After seeing Lin Yun's body, Wang Xiaofeng lost his appetite and dumped the sweet and sour ribs he had ordered in the cafeteria into the trash can. Of course, Su Yu was no better off; he hadn’t eaten dinner at all. So, around ten o'clock, both of them felt hungry and decided to head to a small restaurant in the living area to find something to eat.
In the small restaurant, after each ordering a bowl of Guizhou lamb noodles, they began discussing Lin Yun's death.
The young police officer's remarks had reached their ears, prompting Wang Xiaofeng to ask, "Su Yu, do you really think Lin Yun committed suicide because of psychological suggestion?"
"I can only say that, theoretically speaking, that explanation cannot be ruled out," Su Yu replied noncommittally as he slurped his noodles.
After finishing his noodles, Su Yu suddenly looked up, rolled his eyes, and said to Wang Xiaofeng, "Actually, there's something I can't figure out."
"What can't you figure out?"
"I don't understand why there was a buildup of detergent in the sink of Lin Yun's dormitory bathroom, and why his phone was soaking in it."
Wang Xiaofeng nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that is a bit puzzling."
Su Yu continued, "Detergent is an organic solvent. If the phone is soaked in it, it will definitely be unusable afterward. Moreover, the SIM card in the phone is most vulnerable to organic solvents; if it comes into contact with detergent, all the information stored on it will be erased."
"But what's the point of erasing the information on the SIM card? Don't forget that even without the SIM card, the telecom company can still print out all call records!" Wang Xiaofeng countered.
Su Yu nodded and said, "Exactly. That's why I can't understand why Lin Yun would soak his phone in the sink before committing suicide." He paused for a moment, a look of confusion on his face as he added, "Could it be that he didn't actually commit suicide? And that soaking the phone in detergent wasn't meant to erase call records but served some other purpose?"
"What purpose?"
"The purpose was to hide the SIM card number in the phone! Perhaps the call to Xu Bei wasn't made by Lin Yun at all, but by his murderer," Su Yu said. "The killer soaked Lin Yun's phone in detergent to prevent the police from discovering the SIM card number. The killer had already removed Lin Yun's SIM card and placed it in their own phone to call Xu Bei, making everyone believe that Lin Yun had died after making the call. By then, the murderer had also prepared an alibi to clear their own suspicion."
"But the beautiful tailor shop owner, Shen Jia, saw a long-haired boy walk into the shop after we left. Could that person not be Lin Yun?"
Su Yu smiled and replied, "Don't forget, the long-haired boy Shen Jia saw was keeping his head down, with his hair covering his face. With just a wig, I could make someone believe I was Lin Yun. It's possible that even the street performer Xu Bei and the others saw yesterday wasn't Lin Yun but rather the killer in disguise. The goal was to have Xu Bei and her friends as temporal witnesses when they discovered Lin Yun's body."
As they stepped out of the small restaurant, it was already late, and there were few people on campus. On their way back to the dormitory, Wang Xiaofeng couldn't help but ask, "Who exactly is this murderer? They are truly cunning and have set up such a complex scheme; it's brilliant."
Su Yu chuckled and said, "I fear this murderer is also a victim of their own cleverness."
"What do you mean by that?"
Su Yu explained, "The murderer is indeed very smart, but they made a crucial mistake—they shouldn't have placed the fabric in Lin Yun's hand."
"Fabric?"
"Yes, by putting the fabric in Lin Yun's hand, the killer created a false trail to divert the police's attention toward the newly opened tailor shop. Even if the curse associated with that fabric is fake, it could lead the police to think of psychological suggestion and mislead them into believing that Lin Yun committed suicide due to a mental breakdown."
"So what is the killer's flaw?" Wang Xiaofeng pressed on.
