Zou Xingjing and Song Nian both swallowed hard, feeling an involuntary tension rise within them.
They never imagined that the video, which played a crucial role in this series of murders but had been deleted, could be restored!
Song Nian stared blankly for several seconds before regaining his composure and asking gravely, “Zhang Qing, do you mean to say that you’ve already figured out the content of that video?”
“Yes,” Zhang Qing replied, multitasking as he rapidly typed on his laptop while answering Song Nian.
“Then, does that mean you already know the identity of the murderer behind these serial killings?” Zou Xingjing took a deep breath.
“Yes,” Zhang Qing continued to focus intently on the laptop screen, not looking at Zou Xingjing or Song Nian.
“Ah?” Both of them involuntarily gasped.
Zhang Qing went on: “Everything about these murders is clear as day; there’s no mystery left.”
Song Nian asked, “So, who is the killer?”
While concentrating on his laptop, Zhang Qing analyzed in a flat tone devoid of any emotion: “Let’s start from the beginning: The case began with Shen Zhi being murdered. Her body was found with the head, body, and tail of a black cat placed on it. There was clear evidence indicating that Wang Jian had the motive to kill Shen Zhi; however, Wang Jian had an alibi. Next, Wang Jian was killed, and his body was found with the left front paw of a black cat placed on it. There was clear evidence pointing to Xiao Wanshan as having the motive to kill Wang Jian; yet Xiao Wanshan also had an alibi. Then came Xiao Wanshan’s murder; near her body, a laptop displayed an image of the right front paw of a black cat. The notebook contained clear evidence suggesting Yang Yanrong had the motive to kill Xiao Wanshan. Whether Yang Yanrong had an alibi has yet to be investigated by the police, but that no longer matters because shortly after, Yang Yanrong was killed. At the crime scene, a package containing the left hind paw of a black cat was found, with clear evidence indicating that Sun Zhen had the motive to kill Yang Yanrong. This summarizes the current situation regarding this series of murders.”
Zou Xingjing and Song Nian nodded in agreement. Zhang Qing continued his analysis without glancing at them: “Based on the murderer’s pattern, the next victim will likely be Sun Zhen. At Sun Zhen’s murder scene, there will be clear evidence pointing to someone with a motive to kill him. Can you guess who that person might be?”
“We are already investigating Sun Zhen’s social circle,” Zou Xingjing replied. “But we haven’t found anything yet.”
"I don't need to investigate any further; I already know who that person is," Zhang Qing said calmly.
"What?" Zou Xingjing exclaimed, her mouth agape.
"Did you find out that Sun Zhen had a girlfriend before, and they broke up?" Zhang Qing asked.
"Yes!" Zou Xingjing raised her voice. "My colleagues did uncover that Sun Zhen's love life is quite chaotic. He just broke up with a girl not long ago, but due to the short investigation time, we haven't been able to find out her name yet."
Zhang Qing continued, "After being abandoned by Sun Zhen, that girl was in great pain and eventually committed suicide."
"Ah?" Song Nian gasped.
Zou Xingjing then asked, "Zhang Qing, how do you know all this?"
"You told me," Zhang Qing replied.
"We?" Zou Xingjing looked puzzled.
Zhang Qing said, "That girl is Shen Zhi's sister."
"Ah—" Zou Xingjing and Song Nian exclaimed in unison.
Zhang Qing went on, "Sun Zhen toyed with Shen Zhi's sister's feelings and then abandoned her. Shen Zhi's sister was heartbroken and ultimately chose to take her own life. Shen Zhi despises Sun Zhen for causing his sister's death. Therefore, the one who has the motive to kill Sun Zhen is Shen Zhi!"
"With this, everything becomes clear, doesn't it? Shen Zhi hates Sun Zhen because he caused his sister's death; Wang Jian hates Shen Zhi because she dumped him; Xiao Wanshan hates Wang Jian because he swindled his grandfather's money, leading to his grandfather's death; Yang Yanrong hates Xiao Wanshan because she stole her boyfriend; and Sun Zhen hates Yang Yanrong because she got him fired. Their web of relationships is now laid out before us in stark clarity.
"Now let's assume that Sun Zhen has been killed. Once Sun Zhen is dead, this series of murders comes to an end. But who is the murderer? Who killed these five people, all of whom are intricately connected? What is their motive? If we continue to investigate in this direction, we will never find the killer."
"Never find the killer?" Zou Xingjing interrupted Zhang Qing, puzzled. "What do you mean? Is the culprit really that cunning?"
"There is no 'culprit' as you describe!" Zhang Qing declared firmly.
"Huh?" Zou Xingjing gasped softly, struggling to comprehend Zhang Qing's words.
Song Nian's mind was racing, and he quickly asked, "So there’s no culprit at all? Then how did these five people die?"
"Perhaps it should be said this way," Zhang Qing added. "There is someone manipulating everything from behind the scenes, but that person has never killed anyone."
"Then how did these five people actually die?" Song Nian pressed on.
"Just like in a food chain."
