As the guards were blocked at the door, the young servant retreated towards the window, clearly intending to escape through it. Nangong Shuang observed coldly and noticed that this "young servant" was quite skilled; his movements revealed a foundation in martial arts, indicating he was no ordinary servant.
"Sister, what should we do?" Guan Chunyi anxiously grasped Nangong Shuang's hand, her face pale.
Nangong Shuang softly reassured her, "Do not be afraid, Miss. I am here." At the same time, she discreetly retrieved a silver needle from her hair and held it tightly in her hand.
With his back to the window, the young servant sneered, "Miss Guo, I apologize. I intended to complete my task quietly, but it seems this girl has seen through me. No matter; since I've been discovered, I might as well make it obvious!"
As he spoke, he suddenly turned around, seemingly about to leap out of the window. In that split second, Nangong Shuang raised her right hand, and the silver needle shot out like a meteor, striking the young servant's right shoulder acupoint!
"Ah!" The young servant cried out in pain as his right arm went numb and his short knife fell to the ground.
Seizing this opportunity, the guards rushed in from outside and subdued the young servant.
Guan Chunyi finally breathed a sigh of relief, looking at Nangong Shuang in shock. "Sister, you... what was that?"
Nangong Shuang feigned calmness as she withdrew her hand and replied nonchalantly, "I learned some self-defense techniques while traveling with my master when I was young. I didn't expect to use them today."
Zhang Lu struggled to stand steady, his face still somewhat pale. "Thanks to Nangong Shuang's quick thinking, or else the consequences would have been dire. Bring this spy away and interrogate him thoroughly!"
Just then, Madam Guo hurried over upon hearing the commotion, her face filled with fear. "What happened? Guan Chunyi, are you alright?"
Guan Chunyi rushed into her mother's embrace. "Mother, there was an assassin disguised as a servant trying to attack us. Fortunately, Sister Shuang saw through it and prevented a disaster."
Madam Guo looked at Nangong Shuang in shock. "Nangong Shuang, we owe you our gratitude."
Nangong Shuang quickly bowed. "Madam is too kind; this is what I should do."
Madam Guo sighed. "Things have been unstable in the capital lately. I never expected an assassin would infiltrate our Guo Residence. Zhang Lu, strengthen the guards and investigate this matter thoroughly; we cannot afford any negligence!"
"Yes, Madam," Zhang Lu replied respectfully before instructing the guards to take away the young servant. He also called for others to clean up the broken pieces on the ground and ventilate the area to disperse any lingering scent.
Once everyone had left, Guan Chunyi still felt shaken. "Sister, do you think that person was after whom? Me or you?"
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before shaking her head. "It's hard to say. Perhaps they were targeting Guo Residence itself; after all, those in high positions inevitably offend others."
She only spoke half of her thoughts. Deep down, Nangong Shuang knew that this assassin was likely after her. Ever since Yao Yan exposed Li Yingxue's scheme, her skills in both martial arts and medicine had drawn considerable attention from many people—especially with discussions about how her techniques resembled those of the Nangong Family.
"Regardless of anything else, I will not leave your side from now on," Guan Chunyi declared firmly. "I must tell Father about today's incident and ask him to send more people to protect us."
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly and did not oppose her. With Lord Guo's protection, her safety within Guo Residence would be even more assured and would facilitate her investigation into the past of the Nangong Family.
"If Miss does not mind, I am willing to stay by your side day and night," Nangong Shuang said gently. "However, today's banquet will likely need to be postponed."
Guan Chunyi nodded. "That's fine; I have no mood for guests right now anyway. Sister, let’s go to the study; there are many books there for you to browse through and help pass the time."
Nangong Shuang's eyes brightened; this was exactly what she had been hoping for. The Guo Residence was rich in books, and perhaps she could find records about the Nangong Family.
"That's wonderful. I happen to have some questions about poetry that I would like to ask you, Miss."
