The moonlight poured like water over the two figures, casting long shadows behind them. Tomorrow, they would embark on their journey to Mei Ying Villa, seeking the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique, a book that held the fate of the Nangong Family and the life and death of Nangong Shuang.
The road ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty. Yet at this moment, Nangong Shuang was no longer the helpless little girl she once was. With the support of the Five Elements Heart-Devouring Poison Classic, she had finally taken a substantial step on her path of vengeance.
The sky was darkest just before dawn, but Nangong Shuang knew that dawn would eventually arrive. And she would walk her own path of revenge with the Cold Poison coursing through her veins!
In a hidden corner nearby, a pair of cold eyes watched as Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan disappeared into the distance.
"The girl from the Nangong Family indeed has some skills," a hoarse voice whispered. "However, since Shadow Pavilion has taken on this task, failure is not an option. Mei Ying Villa... heh, it’s perfect for a complete trap!"
At dawn, as the red sun rose from the east, casting a golden veil over the mountains, Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan stood outside the southern gate of the capital, gazing solemnly at the distant peaks.
"Mei Ying Villa is located in the southern mountains, about thirty miles from the capital," Xiao Zhongyan pointed towards the lush green hills. "The terrain is treacherous and the roads are rugged; traveling alone will surely attract attention."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement. "Since people from Shadow Pavilion are already watching us, acting alone is indeed unwise. We need to find a way to conceal our movements."
"Coincidentally, a merchant caravan is set to depart for the southern mountains today," Xiao Zhongyan pondered. "I know the caravan leader, Lu Tong; he is generous and values loyalty. If we can join their group, we can travel safely while avoiding prying eyes."
"That sounds excellent," Nangong Shuang replied with a slight nod but then frowned. "However, merchant caravans move slowly; it may delay our journey."
"Haste makes waste," Xiao Zhongyan gently reminded her. "It's more important to arrive safely; being delayed by a day or two is not a big deal."
As they spoke, a lively scene unfolded outside the city gate. Various merchants and travelers bustled about as a large caravan prepared to set off. Several horse-drawn carts were lined up in succession, with guards holding weapons and maintaining vigilant expressions.
Xiao Zhongyan led Nangong Shuang towards one of the leaders at the front. "Brother Lu!"
The man was dressed in sturdy attire with a short knife hanging at his waist. Upon hearing his name, he turned around and upon seeing Xiao Zhongyan, broke into a hearty smile. "Ah! Isn’t this Xiao Xian-di? It’s been a while; how have you been?"
"Thanks to Brother Lu's kindness, all is well," Xiao Zhongyan replied with cupped hands. "I came today to ask for your help."
Lu Tong clapped him on the shoulder with enthusiasm. "Speak freely, Xiao Xian-di! If it’s something I can do, I won’t refuse!"
"My companion here, Nangong Shuang, and I wish to travel to the southern mountains and would like to join Brother Lu's caravan. May we?"
Lu Tong looked Nangong Shuang up and down with a hint of curiosity in his eyes but quickly returned to his cheerful demeanor. "What could be easier? We happen to be passing through the southern mountains as well; let’s travel together for mutual support."
"Thank you, Brother Lu!" Xiao Zhongyan expressed his gratitude.
"No need for formalities," Lu Tong waved his hand before turning to Nangong Shuang. "Miss, you seem unfamiliar; may I ask your name?"
Nangong Shuang performed a slight bow. "I am surnamed Shuang; my given name is Er. I am heading to the southern mountains in search of an esteemed physician."
"So you are a healer; no wonder you carry yourself so well," Lu Tong nodded approvingly. "Alright then, it’s settled! We will set off immediately; please follow me."
He arranged for Xiao Zhongyan and Nangong Shuang to ride in one of the middle carts—this cart had fewer goods loaded in it and was spacious with soft cushions laid out inside, clearly showing that Lu Tong had made special accommodations for them.
