One of the men replied, "It seems he went to the bathroom a few times, but always came back within three minutes."
Another man said, "Officer, we weren't gambling; we were just playing around." After saying this, he seemed to feel that he hadn't shifted enough responsibility and added, "It was Wang Jian who called us up here."
The third man spoke up, "That's right. Actually, around one o'clock, everyone was really tired. I suggested we call it a night, and everyone agreed except for Wang Jian, who insisted we stay and play until dawn."
"Enough!" Wang Jian shouted. "Why are you all talking so much? The fact is, from eleven last night until seven this morning, I was with you all—it's an undeniable truth!"
After saying this, he turned to glance at Zou Xingjing and Song Nian with a hint of arrogance and said, "Did you hear that? I have a complete alibi! From here to Shen Zhi's house, even by car, it takes at least an hour. I was right here when she was killed; I never left! There's no way I could be the murderer! Now can I go home? Please hurry up and find the real killer so I can see who is so despicable as to leave my lighter at the crime scene to frame me!"
Once home, the two walked down the stairs in silence. As they reached the bottom of the stairs, they exchanged glances and simultaneously said, "Wang Jian has a problem!"
Their words almost overlapped, causing them both to pause slightly before bursting into laughter.
Zou Xingjing analyzed, "Regardless of whether he is the actual culprit or not, he must have known about Shen Zhi's murder before we arrived here."
"That's true. He even knew Shen Zhi would be killed before it happened," Song Nian said, lightly furrowing his sharp eyebrows. "Playing mahjong at Wang Jian's house was his suggestion; when his friends wanted to leave at one in the morning, he wouldn't let them go and insisted on staying with them until seven. All these signs indicate that Wang Jian was deliberately creating an alibi for himself."
"He must have known Shen Zhi would be killed during that time frame and crafted an unbreakable alibi for himself," Zou Xingjing clenched his teeth. "So that means Wang Jian isn't the murderer."
"Not necessarily," Song Nian replied.
"How so?" Zou Xingjing asked curiously.
"The first possibility is that Wang Jian's three friends are lying. Wang Jian was not with them between two and three o'clock this morning. However, based on the confident demeanor Wang Jian displayed earlier, this possibility seems unlikely."
"What about the second possibility?" Zou Xingjing pressed.
"The second possibility is that it wasn't Wang Jian who went to Shen Zhi's house and killed him, but rather Shen Zhi came to Wang Jian's house and was killed by him. What I mean is that Shen Zhi had already been captured by Wang Jian and hidden in the bathroom of Wang Jian's house. During the time frame of two to three o'clock this morning, Wang Jian left the living room, went to the bathroom, killed Shen Zhi, and then returned to the living room within three minutes to appear in front of his friends. Therefore, Shen Zhi's time of death would be between two and three o'clock, while Wang Jian never left the house. Afterward, Wang Jian moved Shen Zhi's body to Shen Zhi's house, making the police believe that was the actual crime scene, thus providing him with an alibi." Song Nian articulated his other theory in one breath.
