In the spring of the thirteenth year of Jiajing, in the city of Yangzhou, a light drizzle fell as Su Yuntang stood before the Hu Family Mansion, carrying a medical box and holding a green bamboo umbrella.
She looked up at the intricately carved vermilion gate, adjusted her blue cloth dress, and then stepped forward to knock on the door knocker.
"May I ask if this is the Hu Residence? I am Su Yuntang, recommended by Zhu Daifu, here to help your esteemed young lady with her health."
The doorman scrutinized her from head to toe. Though she was simply dressed, her demeanor was extraordinary. He clasped his hands together and said, "Please wait a moment; I will inform them right away."
Before long, a matron wearing a brown cotton gown and with her hair styled in a low bun came out, her face adorned with a warm smile.
"Are you Miss Su? I am Liu Mama, the maidservant by the young lady's side. Zhu Daifu has sent word that you are skilled in medicine, particularly in treating women's ailments. Please come in."
Su Yuntang closed her umbrella and bowed slightly in return. "Thank you for your trouble, Liu Mama."
They passed through the grand front hall and two courtyards before turning past a vermilion screen wall, revealing an elegant and tranquil small courtyard.
"This is where our young lady resides—Qingxi Garden, named after her given name," Liu Mama explained softly as she led Su Yuntang toward the main room.
In front of the window of the main room sat a young girl leaning against the frame. Hearing footsteps, she turned her head and smiled gently.
"Mama, is this the physician recommended by Zhu Daifu?"
"Yes, Miss. This is Miss Su," Liu Mama replied.
Su Yuntang took two steps forward and performed a respectful greeting. "Su Yuntang pays her respects to Miss Hu."
Hu Qingxi appeared to be around fifteen or sixteen years old, dressed in a lake blue skirt. She wore only a silver plum blossom hairpin with two beads in her hair. Her features were delicate, and her demeanor was gentle.
She observed Su Yuntang for a moment, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes. Despite her plain attire, the innate grace of this physician could not be concealed; every gesture exuded the elegance of a refined lady.
"Please rise, Miss Su. Zhu Daifu has praised you before my mother, saying your medical skills are remarkable."
"Zhu Daifu has overpraised me; I only have a superficial understanding," Su Yuntang replied humbly, yet her gaze remained steady and composed.
Hu Qingxi gestured for her to sit down and called for a maid to bring tea.
"I often experience headaches and dizziness, especially when my menstrual cycle approaches; it becomes quite severe. I have seen several doctors and tried many remedies without success. Zhu Daifu mentioned that you might have a solution."
Su Yuntang set down her tea cup. "May I examine your pulse, Miss?"
Hu Qingxi nodded as Su Yuntang arranged the pulse pillow, gently placing three fingers on Hu Qingxi's wrist. The two of them took the pulse for a quarter of an hour.
After finishing, Su Yuntang pondered for a moment and said, "Miss Hu, your pulse is thin and wiry, indicating liver qi stagnation and poor blood circulation. If you trust me, I can prescribe a remedy that will show results in three days."
"Really?" A glimmer of surprise flashed in Hu Qingxi's eyes. "Then I must trouble you, Miss Su."
"You're too kind." Su Yuntang picked up a brush and wrote down the prescription on paper, handing it to Liu Mama who stood nearby. She patiently explained, "After brewing, take it warm, once in the morning and once at night. Additionally, prepare a calming incense pouch to place by your pillow before sleep."
Hu Qingxi leaned over to look at the prescription, then glanced at Su Yuntang and smiled. "Miss Su not only has excellent medical skills but also writes beautifully."
"I'm flattered; I studied under my family's teacher for a few years when I was young." Su Yuntang slightly lowered her head, hiding the fleeting sadness in her eyes.
"That's even better!" Hu Qingxi clapped her hands. "I am in need of someone knowledgeable in medicine and literate by my side. Would Miss Su be willing to stay at Hu Residence as my personal physician?"
