"Mm." Zou Xingjing nodded and pressed the doorbell.
A few minutes later, a man in his late twenties, unkempt and disheveled, opened the door. As soon as Zou Xingjing and Song Nian saw his face, they recognized him: he was Wang Jian.
"Who are you looking for?" Wang Jian asked, eyeing them warily.
Zou Xingjing displayed her police badge. "Hello, I am Detective Zou Qixia from the City Criminal Police Team. Are you Wang Jian?"
Upon hearing that they were police officers, a flicker of panic crossed Wang Jian's face. However, he quickly composed himself and replied, "Yes, that's me. What do you want?"
"Please open the door and let us in."
"Oh." Wang Jian opened the door wide.
As Zou Xingjing and Song Nian stepped inside, they quickly scanned the room. It was a mess; in the center of the living room stood a mahjong table piled high with tiles and chips. The floor around the table was littered with empty beer bottles, and on the sofa next to the mahjong table lay a man, shirtless and sound asleep.
"What do you two detectives want with me?" Wang Jian asked impatiently.
Zou Xingjing pulled out photos of the Shen sisters. "Do you recognize the people in these photos?"
Wang Jian took the photos and examined them closely, deliberately feigning deep thought. After several seconds, he said, "I recognize them. This is my ex-girlfriend Shen Zhi, and the other one is Shen Zhi's deceased sister."
Zou Xingjing watched Wang Jian's expression closely as she spoke slowly and deliberately: "Shen Zhi was murdered early this morning!"
"What? Zhi Zhi is dead? How could this happen? Wuwu..." As Zou Xingjing's words fell, Wang Jian was the first to show a look of surprise, followed by an expression of sorrow. However, his performance was overly exaggerated and felt unnatural, making it obvious that he was acting.
Zou Xingjing and Song Nian were both exceptionally intelligent individuals. Upon seeing Wang Jian's demeanor, they immediately sensed something was off. They exchanged a quick glance, silently communicating their suspicions.
"Wuwu... Zhi Zhi... why were you so cruel to leave me behind? Wuwu..." Wang Jian put on a heartbroken facade, yet not a single tear fell from his eyes.
"Enough!" Zou Xingjing interrupted Wang Jian's display of "genuine emotion."
"Huh?" Wang Jian feigned a sob, then looked up at Zou Xingjing.
"Wang Jian, we suspect you are involved in the murder case of Shen Zhi. Please come with me to the police station to assist with the investigation," Zou Xingjing stated directly.
"What?" Wang Jian exclaimed like a pig being slaughtered.
"We found a lighter at the crime scene. After examination, we discovered your fingerprints on it," Zou Xingjing declared loudly.
"What lighter?" Wang Jian scratched his head in confusion.
"This one," Song Nian pulled out a black lighter from his pocket. "This lighter has the letters MFC on it. Over a month ago, I saw you using this lighter at the fast-food restaurant downstairs from my house. Now, it has been found at the crime scene with your fingerprints on it. What do you have to say about that?"
Zou Xingjing wore a puzzled expression, thinking to himself: Wasn't the lighter taken back for examination? How could it be in Song Nian's hands?
Wang Jian's expression changed slightly, but he quickly regained his composure. He said loudly, "This lighter is mine, but I lost it not long ago. I don't even know where I lost it. It must have been the murderer who stole my lighter and deliberately placed it at the crime scene to frame me!"
"Let's discuss this back at the police station!" Zou Xingjing said sharply, staring at Wang Jian.
"Wait a minute! I have an alibi! When Shen Zhi was killed, I was playing mahjong with friends. They are still at my house; you can ask them if you don't believe me!" Wang Jian said confidently.
"How do you know when Shen Zhi was killed?" Song Nian asked.
"Huh? I... Oh, right!" Wang Jian suddenly thought of how to respond and smiled, "Didn't you just say that Shen Zhi was murdered early this morning? I was here playing mahjong from eleven last night until seven this morning. Hey, Da Min, wake up!"
At this point, Wang Jian turned to the man sleeping on the sofa and said, "Get up and also call those two out from the room! You all need to testify that I've been here with you from last night until this morning without leaving."
Before long, three men walked out from Wang Jian's house. They could all confirm that Wang Jian had been with them at the mahjong table from just after eleven last night until seven this morning without stepping away.
"Did he really stay at the mahjong table with you the whole time?" Song Nian asked.
