Nangong Shuang thanked Lord Guo, who then gave a few more instructions regarding Guo Chunyi's care before leaving to handle official business.
In the afternoon, Nangong Shuang prepared the final dose of medicine for Guo Chunyi. Just as she was about to take it to the bedroom, Xing Er rushed in, looking anxious.
"Nangong Shuang, the lady requests you to come immediately!" Xing Er said urgently. "Miss is having another episode, and it's worse than before!"
Nangong Shuang's heart sank, but she remained calm and asked, "The medicine is ready; I'll take it over right away."
"There's no time!" Xing Er insisted. "Miss is foaming at the mouth, and Madam is crying in panic. Please hurry!"
Nangong Shuang placed the medicine bowl on the table without showing any emotion and followed Xing Er out of the kitchen. However, instead of heading directly to Guo Chunyi's bedroom, she quietly approached from another corridor.
Peering through the window, she saw Guo Chunyi lying peacefully in bed while Madam Guo sat nearby reading, completely unfazed by the urgency described by Xing Er.
Understanding what was happening, Nangong Shuang quickly returned to the kitchen. Just as she reached the door, she noticed a young maid stealthily sprinkling some powder into the medicine bowl before hastily leaving.
Nangong Shuang sneered quietly and followed her. She saw the maid meet up with Xing Er, and they exchanged a few words in hushed tones, both wearing smug expressions.
"It seems they plan to poison the medicine and frame me," Nangong Shuang thought to herself. "I must find an opportunity to expose them."
Returning to the kitchen, she discarded the poisoned medicine and brewed a new batch while secretly hiding a small porcelain vial containing the extracted poison from the original bowl in her sleeve.
Carrying the new medicine to Guo Chunyi's room, Nangong Shuang found Madam Guo still present and said, "The medicine is ready; please let Miss take it."
Guo Chunyi obediently drank the medicine and smiled. "Sister Shuang's medicine is bitter but truly effective. I feel completely recovered!"
Madam Guo smiled with relief. "Thanks to Nangong Shuang." She glanced out at the sky. "It's getting late; I need to check on the preparations for tonight's banquet. Nangong Shuang, please stay here and chat with Guan Chunyi for a bit; a maid will come soon to help you get ready."
"Yes, Madam," Nangong Shuang replied respectfully.
Once Madam Guo left, Guo Chunyi excitedly grabbed Nangong Shuang's hand. "Sister Shuang, tonight's banquet will be lively! Father has invited many officials from court, even the Sixth Prince will be coming!"
"The Sixth Prince?" Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat as she recalled how he had helped during the incident at Mei Ying Villa. If he appeared tonight, it could be either a blessing or a curse.
"Yes! The Sixth Prince is close with my father and often visits our residence," Guo Chunyi said innocently. "By the way, Sister Shuang, I heard you were Second Sister's personal maid at Qian Mansion? How is that annoying Qian Ruyi doing?"
Nangong Shuang was surprised. "Miss Guo knows Miss Qian Er?"
"Of course! We used to play together all the time but had a falling out later," Guo Chunyi pouted. "She’s so full of herself and always boasts about how well Xiao Zhongyan treats her; it’s infuriating."
Nangong Shuang felt a stir of interest; it seemed there was some bad blood between Guo Chunyi and Qian Ruyi, who was closely associated with Xiao Zhongyan. Could there be a connection here?
"Speaking of which, does Miss Guo Chunyi know Xiao Family Young Master?" Nangong Shuang asked cautiously.
Guo Chunyi shook her head. "Not very well; I've only seen him a few times at palace banquets. But I heard that Xiao Family's Second Young Master, Xiao Zhongmo, has recently gained favor with His Majesty; many people in court are trying to win him over."
“Xiao Zhongmo?” Nangong Shuang noted the name, recalling that Xiao Zhongyan had mentioned having a younger brother, and this must be him.
As they were chatting, Xing Er entered with several maidservants, saying they were there to help Nangong Shuang with her grooming and changing of clothes. Guo Chunyi urged Nangong Shuang to get ready, stating that she too needed to change into new attire for the banquet.
