Jiang Fan moved out of the villa.
I didn't ask Jia Jia to avoid him.
Holding my hand, Jia Jia asked,
“Is Daddy going on a business trip?”
I shook my head.
“Daddy won’t live here anymore, but you can call him when you miss him, and he will make time to play with you.”
Jia Jia nodded obediently.
Jiang Fan hugged Jia Jia, looking reluctant to let go.
Later, I asked Aunt Chen to take Jia Jia inside.
I knew he had something to say to me.
He lit a cigarette, looking dejected.
“Do we really have to come to this? Can’t we start over?”
I sighed.
“How can we restart? Jia Jia is already five years old; you missed her first steps, her first words. Do you remember when she first called you Daddy? Once it’s missed, it’s missed; there’s no way to relive it.”
Jiang Fan smiled bitterly, his face full of sarcasm.
“It’s always about Jia Jia; you can only see her. But Ma Hui, before I was Jia Jia’s father, I was your husband.”
That was true.
“But I don’t love you anymore; I don’t expect you to change anything. I just hope you can be a good father, though I don’t really expect that either. It’s normal for adults to have their hopes dashed.”
Jiang Fan's father was furious.
He took back Yang Fang's shop and kicked her out of the villa, even reclaiming her car.
The actions were so swift that Yang Fang didn’t have time to react.
Not only that, but he also disciplined Jiang Fan physically.
That day, Jia Jia was there too.
When her grandfather hit him with a stick, Jia Jia rushed over, crying out,
“Grandpa, don’t hit Daddy! Daddy is hurt!”
The little girl cried until her eyes were swollen, and I hugged her tightly, feeling a pang of heartache.
Outside the hospital room, Jiang Fan hunched over, his hands still trembling. He looked at me, helplessly saying, "I didn't expect Jia Jia to rush over. It's all my fault."
Because of the injury to Jia Jia, the Lu Family was thrown into chaos. No one intended for this to happen, and I couldn't blame anyone. Yet, I still felt sad inside.
"Jiang Fan, Jia Jia loves you very much."
"Yes, I..."
"But you don't love her."
"I do not!"
Jiang Fan quickly denied it, his face turning pale.
"Jia Jia is timid and afraid of pain; she cries every time she goes to the doctor. That's why you don't like accompanying her to the hospital. Once during a blood test, the nurse held her down and asked, 'Where's the child's father?' You were outside smoking and refused to answer my call. But you stayed with Yang Fang all night when she was sick. Do you know how many nights I spent with Jia Jia when she was ill?"
I wiped away my tears, my expression blank.
"It's okay; Jia Jia is only five. You can make it up to her. I won't tell her that you don't love her; you can still be a good father. But there’s one thing: her stepmother can be anyone except Yang Fang."
Jiang Fan froze for a moment and hurriedly explained, "It's impossible for me and Yang Fang!"
I interrupted him, "I know you're still in contact with her. I'm just telling you that if you're with her, I will make sure Jia Jia doesn't recognize you as her father."
Jiang Fan suddenly grabbed my hand, "Hui Hui, you still care about this, right?" His eyes were filled with hope.
I was taken aback for a moment, then I smiled.
"I didn't investigate you or her. She added me on WeChat and told me herself.
By the way, could you ask her to stop bothering me? I don't care about you two."
Yang Fang said that Jiang Fan gave her five hundred thousand and even helped her find a job.
She claimed, "He has always cared for me. Now that you two are divorced, I will take good care of him."
But she miscalculated.
The kind of person a man wants to save is someone pure and good-hearted, not someone with ulterior motives.
Jiang Fan retrieved the five hundred thousand and made her sign an IOU.
He said, "I wasn't being nice to her; I just wanted to help someone in need. Hui Hui, I was wrong."
He added, "I really shouldn't have let you suffer because of Yang Fang!"
I chuckled lightly, "Actually, it's not that bad!"
"What do you mean?"
"Yang Fang's appearance, rather than making me sad, is more about making me embarrassed.
You show so much concern for another woman while still married; that's quite a blow to your pride,
like being slapped in public—it's humiliating!"
My words seemed to strike a nerve with Jiang Fan.
He stared at me for a long time.
Finally, he softly said, "It seems you really don't love me anymore!"
The sadness on his face was impossible to hide.
He asked, "When did you stop loving me?"
I shook my head, "I can't remember clearly!"
"Then when did you start seriously thinking about divorce?"
I thought for a moment, "Probably when I last brought up the divorce!"
