I replied softly, "Are you going to pick her up?"
It was just a casual question, but Zhou Wei seemed to misunderstand and quickly said, "If you don't want me to go, I won't."
I shook my head. "If you're going to pick someone up, you can't go empty-handed. How about this? I'll help you choose a gift, just as a little meeting present for her."
Zhou Wei suddenly lunged at me, hugging me tightly and whispering in my ear, "Yueyue, how do you understand me so well? I really love you."
I smiled, but inside I felt a wave of sarcasm.
Having just started my job not long ago, I was always busy, often working late into the night with Sun Xin.
There were a few times when Sun Xin drove me home and a few times when Zhou Wei came to pick me up.
I calculated the time carefully and took a day off on the twenty-sixth to go to the mall to buy a gift for Yu Lan.
Sun Xin went with me, thinking I was buying something for myself. He even offered to pay for it as a welcome gift.
I declined and told him it was a gift for my boyfriend's high school classmate.
Sun Xin's expression turned a bit complicated after hearing that; he finally said, "You're quite the dedicated girlfriend, helping your boyfriend choose gifts for other girls."
I chuckled and shook my head while paying, "You just don't understand."
After shopping, Sun Xin and I left the mall.
In the car, he suddenly asked me, "Do you really like your boyfriend?"
I raised an eyebrow but didn't answer.
For the past couple of days, I had been working late and had not seen Zhou Wei for two days.
On the evening of the twenty-eighth, while I was busy working late again, I suddenly remembered that I hadn't given Zhou Wei the gift yet.
I called Zhou Wei, but he didn't answer.
Feeling a bit anxious, I decided to call Chen Zhixuan instead.
Chen Zhixuan was straightforward; he sent me the location and informed me that it was a gathering from Zhou Wei's group to welcome Yu Lan, and all his friends would be there.
I thanked him, grabbed my watch, and said goodbye to Sun Xin before leaving.
He was supposed to give it to me, but I declined. Before leaving, he said to me, "Take care of yourself."
When Chen Zhixuan sent me the box number, I pushed the door open and all eyes turned to me. Inside the room were Zhou Wei's college classmates, along with some others I didn't recognize, likely his high school friends.
I spotted Zhou Wei right away, along with a girl in a white dress sitting next to him. Her eyes resembled mine and were fixed on me at that moment.
Zhou Wei seemed taken aback when he saw me; he immediately stood up from the sofa, a mix of surprise and impatience on his face. "What are you doing here?" he asked.
I walked over with a smile, handed him the gift bag, and looked calmly at Yu Lan. "This is a gift for his desk mate. I've been busy these past few days and forgot to give it to you."
Zhou Wei accepted the gift somewhat awkwardly, while Yu Lan stood up and took it directly from his hands, smiling as she said to me, "Zhou Wei and I are really close; you don’t need to be so formal. It feels a bit distant."
I chuckled lightly. "He is who he is, and I am who I am. It's my first time meeting his high school desk mate, so it's better to be polite."
The atmosphere began to grow a bit awkward when a guy walked over and pointed at me, saying to everyone, "This is Zhou Wei's girlfriend; she's one of us, so don't be shy."
With that one sentence from Lin Yuan, the guys in the room started joking around again. Lin Yuan laughed and responded one by one while stealing a glance at me, his expression slightly tense.
I moved to the corner and gently patted his shoulder. "I don't know anyone here; my presence might be in the way. I'm going to head out now. If you drink too much, remember to call me; I still have to go back to work."
Lin Yuan opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something but then held back.
I smiled and added, "Have fun; it's rare for everyone to get together. Just remember to call me; I'll always be here."
After saying that, I didn’t look back at him. I greeted the people in the room and turned to leave.
