"Right!" Zou Xingjing suddenly said, "There’s something very strange at the crime scene!"
Song Nian turned to Zou Xingjing, "What’s so strange?"
"Hey! Don’t look at me, focus on driving!" Zou Xingjing said nervously.
"It’s fine," Song Nian replied with a smile. "I saw that there wasn’t a single car within a few hundred meters ahead, so I turned to talk to you."
"But you ran a red light."
"…"
"Hmph!" Zou Xingjing raised her voice slightly, "You ran the red light, so the fine is yours, and the points will be deducted from your license."
Song Nian chuckled, "The fine is fine by me, but they can’t deduct points from my license."
"Why not?"
"Because," Song Nian flashed that slightly mischievous smile again, "I don’t have a driver’s license."
"What?" Zou Xingjing exclaimed loudly, "So you’re driving without a license? That’s illegal! Get out of the car! Let me drive!"
"We're almost there. Just tell me, what’s the strange thing?"
"Hmph!" Zou Xingjing took a slight breath before saying, "The strange thing is: above Shen Zhi's corpse, there was a dead black cat. It was a cat missing all four limbs, just the head, body, and tail of a black cat!"
"What?" Song Nian thought he misheard. "You mean there was a dead black cat?"
"Yes."
"And that black cat was missing its limbs?"
"Mm."
Song Nian furrowed his brows and muttered to himself, "That black cat's body must have been left by the murderer, right? But why would the murderer do that? What does it mean to cut off the cat's limbs?"
"I can't make sense of it either, which is why I find it strange." Zou Xingjing suddenly changed the subject, "Hey, have we arrived yet? You're driving without a license!"
"Alright! We're here now!" Song Nian replied, stopping the car. He looked through the windshield, gazing at the towering building ahead as he said, "Wang Jian's home is right up there."
"Let's hurry up," Zou Xingjing urged.
Just as they got out of the car, Zou Xingjing's phone rang. He took it out and saw that it was a colleague who had been investigating Shen Zhi's murder with him earlier.
"This is Zou Qixia, go ahead," Zou Xingjing answered the call.
"Zou Xingjing, the test results for the black lighter found at the scene are in. There are indeed fingerprints of Wang Jian on it. In addition to that, there are several other sets of fingerprints on the lighter. We are currently cross-referencing those with the fingerprint database."
"Okay, thanks for your hard work." Zou Xingjing thought for a moment and added, "Could you send me a photo of Wang Jian via MMS?"
"Sure!"
After hanging up the phone, Zou Xingjing smirked, a confident expression spreading across his face.
"What’s going on?" Song Nian asked.
"There are indeed fingerprints of Wang Jian on the lighter."
"Oh?"
At that moment, Zou Xingjing's phone received a multimedia message from a colleague containing a photo of Wang Jian. Zou Xingjing opened the message and asked Song Nian, "Take a look, is this the person?"
"Yes, that's him. He is Wang Jian. I've seen him a few times, I wouldn't mistake him."
"We have a motive and evidence; it seems very likely that this Wang Jian is the culprit. Let's hurry up and arrest him," Zou Xingjing said eagerly.
"Not necessarily."
"What?"
"I mean, your judgment is a bit hasty. Wang Jian may not be the murderer."
"Why do you say that?" Zou Xingjing's expression was somewhat dismissive.
"Because in detective novels, the more someone resembles the killer, the less likely they actually are to be one," Song Nian said seriously.
Zou Xingjing scoffed lightly, "Young man, you've read too many detective novels. Real-life criminals aren't that clever."
"I have other reasons for thinking this."
"Hmm?"
Song Nian cleared his throat and analyzed, "First, you mentioned that there were no fingerprints or hair left at the scene, which indicates that the murderer was very careful and left no evidence behind. Would such a cautious killer accidentally leave behind such an important clue as a lighter? Second, what does it mean for the murderer to place a dismembered black cat's corpse on Shen Zhi's body? Even if we identify Wang Jian as a suspect, as long as we don't understand the significance of the black cat's corpse being at the scene, we haven't truly unraveled all the mysteries!"
“……”
“What's wrong? Do you disagree?”
“Young man,” as they walked and talked, Zou Xingjing suddenly slowed his pace, looked at Song Nian, took a deep breath, and said with some feeling, “Your mind is quite agile. With your assistance, I might really be able to speed up the investigation.”
“Hehe,” Song Nian felt a bit shy at Zou Xingjing's praise. “Compared to him, I'm still far behind. If he were here, who knows, he might have already solved the case completely.”
“He?”
“Yeah. I really can't figure out how his brain works, how he thinks. Clearly, we all have the same clues, but he can come up with many conclusions that I never even thought of.”
“Who is he?” Zou Xingjing asked curiously.
“He's a friend of mine. In fact, I've only met him once. Last month, our Reasoning Research Association members went on a trip to Luoyan Island outside L City, and a murder occurred on the island. He was the one who solved the case…”
“Oh, I know who you're talking about!” Zou Xingjing exclaimed loudly. “You mean Murong…”
Before he could finish his sentence, Song Nian interrupted him: “We're here! This is Wang Jian's home!”
