The next day, Jiang Chen headed to the capital city. Although Su Xue had said that there was no need for him to pick her up at the airport, how could he possibly not go?
The Snowfall Courtyard had been vacant for nearly a year, and now it was finally ready to welcome its new owner.
In the evening, at the Capital International Airport, Su Qin stepped out with her daughter. The Wang family had sent someone to greet them, but Su Qin felt a bit disappointed when she saw that only the butler had come. They weren’t even being taken back to the Wang residence; instead, they were being sent to a hotel.
"Why is it just you, the butler? Where is everyone else?" Su Qin asked in a low voice.
The butler, Wang Bo, was over sixty years old and had served as the head butler for more than thirty years. He was well aware of Su Qin's situation. To be honest, despite being just a butler, Wang Bo had a high opinion of himself; after all, he was the chief steward of the Wang family and was used to flattery. He looked down on Su Qin and always had.
"The master and madam are very busy and don’t have time. The young master is in a meeting and also can’t come. If it weren’t for the Eldest Young Mistress asking me to come, I wouldn’t have bothered," Wang Bo said with a slight tilt of his head, speaking somewhat arrogantly.
Su Qin frowned immediately. If even a butler had such an attitude, what kind of life would her daughter have upon returning to the Wang family? This was not what the old man had promised her.
"Eldest Young Mistress? That woman hasn’t divorced Wang Jiansong yet?" Su Qin's expression darkened.
Wang Jiansong was Su Xue's father's name. One of the conditions Su Qin agreed to for allowing her daughter to return to the Wang family was that Wang Jiansong must divorce that woman. The old man had also promised this. Even just days ago, when Su Qin called Old Wang, he said they were divorced. If they hadn’t divorced, she wouldn’t have agreed to bring her daughter back because as long as that woman was around, her daughter would never inherit the Wang family's fortune.
"How could they possibly be divorced? The young master and Eldest Young Mistress are very affectionate," Wang Bo chuckled.
"Take me to see the old man; I have something to discuss with him," Su Qin seemed to sense something amiss.
"It's getting late today; you’ve both traveled a long way. Why not rest for the night? The old man will naturally meet you tomorrow," Wang Bo replied.
Su Qin was quite displeased but felt powerless; if things fell through with Old Wang tomorrow, she would just take her daughter back home.
"Su Xue!" Suddenly, a calm voice rang out.
Su Xue trembled all over and looked up to see Jiang Chen walking toward her.
"Jiang Chen! What are you doing here?" Su Xue was taken aback but quickly filled with joy.
"You’re back in the country; how could I not come pick you up? Besides, aren’t you eager to see the gift I brought you? Come on, let me show you," Jiang Chen smiled, his gaze solely on Su Xue while ignoring everyone else around them.
"Okay!" Su Xue almost instinctively replied and started to follow Jiang Chen. But after taking two steps, she realized her mother was right beside her!
Su Xue stomped her foot, her expression frozen as she turned around. Without needing to think, she could guess her mother's current expression.
Su Qin was already in a bad mood, and now seeing Jiang Chen made it even worse.
“Xue Er, you can't go anywhere tonight. Come back to the hotel with me,” Su Qin said in a low voice.
“Mom, I just want to hang out with Jiang Chen for a bit and then I'll come back to the hotel,” Su Xue pouted.
“No,” Su Qin rejected her without hesitation.
“Who is this young man?” Wang Bo, standing nearby, scrutinized Jiang Chen and couldn't help but ask. Wang Bo was a loyal lackey of the Wang family and knew very well that the old master wanted Su Xue back for a reason. Su Xue would soon be the young lady of the Wang family, a position of high status that not just anyone could associate with.
“He's my friend,” Su Xue explained.
“Miss, from now on, your status is no longer the same. Making friends needs to be approved by the old master and the young master. Ordinary people do not qualify to be your friends. Considering that you have lived abroad since childhood and have no friends in Beijing, the old master has decided to hold a recognition banquet for you tomorrow night. Many prominent figures from Beijing will be invited, including many young masters and ladies your age, so you can meet them,” Wang Bo said.
Although he didn’t name anyone directly, his meaning was clear: Su Xue should not associate with Jiang Chen because he was unworthy.
“Why do I need their approval to make friends?” Although Su Xue was a naive person, this matter touched on her principles, prompting her to resist.
“Because you are a member of the Wang family; they are your elders. As a junior, you must seek their consent in your actions. Of course, as long as your friends are of equal standing with our family, no one will object,” Wang Bo replied.
For some reason, upon hearing Wang Bo's words, Su Qin couldn't help but clench her fists. Was he speaking to her? No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't change the fact of her humble origins, making her sensitive to issues of status and identity.
