As they stepped out of the field, Su Yu looked quite helpless. After just an hour of playing, his limited edition Manchester United jersey, which he had bought only yesterday, had been torn by Wang Xiaofeng, a freshman from the Business Department. Of course, Wang Xiaofeng hadn’t meant to do it; after all, he was a burly figure and a strong defender on the opposing team.
Feeling guilty, Wang Xiaofeng said, “I’m really sorry. Let me take you to the campus tailor to get your jersey fixed. I’ll pay for it.” The campus tailor was located in the student living area, just a short walk from the boys' dormitory. The owner was a kindly old lady with excellent skills and reasonable prices.
After taking a shower in the dormitory, Su Yu grabbed his damp jersey and went to call Wang Xiaofeng in the Business Department dormitory. They headed downstairs together and arrived outside the tailor shop. Today seemed a bit strange; even though it was already afternoon, the shop appeared to be closed. The roll-up door was pulled halfway down, and the inside was dimly lit with a faint red glow. Su Yu bent down and entered the shop, calling out loudly, “Is anyone here?”
Inside, the ceiling was cluttered with various garments hanging everywhere, and several colorful pieces of fabric obscured Su Yu and Wang Xiaofeng's view. Behind the fabric came a woman’s voice: “Yes, yes! Just a moment please.” As soon as she finished speaking, a beautiful girl in her twenties parted the fabric and appeared before the two boys, holding a large pair of scissors.
“Hey, is Old Lady Zhang not here?” Su Yu asked in surprise. Old Lady Zhang was the owner of the tailor shop.
The girl smiled and replied, “Old Lady Zhang’s daughter is in the hospital having a baby, so she went back home to take care of her. She handed over this shop to me to manage. I just opened this morning.” She handed over a business card and added, “Don’t worry; my skills are just as good as hers, and my prices will remain the same.”
Su Yu glanced at the business card; the new tailor shop owner was named Shen Jia. After handing his torn jersey to Shen Jia, he looked around curiously and noticed that the red glow he had seen earlier came from a shrine on the wall.
Business people often seek divine protection. However, this shrine was not dedicated to typical deities like Zhao Gongming or Guan Yu but rather featured a peculiar Stone Monkey with three eyes and six arms. A small piece of colorful fabric draped over its shoulder had strange, winding characters written on it. Wang Xiaofeng also noticed it and curiously pushed aside the hanging fabric to approach the shrine. He asked inquisitively, “What kind of deity is this monkey?” He reached out to pull off that small piece of fabric.
Suddenly, Shen Jia shouted, “Don’t touch that cloth!” Her eyes widened as she shot him a sharp look. Wang Xiaofeng jumped back in surprise. Realizing her outburst, Shen Jia quickly explained, “This Stone Monkey is a souvenir I bought while traveling in Southeast Asia. Locals say that if you wipe its hands with consecrated cloth every day, it will bless you with prosperous business and endless customers. That piece of fabric is consecrated from a temple in Southeast Asia; please don’t take it away!”
Wang Xiaofeng asked curiously, “What would happen if someone took that cloth?”
Shen Jia glared at him and said sternly, “It would bring misfortune to whoever steals it! Only the owner of that cloth can receive its protection; thieves will be cursed by the Stone Monkey!”
“Are you trying to scare me?” Wang Xiaofeng started to say more when Su Yu quickly interrupted him. He turned to Shen Jia and said, “You must have wiped the Stone Monkey's hands today; no wonder your business is so good! We came here right after you took over the tailor shop to fix our jerseys.”
Shen Jia said irritably, "Alright, just leave the jerseys here and come pick them up tomorrow." Having already issued an eviction notice, Su Yu and Wang Xiaofeng had no choice but to leave the tailor shop in disappointment.
As they stepped outside, a few more students walked into the tailor shop with clothes that needed mending. It seemed that Stone Monkey truly brought good luck to Shen Jia.
