I couldn't stop him; A Qiang rushed straight into Hou Zuo Qing's house. My partner and I had no choice but to follow.
“Hou Zuo Qing! Get out here!” A Qiang shouted from downstairs.
Hou Zuo Qing leaned out from upstairs, “A Qiang, what are you going crazy about?”
“Going crazy? You’ve taken over Dad’s house, and you ask me what I’m going crazy about?”
“What do you mean I’ve taken over? The property deed is in my name!”
“So just because the deed is in your name, that means the house belongs to you alone?” A Qiang stormed upstairs.
I hurried after him, fearing they might get into a fight. Sure enough, as soon as the two brothers met, they started arguing.
“Hou Zuo Qing, you’ve gone too far!” A Qiang pointed at Hou Zuo Qing’s nose. “That house was bought by Dad with great effort. When it was relocated, it was supposed to be shared among us. Why should you get it all to yourself?”
“All to myself?” Hou Zuo Qing scoffed. “Where were you when the extra area fees were paid? I paid the money, so of course the house is mine!”
“You paid the money? That was money Dad gave you!”
“Where’s your proof? Do you have a receipt? Any witnesses?” A Qiang was left speechless by the question. Indeed, when I gave Hou Zuo Qing the money back then, I hadn’t thought to keep any evidence.
“Hou Zuo Qing,” I interjected to mediate, “you’re brothers; don’t let this small matter ruin your relationship.”
“Dad, don’t try to mediate!” A Qiang turned to me and said, “We need to get that house back; he can’t keep it all for himself!”
“Get it back?” Hou Zuo Qing mocked. “On what grounds? Legally, that house is mine!”
“Legally?” A Qiang’s face turned red with anger. “How can you even mention legality? You’re defrauding Dad of his property!”
“Defrauding? Watch your words!”
“Am I wrong? You and your wife colluded to take Dad’s relocation certificate and put the property deed in your name. What else would you call that if not fraud?”
“A Qiang! Shut up!” Hou Zuo Qing suddenly stood up.
“I won’t shut up! I’m going to clear this up today!”
A Qiang also stood up. “This house must be redistributed! One share for Dad, one for you, and one for me!”
"Dream on!" Hou Zuo Qing pushed A Qiang, saying, "This house is mine, and no one else can have a share!"
"Do you dare push me?" A Qiang pushed back.
The two brothers started to wrestle with each other.
"Stop it! Stop it!" My partner and I tried to intervene from the side, but we couldn't separate them at all.
In the end, it was the neighbors who heard the commotion and came over to pull them apart.
A Qiang pointed at Hou Zuo Qing, trembling with anger, "Hou Zuo Qing, from now on, I have no brother like you!"
"Fine by me! Who cares!" Hou Zuo Qing shot back defiantly.
A Qiang walked to the door but turned back to me and said, "Dad, if you don't get this house back, I'll sever ties with you!" With that, he left without looking back.
Watching my two sons fight like this made my heart ache terribly.
I couldn't help but chase after him, "A Qiang, are you really going to cut ties with your father like this?"
"Dad, it's not that I want to sever ties with you; it's that you're too weak!"
A Qiang's eyes were red. "That house originally belonged to you; why don't you take it back?"
"A Qiang, the property deed is in his name now; how can I take it back?"
"You can sue him!"
"Sue my own son? I can't do that."
A Qiang looked at me and shook his head. "Dad, then I have nothing more to say." With that, he walked away.
I stood on the street, watching my younger son’s retreating figure, feeling a mix of emotions in my heart.
