Nangong Shuang followed Xing Er into a meticulously prepared room, where warm water and exquisite dresses awaited her.
"This dress was specially prepared by the lady for you. Please wear it," Xing Er said respectfully, a hint of cunning flickering in her eyes.
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly. "Thank you, Miss Xing Er."
On the surface, she appeared calm, but inside, she was on high alert. Xing Er and the others must have ulterior motives; she needed to be cautious.
As the banquet was about to begin, the Guo Residence bustled with activity. Dressed in splendid attire, Nangong Shuang stood before the mirror, seemingly engrossed in her preparations for the event while actually keeping a close watch on her surroundings.
When Xing Er brought over a box of rouge, Nangong Shuang keenly sensed something unusual about it. The color was too vivid, and it emitted a faint, strange fragrance that was clearly different from ordinary rouge.
"This rouge is quite striking; I wonder where it was made?" Nangong Shuang feigned interest.
Xing Er smiled and replied, "This was specially prepared by the lady for you. It is said to be used by the noble ladies in the palace and looks particularly enchanting when applied to the face."
Nangong Shuang accepted the box with a smile but did not use it immediately. Instead, she dabbed a bit on her wrist with a handkerchief to test the color. Sure enough, within moments, her wrist flushed with a faint red hue accompanied by a slight stinging sensation.
"Indeed, there is something hidden here," Nangong Shuang thought with a cold smile in her heart while maintaining an impassive expression. "This rouge is indeed beautiful, but my skin is quite sensitive; I fear I cannot use such vibrant colors. Please fetch me something more subtle, Miss Xing Er."
Xing Er's expression changed slightly but quickly returned to normal. "Of course, I will go get some."
Once Xing Er left, Nangong Shuang swiftly took out a small cloth bag from her sleeve and poured the rouge into it. Then she retrieved her own ordinary rouge from her belongings and placed it back in the original box.
When Xing Er returned, Nangong Shuang had already finished her makeup and looked radiant.
"Nangong Shuang is truly beautiful," Xing Er praised, though a flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes.
Nangong Shuang smiled modestly. "You flatter me. Is the banquet about to start?"
"It has already begun. The master specifically instructed that you take the seat of honor," Xing Er guided her.
Following Xing Er into the banquet hall, Nangong Shuang saw that the room was ablaze with light and filled with guests. Lord Guo rose to greet her as soon as he spotted her and led her to the seat of honor.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Nangong Shuang, who saved the life of our young lady," Lord Guo introduced her to the guests. "Her medical skills are exceptional; she diagnosed the Purple Butterfly Poison that even the Imperial Medical Institute could not handle—truly a miraculous healer."
The guests praised her one after another, their eyes filled with curiosity and admiration. Nangong Shuang remained humble and did not take credit for herself.
During the banquet, Madam Guo personally poured wine for Nangong Shuang. "Nangong Shuang, this is our family's treasured Daughter's Red wine; please have a taste."
Nangong Shuang accepted the cup but did not drink immediately. Instead, she smiled and said, "I have a low tolerance for alcohol; I fear I may not enjoy it fully. I hope you understand, Madam."
"No worries; just drink a little," Madam Guo said gently while keeping a close watch on Nangong Shuang's every move.
Nangong Shuang raised her glass in salute to Madam Guo but only took a small sip without truly drinking it down. She sharply sensed that there might be an issue with this wine as well; it had an unnaturally sweet taste.
At that moment, a servant hurried in and whispered a few words into Lord Guo's ear. Lord Guo's expression changed, and he stood up, saying, "The Sixth Prince has arrived!"
The guests all rose to greet him. Soon, a young man of remarkable demeanor entered the hall, surrounded by attendants. It was indeed the Sixth Prince!
Nangong Shuang bowed her head in greeting, but her heart raced with anxiety. The Sixth Prince had seen her true self at Mei Ying Villa; she wondered how he would react upon seeing her now.
"Please, no need for formalities," the Sixth Prince said gently, his gaze sweeping over the guests before briefly resting on Nangong Shuang, only to move away as if nothing had happened.
