“No! It’s not like that!” Xiao Cha struggled to explain. “I was only looking for my handkerchief that I dropped. I did not steal anything! This Golden Hairpin isn’t mine; someone must have slipped it into my sleeve!”
Zhang Lu sneered, “A thief will always try to argue. Someone, search her quarters and see if there are any more stolen goods!”
Nangong Shuang stepped forward, unable to stand by idly. “Wait a moment. Xiao Cha is my maid; if there is any wrongdoing, it should be dealt with by me. Moreover, the matter has not been clarified yet; we cannot jump to conclusions.”
“Your words are misguided, Nangong Shuang,” Zhang Lu said with a sinister smile. “When items go missing in the residence, it is only proper to conduct a thorough investigation. Besides, who knows if the young lady is colluding with this maid?”
At this remark, Guan Chunyi frowned and said, “Zhang Butler, what do you mean by that? Sister Shuang was recommended by Qian Mansion and has a good character; how can you suspect her so easily?”
“Miss, please see reason. Ever since Nangong Shuang arrived at the residence, there have been repeated incidents of assassins breaking in and valuable items going missing. This is too much of a coincidence. I am merely following the rules and not trying to make things difficult,” Zhang Lu replied with a bow, though his face wore a triumphant smile.
Guan Chunyi turned to Nangong Shuang with an apologetic expression. “Sister, although I believe you and Xiao Cha, we must follow the rules of the residence and conduct a thorough investigation. How about we go together to Xiao Cha’s quarters and see what’s going on?”
Nangong Shuang understood that this was a trap set by Zhang Lu. He was framing Xiao Cha to undermine her. If this matter could not be resolved satisfactorily, not only would Xiao Cha be punished, but her own position in Guo Residence would also become more precarious.
“That sounds good,” Nangong Shuang replied calmly. “Since it concerns her innocence, we must investigate thoroughly. However, one thing remains unclear: why does Zhang Butler suspect Xiao Cha and specifically follow her?”
Zhang Lu was taken aback for a moment before responding, “With items frequently going missing in the residence lately, it is my duty to be extra vigilant. I noticed this maid acting suspiciously and decided to keep an eye on her.”
Nangong Shuang did not pursue the matter further and followed Guan Chunyi and Zhang Lu to Xiao Cha’s quarters. It was a simple little room where several maids were rummaging through drawers and cabinets.
“I found something!” one of the maids suddenly shouted as she pulled out a cloth bag from under the bed. When she opened it, it contained several pieces of jewelry and some silver coins!
“That’s not mine!” Xiao Cha exclaimed in terror. “I’ve never seen these things before; someone must have framed me!”
Zhang Lu laughed coldly. “With stolen goods in your possession, you still dare to argue? It seems this girl is not just a thief but a habitual one!”
Guan Chunyi’s face darkened as she turned to Nangong Shuang. “Sister, what... what should we do now?”
Nangong Shuang maintained her composure and said unhurriedly, “There’s something fishy here; I have a method to discern the truth.” She took out a small porcelain bottle from her sleeve. “This is Qi Xin Xiang; those who smell it will involuntarily speak their true thoughts. If Xiao Cha truly stole anything, she will confess; if someone is framing her, we will uncover the truth.”
Zhang Lu’s expression changed: “What is this Qi Xin Xiang? Such sorcery cannot be taken seriously!”
“You are mistaken, Zhang Butler,” Nangong Shuang replied calmly. “This fragrance is a secret remedy from physicians that calms the mind and promotes tranquility, allowing one to speak honestly. If Zhang Butler has nothing to hide, why fear a test?”
Guan Chunyi looked at the porcelain bottle with curiosity: “I trust your medical skills, sister. If this method can distinguish truth from falsehood, wouldn’t that be best?”
Seeing Guan Chunyi support her suggestion, Zhang Lu had no choice but to reluctantly agree: “If that’s the case, let’s give it a try.”
Nangong Shuang nodded and carefully opened the porcelain bottle. A delicate fragrance wafted out, filling the air with an unusual scent that calmed the mind and made one feel compelled to speak honestly.
“Xiao Cha,” Nangong Shuang asked gently, “have you ever stolen anything from the residence?”
