On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Zhou Shaojun and Zhou Mu came to pay their respects.
Zhou Shaojun's suit was clearly no longer custom-made, and he had dark circles under his eyes.
Shang Mu had swapped her jewelry for something more ordinary, which stood in stark contrast to our family's luxurious mansion.
"The Zhou family is selling off assets to pay their debts," I overheard my parents' friends whispering.
"Zhou Shaojun has been looking for jobs everywhere, but he's been rejected each time due to issues with his credibility."
My phone buzzed with a notification from a marketing account featuring a photo of Chen Jiayi on a date with some nouveau riche tycoon.
The caption read, "True love never waits for the fallen."
At the same time, Mu Mu sent a screenshot from our group chat.
Those socialites who once looked down on me were now frantically sharing reviews of "Timeless."
"Sisters, Xu Ke's brand is simply amazing! A source of pride for our country!"
"Looking for a purchasing agent! I'll pay double the original price!"
"This group of people changes their faces faster than they turn pages," Mu Mu complained.
A video call from Wang Jiayan came through, and I answered it.
"My dear, the preparations for Milan Fashion Week are all complete," he said excitedly.
"By the way, I have a surprise for you that you can only see when you come back."
Zhou Shaojun, who was listening to our conversation, unconsciously rubbed his sleeve with his fingers.
"Let me show you our new design draft," Wang Jiayan shared her screen.
It displayed the latest series that incorporated traditional Chinese elements.
"It's beautiful!" I exclaimed, completely immersed in the work discussion.
"Shao Jun used to like design too," Shang Mu suddenly interjected.
"He won first place in a design competition during college!"
Zhou Shaojun cleared his throat, stopping her from boasting, and the atmosphere became awkward for a moment.
"Wang Jiayan, here are my parents," I turned the camera.
"And here are relatives from the Zhou family, an old acquaintance, Zhou Shaojun."
"Hello," Wang Jiayan greeted politely, her gaze firm and confident.
Zhou Shaojun forced a nod in response, stood up, and found an excuse to leave the living room.
As he said goodbye, Zhou Shaojun paused at the door and glanced back at me.
"I wish it had been me who cherished you back then," he said softly, his tone filled with endless regret.
I didn't respond and returned to my room to continue the video call with Wang Jiayan.
"What do you feel seeing your ex-fiancé?" Wang Jiayan asked with concern.
"Not much," I replied, leaning against the window and watching the Zhou family leave.
"Oh, enough about him. I've missed you!"
The Milan Fashion Week stage was dazzling.
Under the spotlight, the models of "Timeless" took turns strutting down the runway.
The audience erupted in applause, and international media raised their cameras.
"This is a revolution in Eastern aesthetics!" an excited fashion critic exclaimed from the front row.
As the show concluded, the audience stood up to applaud, and Wang Jiayan took my hand for a bow.
Then he suddenly knelt on one knee, causing gasps throughout the crowd.
"Xu Ke, your talent and courage have changed my life."
He pulled out a ring. "Will you marry me?"
Tears streamed down my face as I nodded in acceptance.
Our kiss was captured in photos that were eagerly reported by major fashion media outlets.
The socialite circles back home were filled with astonishment.
“Zhou Shaojun is here again,” the assistant whispered.
“He brought a large bouquet of roses and jewelry, but the security stopped him outside.”
This was already the third time he had appeared at my brand event.
Each time, he came with expensive gifts, and each time, he was turned away.
“This is too much,” Wang Jiayan frowned. “Should we call the police?”
“I’ll handle it,” I reassured him.
I arranged to meet Zhou Shaojun at a nearby café.
He arrived early, his suit sharp but failing to hide his weariness.
“Xu Ke, thank you for agreeing to meet me,” he said eagerly.
“I’ll be straightforward,” I replied as I took a seat across from him.
“Please do not show up at my events anymore.”
“I know I was wrong,” Zhou Shaojun said, lowering his head.
“It was foolish of me back then to use you to get close to the capital circle. I thought family background was everything.”
Tears slid down his cheeks.
“It wasn’t until I lost everything that I realized how precious you are,” he choked out.
"It is I who have let you down."
I handed him a tissue and calmly listened as he spoke.
"Zhou Shaojun, you only thought of me after losing everything. This is not love," I said, looking directly into his eyes.
"No, I am sincere!" He suddenly knelt on one knee.
"Xu Ke, can you forgive me? I am willing to start over. I don't care about your achievements; I just want to make amends for the past."
Around us, guests turned their heads and whispered among themselves.
"True love is not a lifeline when you have nothing."
"It is a treasure that can still be seen when you have everything."
"Let us forget each other from now on; let's not meet again."
I turned and walked away, heading towards Wang Jiayan, who was waiting outside the door.
