Lord Guo turned to Nangong Shuang and said, “Nangong Shuang, I cannot say much, but you must remember, no matter what happens, never trust anyone, including me. The enemies of the Nangong Family are vast and omnipresent. If you truly possess the Nangong Bloodline, you must be even more cautious.”
Nangong Shuang's heart jolted; Lord Guo had directly mentioned her possessing the Nangong Bloodline! It seemed he had already seen through her identity but had chosen not to reveal it until now. His words appeared to be a warning that there were enemies within Guo Residence as well.
“Thank you for your guidance, my lord,” Nangong Shuang replied respectfully, though alarm bells rang in her mind.
Lord Guo nodded and waved his hand, signaling for them to leave. “Alright, you may go now. I have official matters to attend to.”
Nangong Shuang and Guan Chunyi bowed and began to withdraw. Just a few steps out, Lord Guo called out to her again, “Nangong Shuang, be sure to be careful tonight. Remember my words.”
Nangong Shuang turned back in response, her heart now more certain that Lord Guo was hinting at some impending trouble tonight!
Upon returning to her chamber, Guan Chunyi wore a worried expression. “Sister, Father’s words are quite strange. He seems to know a lot yet is unwilling to speak plainly. Do you really have a connection to the Nangong Family?”
Nangong Shuang gently took Guan Chunyi's hand. “Do not overthink it, Miss. Your father is just concerned for my safety; after all, there have been frequent assassinations lately. As for the Nangong Family, I did receive true medical teachings from them, but I have no blood relation to the Nangong Family itself.”
Guan Chunyi nodded with some skepticism but did not press further; however, the worry in her eyes remained unchanged.
The following day, Nangong Shuang stayed in her chamber, diligently studying the annotations of the Shanghan Zabing Lun that Lord Guo had gifted her. This book was indeed in her father's handwriting, with each note reflecting profound medical knowledge. As she read and recalled her father's teachings from his lifetime, tears began to dampen her clothes.
Later that night, Guan Chunyi came to visit her, bringing dinner and a pot of hot tea.
“Sister, you've been reading all day; your eyes are red,” Guan Chunyi said with concern. “You should eat something and take a break.”
Nangong Shuang gratefully nodded and shared the meal with Guan Chunyi. During dinner, Guan Chunyi mentioned that there would be distinguished guests visiting Guo Residence the next day and hoped that Nangong Shuang could accompany her in receiving them.
“What distinguished guests?” Nangong Shuang casually asked.
Guan Chunyi lowered her voice. “It’s Xiao Family’s Second Young Master, Xiao Zhongmo. I heard he has recently taken an interest in medical texts and specifically came here to seek advice.”
Nangong Shuang paused slightly with her chopsticks; Xiao Zhongmo? Wasn’t he the one who questioned her identity at Yao Yan? His visit to Guo Residence likely had ulterior motives!
“Are you familiar with Xiao Er Gongzi?” Nangong Shuang asked tentatively.
Guan Chunyi shook her head. “Not really. It’s just that Father has a good relationship with Xiao Xiang, so occasionally Xiao Family’s young men come to visit. However, Xiao Er Gongzi has a gloomy temperament, completely different from his elder brother Xiao Zhongyan; I don’t particularly like him.”
Nangong Shuang felt a stir in her heart. “It seems you admire Xiao Da Gongzi more?”
Guan Chunyi’s face flushed slightly. “Xiao Da Gongzi is knowledgeable and cultured; he truly deserves respect. It’s just a pity...”
She hesitated as if there was something difficult to say.
Nangong Shuang softly prompted, “What is it a pity about?”
After a moment of hesitation, Guan Chunyi finally whispered, “It’s just a pity that he disagrees with Father politically. Although Xiao Da Gongzi is the son of Xiao Xiang, he often opposes the Crown Prince; Father believes he lacks insight and is ruining his future.”
Nangong Shuang felt a sudden realization; it turned out that Lord Guo was part of the Crown Prince's faction, while Xiao Zhongyan stood in opposition to the Crown Prince! This might explain why Lord Guo had such a complex attitude towards her—on one hand, he sympathized with the Nangong Family's wrongful case, while on the other, he remained wary of her identity.
After dinner, Guan Chunyi reluctantly took her leave, and before departing, she specifically reminded Nangong Shuang to rest early.
