"You can rest in this dark room for now; it's rarely visited and relatively safe," Xiao Zhongyan said, handing her a small pouch. "This is Yin Xi Xiang; it can mask your aura and prevent you from being discovered. I'll be back shortly."
Nan Gong Shuang took the pouch, sniffed it, and her eyes widened in surprise. "This is made from Hong Mei Hua and Dong Rui? Xiao Gongzi actually knows how to blend fragrances?"
Xiao Zhongyan smiled gently. "I only have a superficial understanding, far less than your expertise. I'll be off now."
With that, he straightened his clothes and strode out of the study, gently closing the door behind him.
Returning to the dark room, Nan Gong Shuang took out the Plum Blossom Token and studied it carefully. The jade pendant was warm to the touch, finely crafted from high-quality white jade. The plum blossoms carved on its surface were lifelike, with each petal intricately detailed.
"Father, what exactly do you want to tell me?" she murmured, her fingers brushing over the pendant.
Suddenly, a flash of insight struck her. Yesterday at the Execution Ground, Chen Bo had not shouted "Mei Ying Bu San," but rather "Mei Ying, the truth of immortality!"
"Mei Ying Villa... there must be something important there," Nan Gong Shuang pondered as she pressed the token against the Plum Blossom Mark on her left wrist.
Strangely, every time the pendant neared the mark, the plum blossom patterns would faintly glow, with five petals lighting up in sequence as if guiding her direction.
"Could this be...?" Nan Gong Shuang suddenly had an idea and quickly took out a compass she always carried.
Placing the pendant above the compass, she was astonished to see that the light from the five petals pointed in different directions—East, South, West, North, and Center.
"The Five Elements! This represents the five cardinal directions!" Nan Gong Shuang realized with clarity. "The secret chamber of Mei Ying Villa must be located at the intersection of these five positions!"
Just as she was excited by this discovery, hurried footsteps and voices suddenly echoed from outside.
"Search carefully! Second Master suspects this kid has been acting suspiciously and may be harboring criminals!" a rough male voice commanded.
Nan Gong Shuang's heart raced as she quickly tucked away the compass and pendant, pressing herself against the wall to listen to the commotion outside.
The footsteps grew closer until the study door was pushed open.
"The young master isn't here; search!"
Several men resembling servants burst into the study and began rummaging through everything.
Hiding in the dark room, Nan Gong Shuang opened the Yin Xi Xiang given by Xiao Zhongyan, allowing its fragrance to envelop her body and mask her presence.
"I think there's a door behind the bookshelf!" one of the servants suddenly shouted.
Nan Gong Shuang's heart skipped a beat; their discovery of her hiding place was imminent! She swiftly took out several silver needles, ready for any confrontation.
At that moment, a cold voice came from the doorway: "Who allowed you to intrude into the young master's study?"
"Master Steward!" The servants were startled and quickly bowed in respect.
“A command from the Second Master requires careful consideration of where it is executed,” the butler scolded sternly. “The young master’s study is not a place you can enter at will. Get out!”
The servants dared not defy him and retreated, heads hung low.
The butler cast one last glance around the study, his eyes lingering on the bookshelf as if deep in thought, before turning to leave and gently closing the door behind him.
Nan Gong Shuang let out a sigh of relief, grateful that the situation had not escalated. Yet, she understood that Xiao Mansion was no longer safe, and she needed to leave as soon as possible.
After waiting for about an hour, the sky darkened, and the door to the study was finally pushed open again. Xiao Zhongyan strode in, his expression grave.
“What happened?” Nan Gong Shuang asked warily as she stepped out from her hiding place.
“My uncle suspects I know the whereabouts of the remnants of the Nangong Family and has sent people to search my residence and study,” Xiao Zhongyan whispered. “Fortunately, the butler arrived in time; otherwise, you might have been exposed.”
