The next day, Qu Ningyu returned with a vial of potion.
"Toad Spirit, look, this is Zhang Daohang's potion. Just mix the sulfur powder with the water and have her drink it, and she will immediately reveal her true form," Qu Ningyu said, handing the potion to Toad Spirit with a mysterious smile.
"Is it really that magical?" Toad Spirit asked, taking the potion with a hint of skepticism.
"Of course it's true! Zhang Daohang is very famous; his potions are guaranteed to work!" Qu Ningyu assured him confidently.
"Alright, I'll give it a try!" Toad Spirit resolved to uncover Su Wan'er's true identity.
...
That evening, Toad Spirit entered the room holding a cup of water.
Su Wan'er was embroidering under the lamp. Upon seeing Toad Spirit enter, she smiled gently.
"Toad Spirit, what brings you here? Is there something you need?" Su Wan'er asked softly, setting down her embroidery.
"Su Wan'er, I... I brought you a cup of water. Please drink it," Toad Spirit said nervously, avoiding her gaze.
"Thank you, Toad Spirit," Su Wan'er replied as she took the cup and drank it in one go.
Toad Spirit's heart raced as he anxiously watched Su Wan'er, afraid to miss any detail.
"Toad Spirit, what's wrong? You look pale," Su Wan'er noticed something was off after finishing the water and asked with concern.
"I'm... I'm fine," Toad Spirit forced himself to remain calm. "How do you feel? Are you uncomfortable at all?"
“I’m fine, really,” Su Wan'er said with a smile. “Toad Spirit, why are you acting so strange today?”
“N-no reason,” Toad Spirit stammered, feeling increasingly guilty.
Could it be that the potion didn’t work?
Just as Toad Spirit was lost in thought, Su Wan'er suddenly clutched her stomach, her face turning pale.
“What… what’s happening to me?” Su Wan'er groaned in pain, beads of sweat rolling down her forehead.
“Su Wan'er! What’s wrong?” Toad Spirit asked in a panic, his heart filled with dread.
“Toad Spirit… what did you make me drink?” Su Wan'er lifted her head painfully, glaring at Toad Spirit with eyes full of resentment.
“I… I…” Toad Spirit stuttered, unable to find the words as everything was laid bare.
Su Wan'er collapsed to the ground in agony, her body beginning to transform.
Her skin sprouted scales, her eyes turned into cold vertical slits, and her fingers morphed into sharp claws.
“Ah!”
Toad Spirit let out a terrified scream and stumbled backward.
What did he just see?
He was witnessing Su Wan'er transform into a serpent demon!
“Monster! It’s a monster!”
The Toad Spirit shouted in terror as he stumbled out of the room.
"Help! There's a snake demon! A snake demon!"
His screams pierced the stillness of the night.
Hearing the commotion, the neighbors opened their doors and stepped outside.
"What are you shouting about, Toad Spirit? It's the middle of the night; are you trying to keep everyone awake?" one neighbor complained.
"There's a snake demon! A snake demon! Su Wan'er is a snake demon!" Toad Spirit pointed at the Lin family's room, panic evident in his voice.
"What? A snake demon?" The neighbors were taken aback by Toad Spirit's words.
They exchanged glances, unable to believe what they were hearing.
"Toad Spirit, have you been drinking? Su Wan'er is such a good person; how could she possibly be a snake demon?" an older villager said.
"I haven't been drinking! I saw it with my own eyes! She... she turned into a giant snake!" Toad Spirit insisted, his excitement palpable. "If you don't believe me, go see for yourselves!"
After hesitating for a moment, the neighbors decided to investigate.
They followed Toad Spirit cautiously to the Lin family's doorstep.
When they caught sight of the enormous snake demon inside the room, they were utterly terrified.
"Ah! A monster!"
The neighbors let out a collective scream and scattered in all directions.
The Toad Spirit was terrified by the scene before him, his hands and feet feeling unresponsive.
He trembled as he grabbed a hoe from the corner, his once simple face now twisted with fear.
“Mon... monster! It’s really a monster!” The Toad Spirit's voice changed pitch as he shouted in a feigned bravado.
“Everyone, come quick! Su Wan'er is a snake demon! She’s going to eat people!”
The villagers were also stunned by the sight, and after a brief silence, they erupted into terrified screams.
“Oh my goodness! It really is a snake demon!”
“Run! The snake demon is eating people!”
However, some braver villagers picked up their weapons and cautiously surrounded her.
“Demon! I’ll make sure to kill you!” A burly man swung a carrying pole at Su Wan'er.
“Kill her! Eliminate the threat to our village!” The villagers struck down on the fallen Su Wan'er with sticks and clubs.
Su Wan'er curled up in pain, her demonic power suppressed by the potion, leaving her unable to fight back.
These neighbors, who were usually kind-hearted, now seemed crazed and struck without mercy.
“Su Wan'er!” The Toad Spirit raised his hoe, standing at the edge of the crowd, watching Su Wan'er suffer in agony, feeling at a loss.
“Toad Spirit, what are you hesitating for? She’s a monster! She’ll endanger our entire village!” Qu Ningyu's voice rang out from the crowd, laced with urgency and manipulation.
Qu Ningyu looked at Su Wan'er being beaten by the crowd, a smug smirk curling at the corners of her mouth.
"Hmph, Su Wan'er, no matter how powerful you are, you'll still die at my hands!" she thought fiercely to herself.
On the surface, however, she feigned righteous indignation, pointing at Su Wan'er and shouting loudly, "Toad Spirit, have you forgotten how she deceived you? Such a monster deserves to be burned alive!"
Toad Spirit looked at Qu Ningyu, then at the suffering Su Wan'er, gripping the hoe in his hand even tighter.
Su Wan'er struggled to lift her head and gazed at Toad Spirit, her eyes filled with pleading.
"Toad Spirit... are you going to harm me? I am your wife! Though I am a demon, I have never harmed anyone..." Her voice was hoarse.
Toad Spirit's heart jolted. He threw away the hoe and rushed forward to protect Su Wan'er.
"Toad Spirit! Are you crazy? Have you forgotten what she is? She's a monster!" Qu Ningyu grabbed Toad Spirit and shouted sharply.
"Ning Yu is right! Toad Spirit, you must not be deceived by her! She is a demon and must be eliminated!" an old man with a cane said sternly.
"Yes! Eliminate her! Free the people from harm!" The villagers' emotions were reignited, and sticks began to rain down like a storm.
Toad Spirit's gaze turned blank, his mind a void.
