"Someone is following us," she whispered, her gaze sharp as a blade, scanning the surrounding darkness.
Xiao Zhongyan tensed up, his hand resting on the sword at his waist. "Where?"
"Right there..." Before Nan Gong Shuang could finish her sentence, an arrow whistled through the air, aimed directly at her throat!
In a split second, Nan Gong Shuang dodged to the side, the arrow grazing her hairpin before embedding itself in the tree trunk behind her.
"There's an ambush!" Xiao Zhongyan shouted, drawing his sword to protect Nan Gong Shuang.
From the shadows, a dozen figures clad in black suddenly surged from all directions, surrounding the two of them.
"Nan Gong Yu Nie, surrender!" the leader said coldly, his voice chilling to the bone.
Nan Gong Shuang sneered. "Zheng Yushi's lackeys don’t even dare to show their true faces?"
The man snorted in response. "If you know what's good for you, come back with us to see Zheng. Otherwise, don't blame us for being rude!"
"I, Nan Gong Shuang, have never believed in evil," she declared fiercely, drawing silver needles from her sleeve. "If you want to capture me, you'll have to get past this first!"
Before she finished speaking, the black-clad figures rushed forward, blades flashing and killing intent rising.
Xiao Zhongyan unsheathed his sword, its silver light like a rainbow as he met the oncoming enemies. His swordsmanship was exquisite; he single-handedly held off several attackers while guarding Nan Gong Shuang.
Meanwhile, Nan Gong Shuang executed her lightness skill, darting through the enemy ranks like a swallow. The silver needles in her hand glinted with cold light; each one was precise and deadly, either sealing pressure points or striking vital spots.
"This girl is no ordinary fighter; everyone be careful!" the leader of the black-clad men warned loudly as he sensed danger.
But it was too late. In just a short moment, five or six of them lay on the ground, either incapacitated by silver needles or injured by Xiao Zhongyan's sword energy.
Seeing that the situation was turning against him, the leader suddenly pulled out a whistle from his pocket and blew it urgently.
"This is bad; he's calling for reinforcements!" Xiao Zhongyan's expression changed.
Sure enough, distant sounds of galloping hooves and battle cries soon echoed back—reinforcements that had been lying in wait were rushing to their aid.
"We need to go!" Xiao Zhongyan forced back several attackers with his sword and grabbed Nan Gong Shuang's hand as they dashed toward a nearby alley.
The two weaved left and right through the alley in an attempt to shake off their pursuers. However, it seemed that their pursuers were extremely familiar with the area; no matter how they twisted and turned, they could not lose them.
"This won't work; we'll exhaust ourselves at this rate," Nan Gong Shuang said breathlessly. "We need to find a way to completely shake them off."
Xiao Zhongyan looked around and suddenly pointed towards a river not far away. "That's Yu River; its current is swift. If we jump in, we might escape."
Nan Gong Shuang nodded, and they quickened their pace toward the riverbank.
As they approached the riverbank, a cavalry unit suddenly emerged from the side, blocking their path!
“Where do you think you're going?” the leading cavalryman shouted, and it was none other than Zheng Yushi himself!
Nan Gong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan were forced to halt, their backs against the riverbank, facing an increasing number of enemies.
“Xiao Gongzi, do you realize the crime of shielding a notorious criminal of the court?” Zheng Yushi sneered.
Xiao Zhongyan replied calmly, “Zheng speaks of 'court criminals'—but what exactly has the Nangong Family done? The case files from the massacre are still sealed; who has ever seen the so-called 'evidence'?”
“Impudent!” Zheng Yushi's expression darkened. “The Nangong Family's treason is well-documented. How dare a mere child like you comment on it? Come, seize them!”
Dozens of soldiers brandishing torches and weapons slowly advanced toward the two.
Nan Gong Shuang glanced at the rushing river behind her and then at the encirclement ahead, quickly weighing her options in her mind.
“Xiao Gongzi,” she whispered, “you should go. There's no need to take risks for me.”
