned slightly and asked C Girl, "Did you receive A Man's text as well?"
"Yes," C Girl nodded.
B Man asked, "What did the message say?"
C Girl took out her phone, found the message that A Man had sent her, and read aloud, "An emergency meeting will be held tonight. All employees are to gather outside the company gate at nine o'clock sharp."
"All employees?" Both B Man and I exclaimed in unison.
C Girl scratched her head. "Yes, is there a problem? Didn't you receive the same message?"
B Man and I exchanged a glance and silently agreed to remain quiet.
We waited outside the company gate for over ten minutes, but no other colleagues showed up. The surroundings were eerily silent, almost unsettling.
I glanced at my watch; it was already fifteen minutes past nine. Growing impatient, I said, "Where is A Man? B Man, do you have the company's keys? Should we go inside and wait?"
"I don't have the keys," B Man replied.
"Maybe we should call A Man," C Girl suggested.
"Right." I nodded, took out my phone, and dialed A Man's number. The call connected, but no one answered.
We complained for a bit longer. I said, "We might have been pranked by A Man. Hmph, I'm not waiting anymore; I'm going home."
"Let's wait a little longer," B Man murmured as he glanced at the glass door of the company.
As soon as he finished speaking, the lights inside the company suddenly flickered on.
"Huh?" I frowned. "Why did the lights come on? Is there someone in the company?"
C Girl rubbed her eyes and pointed at the door. "It looks like there's a shadow inside." Following her gaze, B Man and I peered through the glass door to see what was happening. A figure stumbled out of the company, getting closer to the entrance. "It's A Man!" C Girl exclaimed suddenly.
I focused my gaze, and indeed, it was our Executive Director, A Man, rushing toward the door.
His hair was disheveled, and he looked panicked and disheveled.
B Man, C Girl, and I were startled by his appearance and froze for a few seconds before regaining our composure. By the time we snapped back to reality, A Man had reached the front of the company's door, separated from us by just a single barrier. However, since the door was closed at that moment, we couldn't reach him.
A Man was frantically banging on the door, shouting, "Help! Help!" Seeing him in distress shocked us again. I noticed that his feet were injured and bleeding; no wonder he was limping when he ran out.
"What happened?" B Man asked through the glass door.
"Help me! Please open the door!" A Man cried out desperately, his face growing paler by the second. "We don't have a key!" B Man replied.
A Man gasped for breath as he continued to pound on the door, seemingly trying to break it down in a desperate attempt to escape from inside.
