"Mom, what do you mean? I don't understand," Su Xue said, unable to accept this reasoning.
"You are a smart child; how could you not understand? There is an insurmountable gap between you and Jiang Chen. You are destined not to be together. Why cling to it now? Besides, you haven't seen Jiang Chen in over a decade. Your feelings for him are stuck in childhood. I think you're just too obsessed, and deep down, you're not even sure what your feelings for Jiang Chen really are," Su Qin advised earnestly.
"I am sure, Mom. I'm not a child anymore; I have the ability to discern my feelings," Su Xue replied firmly without hesitation.
Su Qin's expression darkened. She truly hadn't expected her daughter to have such deep feelings for Jiang Chen. All these years without dating anyone was just to wait for that boy. Su Qin couldn't help but mentally pull up an image of Jiang Chen, examining his background closely. She tried to find his redeeming qualities but came up empty.
"If I had known back then, I shouldn't have left Xue Er in the countryside," Su Qin thought regretfully. Having been through it herself, she knew that once someone fell into the whirlpool of love, it was hard to extricate oneself. However, she was also relieved that she had brought her daughter to the United States early on. It wasn't too late; with her presence, she would ensure that the tragedy that befell her would not repeat itself with her daughter.
Su Qin was confident that her involvement would make her daughter let go. Moreover, in Su Qin's eyes, Jiang Chen truly had nothing worthy of her daughter's affection. Even if her daughter wasn't a princess from the Wang family, Su Qin wouldn't look favorably upon Jiang Chen.
People change, and so did Su Qin. After all, she was no longer a girl in her twenties dreaming of love. The years spent in high society had made her forget her rural roots and reluctant to mention her background. Her habits now reflected those of an upper-class lady.
Having finally rebirthed herself into high society, how could Su Qin allow her daughter to be with an ordinary boy like Jiang Chen?
The mother and daughter stared at each other, the atmosphere thick with tension as neither was willing to back down.
"Mom, I don't want to return to the Wang family," Su Xue suddenly said seriously.
"Your father has only one daughter; the vast Wang family business needs an heir, and you are the most suitable candidate," Su Qin replied.
"I’m a daughter. Will a wealthy family in Huaxia allow a daughter to inherit?" Su Xue countered.
"There are cases where daughters can inherit if there are no sons or if the sons are unworthy. After all, a daughter carries the bloodline of the family," Su Qin asserted confidently.
"But I don’t want to inherit anything from the Wang family," Su Xue stated firmly.
"You still have the Wang family's blood running through your veins; that's unchangeable. Life is not something we can control entirely; you may not understand now, but you will later," Su Qin said patiently.
"Mom, you don’t need to say more. I won’t give up on Jiang Chen," Su Xue declared resolutely.
"What if Jiang Chen gives up on you?" Su Qin asked with a frown and a serious tone.
Su Xue fell silent, her expression complex.
Seeing her daughter’s silence, Su Qin chose not to speak further but instead contemplated her next move.
"It seems I'll have to take matters into my own hands regarding that boy Jiang Chen. Clearly, my previous warning didn’t work; after all, someone who has never experienced true high society doesn’t understand their own insignificance and helplessness. Since this boy cannot recognize his own lowly status and smallness, I'll help him see it," a cold smile crept onto Su Qin's lips.
"Xue Er, there's a party tonight; come with me. Oh, and make sure Jiang Chen comes too," Su Qin suddenly said.
"Mom," Su Xue exclaimed in shock, unsure of her mother's intentions.
"Is there a problem?" Su Qin's tone turned slightly oppressive.
"No problem, no problem, Mom. Jiang Chen has really achieved a lot in his career now, and he will definitely not let you down. I hope you can get to know him better and be more understanding," Su Xue said happily. Regardless of the circumstances, since her mother had agreed to let Jiang Chen attend the party, it was clear that she had already compromised.
Seeing her daughter's innocent demeanor, Su Qin smiled but chose not to comment further.
In the evening, around five o'clock, Jiang Chen arrived at Su Xue's home in an unremarkable taxi. This residence was specifically purchased by Su Qin for her daughter. Although Su Qin had remarried and started a new family in the United States, they did not live together.
Su Qin's husband in the United States was quite a traditional man and was also on his second marriage, bringing along a son and a daughter. When they all lived together during Su Xue's childhood, she often faced bullying from her step-siblings. Su Qin's husband did not treat Su Xue well either. As Su Xue grew older and entered high school, Su Qin bought her a place here so that she could live independently. Whenever she had time, Su Qin would come over to keep her company.
Having grown accustomed to independence from a young age, Su Xue felt comfortable living here; it was much better than being with a group of incompatible "family members." She preferred solitude.
"Jiang Chen gege!" Su Xue had been waiting at the door. Upon seeing Jiang Chen get out of the car, she hurried over with a bright smile.
Jiang Chen felt helpless; this girl was quite stubborn. Just a few days ago, he had casually referred to her as "sister," and now she called him "brother" every day. However, he didn't mind this term of endearment and smiled warmly like an older brother.
"I had some things to take care of today, so I arrived a bit late," Jiang Chen said with a smile.
