Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before nodding, "Alright, once Xiao Gongzi returns, we will set off immediately."
"There’s one more thing," Lu Ming hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "You should be cautious about that Xiao Gongzi..."
"Why do you say that?" Nangong Shuang frowned.
"I found out that the Xiao Family is connected to the Nangong Family Massacre Case," Lu Ming said seriously. "The official responsible for the execution back then was a trusted subordinate promoted by the Xiao Family. While I can't be sure if this Xiao Gongzi is aware of it, I must remind you to be on guard against any deceit."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank; this aligned with her previous suspicions. The Xiao Family was indeed involved in the annihilation of the Nangong Family, but whether Xiao Zhongyan participated was still uncertain.
"Thank you for the warning; I will keep it in mind," she replied calmly, though her heart was tumultuous.
Just then, Xiao Zhongyan hurried back, looking anxious. "This is bad! The Shadow Pavilion's people have surrounded us! We need to leave immediately!"
Before he finished speaking, a sudden cacophony of shouts and clashing weapons erupted outside the camp. Dozens of men in black rushed in from all directions, their blades glinting ominously.
"Protect the goods!" Lu Tong shouted as he led the guards to confront the attackers.
"Follow me!" Lu Ming grabbed Nangong Shuang and said, "We can avoid the main force by taking the back mountain path."
Nangong Shuang glanced back at the fighting crowd and saw Xiao Zhongyan fiercely battling against the enemies, his movements agile and his swordplay exquisite.
"Xiao Gongzi!" she called out loudly.
Hearing her voice, Xiao Zhongyan turned and immediately dispatched a black-clad assailant before leaping to Nangong Shuang's side. "Hurry!"
The three quickly retreated from the battlefield, racing along the back mountain path. The sounds of battle faded behind them, but they did not dare let their guard down as they sprinted deeper into the mountains.
Along the way, Xiao Zhongyan frequently looked back to check if anyone was pursuing them, his expression grave.
"Lu brother, how did you know about this path?" he asked casually.
Lu Ming replied without hesitation, "I have been traveling with merchant caravans for years and am familiar with these mountain roads. This path was made by hunters and is rarely known."
Xiao Zhongyan nodded thoughtfully and did not press further.
After running for about half an hour, they arrived at a platform on the mountainside. Ahead, the road steepened sharply, with a bottomless cliff on one side.
"Up ahead is Mei Ying Villa," Lu Ming pointed towards a lush expanse of forest in the distance. "If we pass through that grove, we will see the villa."
Nangong Shuang focused her gaze and could vaguely make out the outline of ancient buildings within the woods; it must be Mei Ying Villa.
"Let’s take a short break before continuing," Lu Ming suggested.
The three rested briefly on the platform, each lost in their own thoughts. Nangong Shuang contemplated a series of issues involving Feng Yu Pavilion, Shadow Pavilion, and the imperial edict, feeling increasingly perplexed.
Xiao Zhongyan remained vigilant, his eyes glinting with caution as he scanned the surroundings.
"Brother Lu," he suddenly spoke, "I've heard that Mei Ying Villa has been uninhabited for many years. Do you know anything about it?"
Lu Ming paused for a moment, then regained his composure. "I know a little. It was originally a retreat for a wealthy merchant, but for some unknown reason, it fell into disrepair. There are rumors that the villa is haunted, and the locals tend to avoid it."
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "I see. But I wonder why the medical texts that Nangong Shuang is looking for would be in such a place?"
Lu Ming turned to Nangong Shuang, waiting for her explanation.
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before saying, "My father was friends with the owner of the villa and had entrusted some precious medical texts there. Before he passed away, he instructed me to retrieve them."
Amidst the lies intertwined with truth, even Nangong Shuang herself could not discern which words were genuine and which were false.
Lu Ming seemed to be deep in thought and was about to speak when suddenly, a flurry of hurried footsteps and shouts echoed from down the mountain.
"This is bad; someone is chasing us!" Xiao Zhongyan said alertly as he drew his sword.
