The water in the pool was cool, and I kept swimming, trying to dispel the restlessness in my heart.
"Xu Ke." Zhou Shaojun's voice came from the edge of the pool.
"What are you doing swimming at this hour?"
I didn't turn around, continuing to float.
"It's hot, I can't sleep."
He crouched down, reaching out to pull me up.
"The water's too cold; you’ll catch a cold. Come on, let me help you out."
I suddenly shook off his hand, splashing water everywhere.
"I don't need your help!"
I silently climbed out of the pool, wrapped myself in a towel, and walked past him without stopping.
He followed me, reaching out as if to wrap his arms around my waist.
"Don't touch me," I said coldly, stepping away.
"What’s going on with you these days? You canceled the endorsement event and won’t answer my calls." He frowned, a flicker of displeasure in his eyes.
"I'm not feeling well lately."
"The brand event next week is a must-attend; it's crucial for the cooperation between our two families!"
Zhou Shaojun grabbed my wrist.
I let out a cold laugh and turned away.
"Crucial? Crucial for whom?!"
I recalled his intimacy with Chen Jiayi on the dance floor, and how he had called me a nouveau riche in the lounge.
"I doubt a nouveau riche like me could ever be worthy of someone like you, Young Master," I said sarcastically.
"Why not pursue Miss Chen instead? You two are more suited for each other."
Zhou Shaojun's expression changed instantly. "Who told you that?"
"I heard it with my own ears," I replied, meeting his gaze.
"Outside the lounge at the cocktail party, I overheard your conversation with Dong Chao and the others."
Zhou Shaojun fell silent for a moment.
"That was just a joke among friends."
"The union of our families is important; we are well-suited. Chen Jiayi is merely a business partner."
"Well-suited? Yes, I am just a stepping stone for you to enter the capital circle!"
I felt my emotions teetering on the edge of collapse.
I took off the engagement ring and threw it at him.
"Keep your ring; don't waste it on a nouveau riche."
"Ke Ke, let me explain..."
At that moment, Zhou Shaojun's phone rang.
He hurriedly answered, his expression growing increasingly grim.
"What? The funds have been cut off? Who approved that?" he asked anxiously.
"I'll head back right away."
After hanging up, he stared at me.
"Did your father withdraw the investment?"
"Maybe," I scoffed. "After all, the money of a nouveau riche lacks taste."
"Xu Ke, don't be impulsive." He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
"We can talk about this."
"There's nothing to discuss." I turned and walked toward the bathroom.
"Please leave."
Hearing the sound of the door closing, I finally let out a sigh of relief.
The phone screen lit up, buzzing with a notification from social media.
I opened it to find that Chen Jiayi had tagged me.
"My boyfriend's heartfelt gift ♥ Thank you, darling! I absolutely love this 'beloved' piece!"
The accompanying image was of a limited edition Cartier necklace.
It was the very one I had wanted for Zhou Shaojun's birthday last month, but he had refused to buy it for me, claiming it was "too expensive."
The comments were filled with blessings.
How ironic.
I tossed my phone onto the sofa.
I stood up and walked into the closet.
I began clearing out all the things Zhou Shaojun had given me.
Bags, shoes, jewelry, perfume...
I threw them forcefully into a garbage bag to avoid the irritation they caused me.
Then I picked up my phone to email my advisor in the United States, confirming my enrollment for next week.
During my free time, I messaged Mu Mu.
"I've already booked my flight. I'm leaving the day after tomorrow."
"I'll come over to help you pack. Are you sure you don't want to tell Zhou Shaojun?"
"No need. My dad has already pulled out of the Zhou family's overseas project. He'll find out."
On the day of my departure, I refused to let Mu Mu see me off and went to the airport alone.
The VIP lounge at the airport was spacious and quiet. I sat in a corner waiting for check-in.
At that moment, Zhou Shaojun walked into the lounge alongside Chen Jiayi, their heads leaning together in a familiar manner.
Zhou Shaojun even kindly took her luggage for her.
"The funding for that Xu Family project is crucial," I heard Chen Jiayi's voice clearly.
"You have to deal with Xu Ke; otherwise, there will be no overseas investment."
My gaze met Zhou Shaojun's in the air, and he seemed taken aback.
He hurriedly left Chen Jiayi and strode toward the restroom.
A moment later, an unfamiliar number called me.
"Xu Ke, don't be willful," Zhou Shaojun's voice was cold.
"Your father withdrawing his investment is a fatal blow to the Zhou family. You know what I will do."
"What do you mean?"
"I have evidence of the Xu family's shady dealings over the years. If you dare to leave, I will expose it."
I pressed the recording button. "Are you threatening me?"
"I'm just reminding you not to ruin your future. Come back and continue your endorsement."
"Zhou Shaojun, I'm keeping this recording. If you make a move, I'll make it public."
I hung up and immediately blocked him.
Before boarding, I saw Zhou Shaojun and Chen Jiayi hurriedly leaving.
Chen Jiayi was clearly complaining about something, while Zhou Shaojun's face was ashen.
We headed toward different boarding gates.
Just as we were walking toward different futures.
