Thunder rumbled ominously in the distance, echoing across the sky. At that moment, aside from Jiang Chen and a few others who remained standing, Master Pei Zhuang and the members of the Mafia were also on their feet. The Mafia members were completely at a loss; they had no choice but to follow Pei Zhuang's lead. Since Master Pei Zhuang refused to crouch down, they dared not do so either.
As another rumble of thunder rolled in, the faces of the Mafia members turned pale with fear.
“Master Pei Zhuang, perhaps we should take cover for now? We can deal with those people after the lightning passes,” Paul Gambino suggested cautiously.
“It’s fine. I refuse to believe that lightning will strike me. Don’t worry; we’re not at the highest point here, and those protruding rocks will attract the lightning instead,” Pei Zhuang replied, glancing at the towering stones around them.
Paul Gambino dared not argue but silently criticized him. Just moments ago, Pei Zhuang had been in the lowest and safest position, yet he was still struck by lightning. Such reasoning seemed unreliable.
Suddenly, a crackling sound filled the air as another bolt of lightning struck down. The powerful current surged through the sky, igniting the very atmosphere around them. The web-like flashes of electricity descended once more.
Pei Zhuang's nerves tensed again, but as a powerful figure of the Transcendent Realm, his reflexes were incredibly quick. In an instant, he leaped to a nearby boulder that stood over ten feet high.
With a deafening crash, lightning struck the boulder directly, shattering it into fragments. The current coursed through the ground, electrifying Paul Gambino and his companions’ hair into wild frizz. Had Pei Zhuang not jumped away just in time, this bolt would have turned the Black Hand Family members into charred remains.
Everyone stood frozen in shock, staring up at this scene. It seemed something was amiss; if the previous lightning strike on Pei Zhuang had been mere coincidence, could this one be as well?
Pei Zhuang's expression darkened as he looked at the cracked stone beside him and then at his own arm, which was scorched black from the electric shock. However, there was no time to dwell on his injuries; one coincidence could be dismissed, but two strikes were too much to ignore.
Why did the lightning seem to follow him? Pei Zhuang pondered. Did he truly commit some heinous act that angered the heavens? As an atheist, he did not believe in retribution; if there were any consequences for his actions, they would have manifested long ago.
Suddenly, he noticed Jiang Chen and his companions remaining calm amidst the chaos.
“Could they be behind this?” Pei Zhuang wondered but quickly dismissed the thought. If these two Huaxia individuals could control lightning, he would stand no chance against them.
What was really happening? As someone well-versed in various arts and techniques from Huaxia, Pei Zhuang understood that certain formations could attract heavenly thunder. However, such formations were incredibly complex and difficult to set up; moreover, there had been no signs of any formation being activated. This lightning seemed like ordinary lightning—yet how could it repeatedly target him? Pei Zhuang wasn’t foolish; there had to be something more to it.
Returning to stand among the Black Hand Family members, he noticed they now hesitated to approach him.
“What are you doing?” Hong Yue asked with dissatisfaction.
“Miss Hong Yue, I advise you to keep your distance from Master Pei Zhuang for now. Another wave of lightning is about to strike; it seems like it’s specifically targeting him,” Paul Gambino said nervously. Though he feared Master Pei Zhuang, he feared the lightning even more. No one was foolish enough to stand close to him when danger loomed overhead; being struck by lightning would be utterly embarrassing.
Hong Yue’s eyelids twitched slightly, but she refused to leave her master’s side.
Just as she was about to speak up, Master Pei Zhuang raised his hand to stop her.
“Master, this is just a coincidence. Perhaps it’s because you are the tallest among them, which attracted the lightning,” Hong Yue quickly offered an excuse for her master.
“This is no coincidence. Someone is controlling the lightning. Unfortunately, their skills are lacking; they’ve tried twice and still haven’t struck me,” Pei Zhuang sneered, his gaze directed at Jiang Chen.
“Master, could it be that they are behind this? No, that can’t be possible. How could a person possibly manipulate lightning?” Hong Yue suddenly realized but found it hard to believe.
“In the Great Thousand World, there’s nothing strange. But using such sneaky methods is rather pointless, isn’t it? If you’re going to use lightning, you should do it openly,” Pei Zhuang said deliberately, raising his voice meaningfully towards Jiang Chen.
With Pei Zhuang's words, everyone’s gaze turned towards Jiang Chen.
They had all regarded the lightning as a natural phenomenon, but now it was being claimed to be man-made, which completely overturned their understanding.
“Impossible! How could that Hua Xia Young Man have such power?”
“No need to think about it; it’s definitely impossible. That Huaxia People didn’t even move, how could he control lightning?”
“But it is strange how the lightning keeps targeting Pei Zhuang. Could it really be that heaven has opened its eyes?”
“It must be divine intervention! With all the things Pei Zhuang has done to anger the heavens, he wants to sweep through the martial world globally this time— even God can’t stand by and watch.”
The group continued to discuss while lying on the ground. Of course, they didn’t believe Pei Zhuang’s words; after all, if this Hua Xia Young Man really had such power to control lightning while standing still, then he would truly be half-human and half-god. No one wanted to accept that such a powerful person could exist in the world.
Yan Qingsong and Li Yunye were also somewhat stunned.
Li Yunye reacted quickly; combining Qin Xiaoya's earlier attitude with the situation, it seemed that the lightning strike against Pei Zhuang was indeed related to Jiang Chen. Although it felt unbelievable, upon closer thought, it was quite possible.
Li Yunye knew that Zhang Zuotian from Longhu Mountain controlled the Thunder Seal and could connect with the thunder from above. In Zhang Zuo's eyes, Jiang Chen was already like a deity. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising if Jiang Chen could summon the thunder from the heavens.
“Mr. Jiang, did you really create this lightning?” Li Yunye asked curiously about Jiang Chen's abilities since he didn’t have a clear understanding of them.
“Is there any need to ask? Do you really think heaven would open its eyes and strike Pei Zhuang with lightning?” Qin Xiaoya laughed.
“Uh, that’s true. Mr. Jiang, how did you do this?” Li Yunye chuckled awkwardly but was even more curious now. It seemed Jiang Chen hadn’t made any movements yet had conjured thunder; this was indeed mysterious and made people want to explore further.
