"Where?"
"There!"
Just as I turned around, a dagger plunged into my chest. "You... why..."
"Why?" She walked over, shaking her head, and quickly supported me. "Oh no, you're bleeding so much! Come, sit down and rest. I'll explain everything to you—
"I ask you, where did you meet me? At the bar—right? Yes! That place is full of filth; how could someone of your status just marry a woman like that? Besides, she's already married; how can she remarry? That would be against the law—don't think just because I graduated from fifth grade that I don't know this!
"To tell you the truth, I'm the real thief. Look here, look here, your bankbook and credit cards are all here, and you've even told me the passwords—how could I not kill you?"
Tears streamed down my face, and I didn't want to hear any more. But she continued: "Perhaps—you and your wife should really be called a pair of big fools! I've been visiting your home these past few days and have been secretly reading your wife's diary. I found out she plans to commit suicide today and claims she wants to 'take care of you' first. Upon seeing this news, I thought to myself—I must complete this task: wait for what your wife's diary mentioned to happen, then take what I deserve! Of course, I didn't expect—she only intended to vent her anger in the diary and had no intention of killing you. But that's fine; I can still follow the plan in the diary! Ha... ha..."
My breathing was faint; I could almost hear my wife Lisa calling from another realm.
The ruthless woman continued her endless chatter: "Hey, Old Brother! Just go on your way; with your intelligence, it's indeed tough to survive in this world.
"I'll leave this diary here. The police will have something to explain."
At that moment, with a loud thud, the diary slammed into my face. Who would have thought that such a blow would take away my last breath?
I... (I have died, and the narrative will no longer continue.)
In the park, where the wind howled and the cranes cried, the sky grew darker, and silence enveloped the surroundings.
At that moment, a wild cat let out a sharp "meow" as it darted near the two corpses by the bench. It lowered its head to sniff at the woman's face, then walked away, perhaps sensing the heavy aura of death and unwilling to linger.
The cat then crouched down beside the man's corpse. With a gentle tap of its paw, a thick diary fell to the ground with a thud. Startled, the wild cat let out another "meow" and scampered away, its long tail trailing behind.
The diary that had fallen open fortuitously to its last page was filled with fine handwriting. If the wild cat had stayed, it might have seen it, though it likely wouldn't have understood.
It read:
October 20th, Sunny
"Dear" Thief, or perhaps I should refer to you as "Madam" for more appropriateness. I am Lady Lisa. Recently, I've noticed that you have visited our home several times without even showing your face; that's rather inconsiderate of you.
Not to mention that you've been reading my diary entries one by one. After finishing, you even stole some of the red wine from my fridge (I truly feel fortunate that you didn’t happen to drink from the bottle my husband had spiked with sleeping pills), and then drunkenly sprawled across my bed for a deep sleep. By the time we returned from work, you would begrudgingly rub your eyes and leave in a daze.
At first, I didn't take it to heart; in fact, I felt a sense of gratitude that you were interested in my inner world! Otherwise, I doubt you would visit daily just to seek out my diary.
However, yesterday, I painstakingly captured your likeness on my digital camera set to take timed photos.
So you are the second wife my husband just found! Ah, I understand your intentions now—you want to wait until I do as written in my diary—kill my husband and then commit suicide, so you can take the valuables from his body afterward. Am I right? It seems that through my investigation, you are already a married woman and have no affection for my foolish husband, correct?
At first, I did plan to wait until that fool returned to the agreed meeting place after being at the square, then kill him and take my own life.
However, now I must change my mind. I have decided to commit suicide directly and let you do the killing. Wouldn't that be even better? After all, that guy is heartless enough; your "grand ambitions" truly make me scoff!
Lastly, I must solemnly remind you that I have made a statement regarding your crimes and sent a letter to the police station. You won’t have many days of freedom left.
If you are fortunate enough to read this diary, then hurry and flee under the cover of night! I wish you success from the underworld!
Goodbye.
