“Ha ha, Su Xue, you really understand me,” Jiang Chen said with a smile.
“Of course! Hehe,” Su Xue replied, clearly pleased by Jiang Chen's compliment.
These two certainly had a good rapport, but Su Qin couldn’t share in their happiness. She simply did not approve of Jiang Chen as her son-in-law.
“Hmph, what do kids know? Alright, let’s get going,” Su Qin said coldly. Watching her daughter and Jiang Chen display their affection made her quite unhappy.
Su Qin drove a BMW X7, which suited her domineering personality perfectly.
“Jiang Chen, I heard from Xue Er that you’ve become quite successful in your career. Just a few days ago, you treated Xue Er to a meal that cost over a hundred thousand dollars. Is that true?” Su Qin casually asked while driving.
“It’s true,” Jiang Chen replied.
Su Qin naturally didn’t believe him. She stubbornly thought that her daughter and Jiang Chen were deceiving her. Even if Jiang Chen had made some progress in recent years, it was hard to believe he could afford such an extravagant meal.
However, Su Qin didn’t plan to expose Jiang Chen’s supposed lie just yet. Instead, she continued, “Haha, it seems you really have made it big. Spending over a hundred thousand dollars on a meal means your annual salary must be over a hundred million by now, right? With that kind of income, even the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies might not earn as much. You’re still young and haven’t even graduated from university, yet you’ve surpassed those elites in their thirties and forties. That’s quite impressive.”
Anyone could hear the sarcasm in Su Qin’s tone; what sounded like praise was actually mockery.
“Mom, Jiang Chen must have started his own business. Can you please stop using that strange tone?” Su Xue quickly defended Jiang Chen.
“It’s fine. It’s normal for your mother to doubt me. I’ll slowly tell you about my situation when you return to Huaxia next year,” Jiang Chen said gently with a smile.
“Okay,” Su Xue nodded, her eyes filled with trust in Jiang Chen’s words.
“Jiang Chen, let me give you a piece of advice. Whether you’ve succeeded in business or just made some small money, there’s no need to act like a nouveau riche. Do you know what it means to be part of the noble class? It’s not just about having money; the most important thing is the inner quality that radiates from within,” Su Qin warned with a cold smile.
Jiang Chen smiled faintly and didn’t argue back. What did the noble class mean to him?
“Mom, what’s so great about being part of the noble class? It’s not free at all. Jiang Chen, don’t listen to my mom,” Su Xue said, sensing the subtle tension in the car and wanting to break it.
Su Qin snorted lightly but didn’t say anything further; continuing would likely lead to an argument with her naive and stubborn daughter.
Forty minutes later, they arrived at a villa area on the outskirts of town. Each villa here was worth twenty to thirty million dollars; anyone living here was undoubtedly part of the upper class.
At the entrance, three foreigners were waiting.
“Qin, over here!” one of the foreigners in his fifties waved at Su Qin.
“Mom, they’re all here,” Su Xue said with an obvious change in expression upon seeing the three foreigners.
These three were none other than Su Xue's stepfather and her half-siblings—sister Audrey Green and brother Daniel Green.
Su Xue's stepfather, David Green, was an investment expert on Wall Street and was now worth over a billion dollars.
More than a decade ago, when she met Su Xue's mother, she was already worth tens of millions, considered wealthy in the United States. After suffering emotional wounds, Su Xue's mother gave birth to Su Xue and left her in their hometown while she ventured alone to the United States. At a party, she encountered David Green. Although David was divorced, he was an elite on Wall Street, exuding the aura of high society. Additionally, in her quest for a U.S. green card, Su Xue's mother ultimately accepted David's pursuit.
After their marriage, Su Xue's mother did not immediately bring Su Xue to the United States; instead, she first established herself there before bringing her daughter over. The house where Su Xue currently lives, valued at several million, was purchased by her mother using her own savings without spending a dime of David Green's money. Su Qin had her own plans; she didn't want to use her current husband's money for her daughter. If she relied on someone else's finances, Su Xue would never feel secure in that house.
Su Qin initially thought that Su Xue would spend her life in the United States. However, unexpectedly, after Su Xue entered university, the Wang family from Beijing came knocking at their door. The negotiation was led by the patriarch of the Wang family himself, who traveled to the United States for this purpose. In the end, Su Qin agreed to their demands: after Su Xue graduated from university, she would return to the Wang family, but with conditions of her own. Upon returning to the Wang family, Su Xue must ensure that a certain woman leaves.
The Wang family accepted this condition.
"This party is hosted by Wall Street tycoon Mokley. David and Mokley are friends, so of course he will be here. You don’t need to worry about them," Su Qin reassured her daughter. She understood her daughter's feelings well; her remarriage had undoubtedly hurt Su Xue deeply, especially since David and his family did not treat her kindly. However, Su Qin felt helpless; as a woman without sufficient strength, she still needed a man's support.
Su Xue sighed slightly and nodded but felt uneasy inside. She had developed a reflexive fear of the Green family trio. Since being brought to the United States and into this so-called new home, apart from her mother's care, all that awaited Su Xue were cold stares.
Her stepfather David Green was a domineering man who became increasingly arrogant and indulgent as his career expanded and wealth accumulated. He spent more time away from home than he did at home—reportedly having lovers all over the world. When Su Xue learned about this years ago, she felt indignant for her mother; however, her mother seemed unfazed by it all. Eventually, Su Xue realized that there was little affection between her mother and stepfather, so she chose to turn a blind eye to his hedonism.
The two half-siblings constantly excluded, undermined, and mocked Su Xue. After living in such an environment for seven years, it was only after her mother bought that house that Su Xue finally moved out. Once she did, it felt like a liberation; living in that house had always made her feel like an outsider.
As she approached the Green family trio, they finally noticed Jiang Chen and turned their attention toward him simultaneously.
"Is this your boyfriend?" David Green asked coldly.
Although David's words were typically harsh and icy, this particular question brought joy to Su Xue's heart.
