“Do you think he looks like one?” Su Qin snorted.
David Green looked at Jiang Chen again, puzzled. “He really doesn’t resemble one. Su Xue’s taste can’t be that poor. If he’s not your boyfriend, why bring him here? Mokley’s party doesn’t welcome outsiders.”
“To you, I’m also an outsider. Mom, you all go ahead. Jiang Chen and I will just stroll around nearby,” Su Xue said coldly. She could tolerate a lot, but she absolutely wouldn’t allow the Green family to insult Jiang Chen.
Moreover, seeing the Green family present made Su Xue realize that even if she attended this party, she wouldn’t feel comfortable, so she decided not to go.
Since Su Xue had rarely spoken up before, even when bullied, her sudden defiance surprised David Green slightly. However, as an elder, he didn’t feel it was worth arguing with a younger person.
“Do as you wish,” David Green said dismissively.
“Ha! It seems that Su Xue and this kid have quite the relationship. But Su Xue, your taste is really poor; this kid is just too mediocre,” Daniel Green mocked.
Su Xue’s expression darkened, and just as she was about to argue back, a hand grabbed her arm.
“There’s no need to argue with them; it’s not worth it,” Jiang Chen’s voice was soft but clear enough for Su Xue to hear.
A sense of calm washed over Su Xue, and her earlier frustration dissipated. Indeed, their mockery was best met with silence; remaining unbothered and composed was the best response. If they continued talking, it would only be self-indulgent chatter.
“Alright, let’s stop talking and go inside for the party. This kid came all the way from Huaxia to visit Xue Er. There’s an old saying in Huaxia: ‘Isn’t it a joy to have friends come from afar?’ This is a good opportunity for him to broaden his horizons and meet the upper class of the United States,” Su Qin interjected diplomatically.
“Let’s go in,” David Green said indifferently, no longer wanting to focus on Jiang Chen.
Over an hour later, the party finally ended.
“Jiang Chen, what did you think of the party?” Su Qin asked in the car on the way back.
“I’ve never had much interest in parties or gatherings like this. I was mostly focused on eating. If I had to say something, some of the food at this party was quite delicious,” Jiang Chen replied with a smile.
Su Qin couldn’t help but be taken aback; Jiang Chen’s response was rather unexpected.
“Hmph! What a foodie,” Su Qin thought even less of Jiang Chen now. He came to this high-society party to assess his differences with upper-class people, yet all he cared about was eating.
“Pfft!” Su Xue couldn’t help but laugh at Jiang Chen’s serious demeanor. “I was only focused on eating too; the mousse cake tasted really good.”
“Xue Er,” Su Qin called out involuntarily. High-society gatherings weren’t meant for eating but for networking. Her daughter had only been with Jiang Chen for a short time and had already become as uncouth as him. This solidified Su Qin’s determination to prevent her daughter from continuing to associate with Jiang Chen.
“Oh.” Su Xue quickly fell silent.
Upon returning to Su Xue’s residence, she suggested that Jiang Chen stay over for the night, but Su Qin immediately intervened without hesitation. She didn’t even want to look at Jiang Chen any longer.
“I’ll take him to a hotel. Xue Er, you stay home and rest. I’ll be back soon; we need to have a serious talk,” Su Qin said in a low voice before taking Jiang Chen away.
Su Xue felt helpless; leaving her mother alone with Jiang Chen made her uneasy.
In the car, Su Qin was about to lecture Jiang Chen, but before she could say anything, Jiang Chen interrupted her.
"You don't need to repeat what you said three years ago. My answer hasn't changed since then. Just drop me off here; I'll take a taxi back to the hotel," Jiang Chen spoke first, cutting off Su Qin.
Su Qin felt a surge of frustration at his words.
"You’re still so stubborn. If you continue down this path, you’ll only hurt yourself and Xue Er. If you were a real man, you would learn to let go. You and Xue Er are no longer in the same league. She has a broader horizon ahead of her; why do you insist on being a stumbling block for her?" Su Qin said, both angry and helpless.
"Are you so sure that I will be a stumbling block for your daughter?" Jiang Chen replied with a hint of amusement.
"Don't doubt a mother's intentions. Xue Er is my daughter, and I know her better than you do. I won't harm her. Whether you're a stumbling block or not, you know in your heart. Xue Er will eventually return to the Wang family to inherit the family business. No matter how hard you try, if you lack the foundation, the Wang family won't recognize you. So, it's better to end this now rather than prolong the pain. You should understand what I mean—don't delay my daughter’s future. If you need money, I can give you a million." Faced with Jiang Chen's stubbornness, Su Qin resorted to offering money.
"Stop the car," Jiang Chen said.
"Is a million too little? Then how about two million?"
"It's not about the money. Just stop the car," Jiang Chen's tone grew heavier; he was tired of dealing with Su Qin.
"Five million is the best I can offer. Five million for you to promise me that you'll leave my daughter alone." Su Qin pulled over to the side of the road and spoke again, her gaze fixed intently on Jiang Chen.
