“Listen, buddy, how much longer do you plan to drag this out?” Park Chi's voice was filled with frustration. “If you’re going to confess, you need to understand the rules of confession. While we will definitely provide meals here, how can you expect us to be lenient if you’re not honest?”
In stark contrast to Gu Cheng's masculine demeanor, Lu Kai had a fair complexion and a delicate appearance. His slightly yellow hair and a light gray striped CK T-shirt, paired with a carefree expression, made him resemble the Japanese star Domoto Tsuyoshi.
After listening to the earnest advice, Domoto Tsuyoshi glanced at the officer, his gaze vacant before drifting away again.
This was too much for Park Chi, who was already losing his patience. The Female Recorder finally took action: “Where did you put Miss Jiang’s wedding ring?” she asked casually. “In your statement, you mentioned that on the evening of August 17th at 7 PM, you killed Jiang Yufei with cyanide-laced red wine under the agreed bridge and placed her body in a prepared iron box. Since there was no struggle during the process, the missing wedding ring from her left hand must be with you, Mr. Lu.”
The abrupt question finally snapped Lu Kai's dazed attention into focus. “The ring... I didn’t notice if she was wearing it that day. It might have fallen somewhere in the grass while moving the body... Why are you asking this?”
The Female Recorder remained noncommittal: “Just a casual inquiry. Now, let me ask you, Mr. Lu, why did you choose that bridge tunnel to meet the deceased? It’s quite remote; she didn’t bring any communication tools yet still managed to find it. Was it perhaps a place you had visited before?”
“Yeah, that was Jiang Yufei’s private paradise. She loved swamps and wild cattails; whenever she felt down or wanted to escape from the crowd, she would go there. During our college days, we often brought books and food and would sit under that bridge for an entire day. It holds my fondest memories, which is why I decided to end our story there.”
“I see. But why did you kill her?” Park Chi interjected.
“Why should I tell you?” Lu Kai retorted bluntly.
“Because you need to prove that it was indeed you who killed her on the day of the incident,” Yan Xiaoque said calmly. “And Mr. Lu Kai, right now you have not earned our trust.”
“I must tell you something you should have realized by now. For instance, as an incompetent murderer, you've made consecutive errors in your account of the murder process and the time of death. Jiang Yufei was wearing a silk white dress that day; if she really was poisoned by you, how could her ring have been lost in the grass while her body showed no signs of mud? The silk didn’t have a single thread pulled or torn—does that make sense? Furthermore, an autopsy revealed that her actual time of death was not at 7 PM as you stated but rather between 8 PM and 9 PM that night. Although you had motive and expressed willingness to confess, your fingerprints were found on both the Tin Box and the key bottle of poisoned wine—evidence that is quite damning. But I still want to know: if you're so sure about the timing, how could your memory be off by two hours? Considering these discrepancies, the only conclusion we can draw is that your testimony is a lie. So tell us—why are you deceiving us? What are you hiding?”
Sweat trickled down Lu Kai's forehead as he clenched his fists. “Jiang Yufei is indeed someone I harmed. Fine, I’ll tell you everything.”
"Please tell me more," the recorder said as he began to write.
The version of events provided by Lu Kai was astonishing. He claimed that he had arranged to meet Jiang Yufei at the bridge tunnel at 6 PM to settle things once and for all. Jiang arrived before him, while he came right on time with the props he had prepared for this "suicide pact." The items he had meticulously gathered included two white roses, a blue tin box specially purchased from a shipping company to fulfill their wish of "dying together," and a small bottle of red wine laced with cyanide, which he had prepared in advance. Then, Lu Kai took a gamble and grasped the delicate hand of the now-married Jiang Yufei, reminiscing about their past, hoping she would return to him.
"And she once again plunged you into despair?" Yan Xiaoque asked coldly.
Since the word "love" entered the world, endless troubles have followed. When will the lovesick men and women caught in its web realize that they do not need to be an angel for someone who no longer exists?
"Jiang Yufei said she loved him. She claimed to be very happy and asked me to let her go. Ha! She even urged me to try starting a new life without her. She wanted her husband, Gu Cheng, to love her without any worries about the past, and for her family not to be gossiped about." Lu Kai's face appeared to smile, yet it was marred by sorrow. "So what am I? What does our love mean? We once promised eternal loyalty, yet I am still holding on. Why does she say it can just be let go?"
"So in a fit of rage, you killed her?" Yan Xiaoque's eyes darted around. "Wait a minute, if it was a 'forced suicide pact,' then how come you're still alive? Why didn't you go with her?" This audacious remark drew a sharp glare from her partner, causing her to lower her hat and stick out her tongue.
"No! How could I have killed her!" Lu Kai exclaimed, his emotions boiling over as he pounded his fists on the table.
Come on... you admitted it yourself. The two officers exchanged a glance that screamed "breakdown."
"Alright, you didn't kill her. Now please calm down and tell me how she died," Park Chi said, trying to keep his voice steady and patient.
"At that moment, I finally realized my love could never return; she no longer belonged to me. No, she hadn't belonged to me for a long time and would never willingly die with a fool like me. I couldn't accept this reality. I took out the bottle of poison from the box and was about to drink it when Jiang Yufei snatched it away from me. She hugged me from behind, crying and repeatedly saying she was sorry. We stayed like that for a long time until I could no longer bear it and broke free from her embrace."
"You ran away?!" The two officers exchanged bewildered glances.
"Yes. The moment she held me tightly, I suddenly understood that love cannot be forced; I had been too obsessed in the past. So I decided to let go and give her freedom, but at that moment, I found it impossible to voice those thoughts. So I just ran."
"Where have you been?" the Female Recorder threw down her pen.
"I ran into the Phragmites Marsh in the opposite direction. Eventually, I reached the edge of a water channel and couldn't run anymore, so I sat down and cried for a while. When I got tired of crying, I just lay back and stared at the sky. The wind was strong, blowing against me and feeling quite pleasant. I don't know how long it was before I remembered that it was getting late and I needed to take Jiang Yufei home. I planned to talk to her in the car, to clarify that we should live our own lives without any further entanglements. But when I retraced my steps, I found—she had already taken poison and ended her life."
