Was there a greater conspiracy waiting for her? Or was Xiao Zhongyan at odds with his family's stance?
As she pondered, Nangong Shuang suddenly sensed something unusual. A figure in black at the street corner was staring intently in her direction. When she turned her head, the person quickly melted into the crowd.
"Am I being followed again?" Nangong Shuang's heart raced with caution as she pretended to carry on casually, all the while discreetly observing her surroundings.
Indeed, there were not just one but several places where she was being watched. On a distant rooftop, at the entrance of a tea house, and behind a fruit stall, suspicious figures were lurking. These individuals coordinated seamlessly yet remained inconspicuous, clearly trained experts.
"People from the Shadow Pavilion?" Nangong Shuang's heart sank, her fingers instinctively tightening around the silver needles hidden in her sleeve.
Ever since that incident at the Li residence when Yao Yan revealed that her methods of medication were similar to those of the Nangong Family, she had known danger was near. Now it seemed that her enemies had begun to act, surrounding her completely!
Nangong Shuang maintained a calm expression, but alarm bells rang loudly in her mind. If she acted rashly, it would surely attract more enemies; if she feigned ignorance, she might be walking into a more elaborate trap.
After a moment's thought, she decided to return to Qian Mansion and devise a longer-term plan. After all, in the bustling streets, her pursuers would not dare to act openly. Once back at Qian Mansion, with Qian Yuanwai's reputation as protection, they would have to think twice before making a move.
Nangong Shuang deliberately slowed her pace and approached a fabric shop, pretending to browse for cloth while secretly monitoring the movements of her followers. Sure enough, those figures in black did not come closer; they merely observed from a distance, seemingly just tracking her rather than preparing to strike immediately.
"It seems they are only trying to figure out my movements to plan their next step," Nangong Shuang mused inwardly. "I need to find an opportunity to slip away; I can't let them follow me indefinitely."
After purchasing a few yards of fabric, Nangong Shuang continued on her way, intentionally taking several winding alleys. However, those figures in black shadowed her closely, maintaining their distance.
Reaching a bustling intersection, Nangong Shuang spotted a group of monks collecting alms surrounded by a throng of devotees. An idea struck her; she quickly made her way toward the crowd and slipped into the bustling mass amidst the chaos.
By the time those figures in black arrived, Nangong Shuang had vanished without a trace. They searched frantically but only saw an ocean of people—where could Nangong Shuang be?
Taking advantage of the confusion caused by the monks' alms collection, Nangong Shuang swiftly entered through the back door of an inn, passed through the kitchen, and exited through a side door, successfully shaking off her pursuers.
"Phew..." She leaned against the wall and took a moment to catch her breath. "These people are getting more skilled; it seems my danger is increasing."
Just as she was about to turn and leave, she suddenly heard a familiar voice nearby—it was Guo Chunyi!
Nangong Shuang turned toward the sound and saw an ornate carriage parked by the roadside with its curtain half-drawn, revealing Guo Chunyi's anxious face. She appeared to be speaking with someone inside the carriage, her expression worried and urgent.
Out of caution, Nangong Shuang did not approach but instead hid around the corner to observe discreetly.
Moments later, the curtain was fully drawn back and a figure stepped out from within—the very person she least expected: Xiao Zhongyan!
Nangong Shuang was taken aback; Xiao Zhongyan was secretly meeting with Guo Chunyi? Did they share some undisclosed connection?
Xiao Zhongyan looked serious as he spoke quietly with Guo Chunyi. They frequently glanced around them as if discussing something confidential.
"This is too dangerous!" Guo Chunyi's voice was low but still audible to Nangong Shuang. "My father has received news from Zheng Yushi; they suspect Sister Shuang is a descendant of the Nangong Family!"
"I know," Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "My second brother has already begun taking action and has sent people to monitor her every move."
