The three quickly got up and ran toward the manor. The mountain path was rugged and overgrown with thorns, forcing them to slow their pace and tread carefully.
The sounds of their pursuers grew closer, shouts clearly audible: “Catch Nan Gong Yu Nie! Alive or dead, we want to see her!”
“It’s definitely aimed at me,” Nangong Shuang gritted her teeth.
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” Xiao Zhongyan reassured her. “Let’s shake off the pursuers first.”
They quickened their pace, passing through a dense bamboo forest until they emerged into a clearing. An ancient manor appeared before them, its crimson gate faded and the roof covered in moss and weeds, clearly abandoned for many years.
“We’re here, Mei Ying Villa!” Lu Ming pointed at the manor. “Hurry inside!”
The three rushed toward the main gate, only to find it tightly shut and locked.
“Let me handle this!” Xiao Zhongyan drew his sword and swiftly severed the lock before pushing the door open.
They quickly entered the manor, and Xiao Zhongyan shut the door behind them, wedging a wooden stick against it to temporarily block their pursuers.
Inside the manor, weeds grew wildly and leaves littered the ground; several buildings were in a state of disrepair. In the center stood a two-story main building, flanked by side rooms and a flower hall, with a plum grove faintly visible in the back.
“Mei Ying Villa...” Nangong Shuang murmured, her heart racing. This place held the secrets of the Nangong Family and was tied to her own mysterious origins.
“Miss, don’t dawdle; the pursuers will be here soon,” Lu Ming reminded her. “We need to find somewhere to hide.”
Snapping back to reality, Nangong Shuang nodded. “Let’s check the main building.”
The three hurried toward the main building. As they pushed open the door, a musty smell hit them. Inside, furniture was covered in thick dust, cobwebs hung everywhere, and an air of desolation permeated the space.
“It’s been abandoned for years; we probably won’t find anything here,” Xiao Zhongyan said as he surveyed his surroundings with a furrowed brow.
“Don’t rush; let’s look around,” Nangong Shuang encouraged him. “Father said that the entrance to the secret chamber is hidden and can’t be found by those who aren’t in the know.”
They split up to search for any possible entrances to the secret chamber within the main building. Nangong Shuang entered a study where she found bookshelves askew and books scattered across the floor, already moldy and deteriorating.
She examined every possible mechanism but found nothing. Just as she was about to leave, she noticed something unusual on the wall behind the bookshelf. Upon closer inspection, she saw that a plum blossom was carved into the wall, identical to the mark on her wrist!
“Here!” Nangong Shuang exclaimed excitedly.
Xiao Zhongyan and Lu Ming rushed over at her call and also spotted the Plum Blossom Mark on the wall.
“Could this be an entrance to the secret chamber?” Xiao Zhongyan asked doubtfully.
Without answering, Nangong Shuang pressed her left wrist with its Plum Blossom Mark against the mark on the wall. To their amazement, it began to emit a faint glow, and then the entire wall slowly moved aside, revealing a dark passageway!
“There really is a secret chamber!” they exclaimed in unison.
At that moment, a loud crashing sound came from outside the door; the pursuers had arrived!
"Get in quickly!" Lu Ming urged.
The three of them squeezed into the secret passage, and the wall immediately closed behind them, isolating them from the outside world. The passage was pitch dark, and they couldn't see their hands in front of their faces.
"I'll take care of it." Lu Ming took out a fire starter and lit a torch, illuminating the narrow corridor.
The passage extended downward, seemingly leading underground. The three of them proceeded cautiously, walking for about a hundred steps before the space opened up before them.
A spacious underground chamber appeared, its walls embedded with unknown luminous pearls that emitted a soft glow. Inside were various peculiar instruments and books, and in the center stood a stone table with a bright red wooden box on top.
"What is this..." Nangong Shuang approached the stone table, her hands trembling slightly.
"Be careful!" Xiao Zhongyan suddenly grabbed her arm. "Let's check if the surroundings are safe first."
