The face that resembled Zhang Guodong's, under the dim light of the warehouse, exuded an indescribable sense of eeriness.
My heart raced, almost leaping out of my throat!
“Ghost… it’s a ghost!” I screamed in panic, instinctively shrinking back, nearly toppling off my chair.
The two police officers at the door immediately pressed down on my shoulders with caution.
“Calm down, Wang Lei,” the man who looked like Zhang Guodong spoke up. His voice was entirely different—much younger, with a hint of fatigue and hoarseness. “I’m not a ghost, nor am I Zhang Guodong.”
He stepped closer, the light clearly illuminating his features.
Upon closer inspection, although his facial contours were strikingly similar, his aura was completely different. Zhang Guodong (from the photos) exuded an air of dignified privilege, while the man before me bore the marks of hardship and a tense sharpness in his expression.
“I am Zhang Zhenbang,” he said, meeting my terrified gaze with a serious tone. “Zhang Guodong is my twin brother.”
Twin brothers?
The immense shock left me momentarily speechless.
Zhang Zhenbang didn’t give me much time to process this. He turned his gaze to Captain Chen. “Captain Chen, time is of the essence.”
Captain Chen nodded, his expression grave. “The person is here; it’s temporarily safe. Zhenbang, you mentioned you have crucial leads?”
Zhang Zhenbang pulled out a thin, seemingly ordinary black USB drive from his pocket.
His eyes were filled with pain and deep-seated hatred.
“This is what my brother desperately transmitted before he died,” he said, his voice suppressing sorrow and anger. “Inside are the pieces of evidence he collected over the years about the organization behind ‘Viper’! And…”
He took a deep breath and spoke each word slowly:
“A potential ‘Mole’ List that may have infiltrated the police department!”
The term “Mole List” struck like thunder, echoing in the empty warehouse!
Captain Chen's expression changed dramatically, his gaze instantly sharp as a knife, fixated on the small USB drive.
I gasped in shock; there really was a traitor in the police department! Zhang Zhenbang's words confirmed the terrifying warnings from the Viper safe house!
Zhang Zhenbang handed the USB drive to Captain Chen. “Captain Chen, my brother only trusts you. He said that if anything happened to him, it could only be entrusted to you, and it must be quick! The Viper and the people behind him will stop at nothing to destroy it!”
Captain Chen took the USB drive, his fingers turning slightly white from the grip, as if he were holding an immense burden.
“How did your brother… die?” Captain Chen's voice was low and hoarse.
“Gunshot, close range, right between the eyes,” Zhang Zhenbang replied coldly, filled with deep-seated hatred. “It was disguised as a burglary, but the execution was clean and efficient—done by a professional hitman. The scene had been cleaned up, leaving almost no traces behind, except…” He paused and looked at me. “…except for that gun. My brother might have intentionally left it behind at the last moment.”
Suddenly, I understood!
Zhang Guodong knew he couldn't escape his fate and deliberately arranged for the murder weapon—the gun—to be “delivered” through some means (perhaps by that mysterious woman) to the police’s attention!
Where was it sent? Right under the noses of the police! To someone inconspicuous like a delivery person who could still attract their notice!
I am the chosen "Courier"!
A chill swept over me once again. What I was caught up in was nothing more than a meticulously designed trap, using lives as bait!
“Is the List... reliable?” Captain Chen asked the most critical question.
Zhang Zhenbang's expression was complex. “My brother is very cautious. The List is encrypted; he set up dual verification. One part is biometric (his iris, which can no longer be obtained), and the other... is a key only he knows, linked to a specific item he last interacted with before his death.”
He looked at me, his gaze scrutinizing. “Wang Lei, that gun... the one hidden in the congee, besides the gun itself, is there anything special at the bottom of the Gun Grip? For instance, a tiny groove or mark?”
The bottom of the Gun Grip?
I strained to recall that brief and terrifying moment when I discovered the gun.
The cold touch... the dark metal... I seemed to... indeed have felt something at the bottom of the Gun Grip in my panic—a very subtle, irregular indentation?
“I think... there might be a small pit? Or a scratch? It’s very shallow…” I struggled to describe my vague impression. “I was too scared at the time to look closely…”
“That’s it!” A glimmer of hope flashed in Zhang Zhenbang's eyes. “That groove isn’t a flaw! It’s a manually engraved positioning mark! The key is hidden within some part of the gun and needs to be read in conjunction with that mark's location!”
Captain Chen's expression turned serious. “The gun is currently in the Evidence Room, under strict protection, but…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, but the implication was clear—there might be an insider at the police station! The Evidence Room wasn’t absolutely safe!
Moreover, even if we got hold of the gun, how could Zhang Zhenbang read that key, which only his brother knew how to operate, without alerting anyone?
It was almost an impossible task!
At that moment, a faint "crack" echoed from the ceiling of the warehouse!
It sounded like... the groan of metal fatigue?
The noise was soft, but in the tense silence, it rang out clearly!
Captain Chen and Zhang Zhenbang's expressions changed simultaneously!
"Hide!" Captain Chen shouted, suddenly throwing me to the ground!
The two police officers at the door instantly drew their guns, searching for cover!
Almost in the same instant!
"Bang!"
A dull explosion reverberated!
A seemingly inconspicuous vent cover on the warehouse ceiling suddenly blew apart!
A fist-sized black object, surrounded by acrid smoke, spiraled downwards!
A stun grenade!
"Close your eyes! Cover your ears!" Captain Chen roared in my ear!
Everything happened in the blink of an eye!
Instinctively, I shut my eyes tightly, covered my ears, and curled up my body!
“Boom—!!!”
An indescribable deafening roar and a blinding light that could tear through retinas instantly engulfed the entire warehouse!
Even with my ears tightly covered, that terrifying sound crashed into my skull like a heavy hammer!
The intense light pierced through my eyelids, leaving everything before me drenched in blood red!
A violent ringing in my ears and a wave of dizziness made the world spin around me, and I felt nauseous!
The shockwave slammed my body hard against the ground!
In the chaos, I heard several short bursts of gunfire! Along with the muffled thud of something heavy hitting the floor!
Who was it? The police? Or the attackers?
A few seconds felt as long as a century.
As the effects of the stun grenade began to wane, I struggled to open my eyes. My vision was a blur, and all I could hear was a sharp buzzing in my ears.
Thick smoke filled the air.
In my blurred vision, I saw a police officer lying on the ground at the entrance, his life unknown.
Captain Chen struggled to half-kneel, shaking his head in an attempt to regain consciousness. He raised his gun toward the gaping hole in the ceiling!
Where was Zhang Zhenbang?
I turned my head with great difficulty to search for him.
I spotted Zhang Zhenbang lying not far from me, seemingly dazed by the shockwave.
The black USB drive containing the Deadly List was slipping from his loosened grip, falling onto the dust-covered concrete floor!
What made my heart stop was—
A foot clad in a black combat boot silently stepped beside the USB drive!
A figure shrouded in a black Tactical Suit, wearing a skull mask, descended from the gaping hole in the ceiling like a ghost!
In his hand, the dark muzzle of a gun slowly rose.
The target was unmistakably the unconscious Zhang Zhenbang on the ground!
