The doorbell rang as Lin Xiyao faced off against Qiu Mo Xuan.
"I told you, you can't sleep in my bed!"
"It's too small." Qiu Mo Xuan sat cross-legged on her bed, eyes still closed.
Lin Xiyao grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. "Then go sleep on the sofa!"
The pillow suddenly stopped mid-air and slowly floated back to its original position.
Lin Xiyao gritted her teeth in frustration as the doorbell rang three more times.
"Delivery! Your order of a couple's meal!"
She shot a furious glare at Qiu Mo Xuan before heading to the door. Outside stood a delivery guy in a yellow uniform, wearing a cat-eared helmet.
"Enjoy your meal!" he said, handing over the bag, but suddenly froze.
His gaze passed over Lin Xiyao and fixated on Qiu Mo Xuan behind her, his pupils dilating with fear as his fingers trembled.
The bag fell to the ground, spilling soup that soaked into the carpet.
"I-I’m sorry!" The delivery guy took two steps back, his voice shaking. "I'll get you another one right away!"
Qiu Mo Xuan appeared behind Lin Xiyao without her noticing. "Cat Demon?"
The delivery guy's ears suddenly popped out from the helmet—fluffy orange cat ears pressed tightly against his head. "P-Please spare me! I'm just delivering food!"
Lin Xiyao stared in surprise at the trembling cat ears. "Is it really... a cat?"
"Half-demon." Qiu Mo Xuan reached out and pinched the back of the delivery guy's neck. "Who sent you?"
"No one sent me here!" The Cat Demon was on the verge of tears. "I'm just a delivery worker! Humans pay me eighteen bucks an hour, and I still get complaints..."
Lin Xiyao looked at the takeout scattered all over the floor and suddenly felt a bit sorry for him. "Qiu Mo Xuan, let him go."
Qiu Mo Xuan squinted but eventually released his grip. The Cat Demon immediately curled up in the corner, his tail fluffed up in alarm.
"What's your name?" Lin Xiyao asked as he squatted down.
"Ju, Ju Xiao Wu..." The Cat Demon stole a glance at Qiu Mo Xuan. "I really just came to deliver food..."
Lin Xiyao handed him a pack of tissues. "Wipe your sweat."
As Ju Xiao Wu took the tissues, his claws accidentally slipped out, and he quickly pulled them back in.
Qiu Mo Xuan snorted coldly, causing him to shudder again.
"You..." Lin Xiyao hesitated for a moment. "Do you demons also have to work?"
"Of course, I need to eat." Ju Xiao Wu rubbed his ears with a look of grievance. "It's hard to find jobs in the human world right now, and my education level is low..."
Qiu Mo Xuan suddenly placed a hand on Lin Xiyao's shoulder. "He doesn't have any evil energy on him."
Ju Xiao Wu felt as if he had been granted amnesty and nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes! I'm a registered good citizen demon!"
In the end, Lin Xiyao didn't make him pay for the takeout and even gave him an extra twenty bucks as a tip. Ju Xiao Wu was overwhelmed with gratitude and pulled out a crumpled business card from his pocket.
"This is my workplace! Next time you order, you can request me for delivery!" He hesitated for a moment before whispering, "Um... could you please ask this esteemed gentleman to tone down his aura a bit? All the cats in the building are trembling..."
Qiu Mo Xuan raised an eyebrow. "Are you teaching me how to do my job?"
"Not at all, not at all!" Ju Xiao Wu fled in a panic, his tail tucked tightly between his legs.
After closing the door, Lin Xiyao looked at Qiu Mo Xuan and said, "You scared him."
"Weakness is instinctive," Qiu Mo Xuan replied as he walked back to the living room. "But he did get one thing right."
"What is it?"
"You need to learn to control your spiritual energy." Qiu Mo Xuan suddenly turned around and pointed his finger at her forehead. "Close your eyes."
Lin Xiyao felt a darkness envelop her, followed by a warm current flowing into her from her forehead.
To her surprise, she found that she could "see" countless floating light spots around her, some golden and some green.
"The gold ones are mine; the green ones are yours," Qiu Mo Xuan's voice was close. "Try to grab them."
Lin Xiyao reached out to touch the green light spots, but they scattered like startled fish.
"Not with your hands," Qiu Mo Xuan's breath brushed against her ear. "Use here."
His finger slid from her forehead down to her chest. Lin Xiyao's heart suddenly raced, and those green light spots began to pulse in rhythm with her heartbeat.
"Focus," Qiu Mo Xuan's voice was low. "Imagine they are your arms."
Lin Xiyao tried to visualize extending her hand. Remarkably, the green light spots began to converge toward her, with a few even sticking to her skin.
"Very good," Qiu Mo Xuan seemed pleased. "Now—"
His voice abruptly stopped. Lin Xiyao opened her eyes and saw that Qiu Mo Xuan was staring out the window, his expression serious.
"What's wrong?"
"Something is watching your house." Qiu Mo Xuan waved his hand, and the curtains automatically drew shut. "It's not the Cat Demon."
Lin Xiyao suddenly recalled something. "Zhou Yuanyuan... You said she has the scent of Yao Wu on her?"
Qiu Mo Xuan's golden pupils glowed in the darkness. "We'll go find her tomorrow."
"Can't we go now?"
"It's not safe at night." Qiu Mo Xuan walked toward the kitchen. "Let's eat first."
Lin Xiyao watched his back and suddenly noticed that Qiu Mo Xuan's gait seemed a bit off. She followed him and discovered that his right hand was trembling slightly.
"What's wrong with your hand?"
Qiu Mo Xuan hid his hand in his sleeve. "It's nothing."
"Let me see."
Lin Xiyao grabbed his wrist and forcibly pulled it out. There was a burn mark on Qiu Mo Xuan's palm, more severe than yesterday.
"This is... because of me?" She remembered those green light spots. "Did the spiritual energy I absorbed hurt you?"
Qiu Mo Xuan withdrew his hand. "It's just a minor injury."
"Don't move!" Lin Xiyao ran to get the first aid kit. "Sit down."
This time, Qiu Mo Xuan did not resist. As Lin Xiyao applied the medicine, she noticed that his skin temperature was much higher than normal.
"Why are you helping me?" she suddenly asked.
Qiu Mo Xuan looked at her as she focused on applying the medicine. "A contract."
"Just a contract?"
"What else could it be?"
Lin Xiyao fell silent. After finishing with the medicine, as she tidied up the bowls and chopsticks, she noticed that Qiu Mo Xuan was staring at her wrist.
The Dragon Mark there was particularly bright tonight.
As the night deepened, Lin Xiyao drifted in and out of sleep, sensing someone standing by her bed.
She forced her eyes open and saw Qiu Mo Xuan standing by the window, the moonlight casting his shadow on the wall.
That shadow... didn't quite resemble a human form.
Something outside rustled, like claws scraping against the glass. Qiu Mo Xuan raised his hand and made a downward motion, and the sound immediately ceased.
Lin Xiyao wanted to ask him what was happening, but drowsiness washed over her like a tide.
The last thing she saw was Qiu Mo Xuan turning his head, his golden eyes glowing in the darkness.
